How is Ford helping Sharrow make its propellers faster?
Sharrow Engineering announced on April 9, 2026, that it was scaling production of its Sharrow Propeller with Ford Motor Company’s Advanced Industrial Technology & Platforms (ATP) team. The collaboration adapted Sharrow’s precision-engineered designs to a 3D-printed sand-casting process. Ford helped develop and refine the mold-manufacturing process and worked with regional foundry partners, combining Ford’s manufacturing-process expertise with the foundries’ metallurgical and pouring experience. Sharrow’s announcement and Ford’s account describe the teams’ work as a nine-month effort to adapt and validate the process for higher-volume production.
Michigan Central’s innovation ecosystem facilitated the introduction between Sharrow and Ford. The collaboration addresses a manufacturing bottleneck Sharrow’s founder and CEO, Greg Sharrow, described this way: “Since we introduced the Sharrow Propeller, the market response has been extraordinary, but scaling production has been our biggest challenge, particularly getting high-quality castings fast enough to meet demand.”
Ford’s additive manufacturing operations supervisor, Dan Michalski, said: “Ford has been at the leading edge of 3D sand-casting for more than 20 years, and it’s rewarding to use that expertise to help another Michigan company scale so quickly.” Michigan Central Acting CEO Carolina Pluszczynski said: “Michigan Central was built to bring together the people, infrastructure, and expertise needed to help companies move from breakthrough ideas to real-world scale.”

What is a Sharrow propeller?
The Sharrow Propeller is a boat propeller with loop-shaped blade tips, rather than the open ends found on conventional propeller blades. Sharrow Marine describes the product on its company website. The 2026 announcement concerns how the propellers are manufactured; it does not report a new design or provide comparative performance-test results.
How long does it take to make a Sharrow propeller now?
Sharrow reports that a process using traditional investment casting could take as much as 130 days, while its adapted 3D-printed sand-casting approach takes approximately two weeks. That is the company’s stated manufacturing-cycle comparison. The announcement does not provide independent measurements, process yields, defect rates, or enough detail to establish whether the figures apply to every Sharrow model or every production run.

A shorter manufacturing cycle does not establish that customer orders arrive in two weeks. The announcements do not say that delivery schedules have changed, disclose current stock, or report actual production volume.

In July 2025, Sharrow separately announced a 60,000-square-foot facility in Harper Woods and said the expansion enabled capacity of up to 2,000 units per month. Those are company-reported facility and capacity figures, not evidence that it produced or shipped that quantity. The facility announcement is available from Sharrow Marine.

Together, the facility and casting collaboration describe two parts of a scale-up: added manufacturing capacity and a revised process intended to get castings through production faster. The announcements do not provide a cost comparison, realized monthly output, casting yields, or defect rates, so they do not establish how much the change has increased deliveries or reduced costs.
