How Fleet Managers Can Monitor Electric-Truck Routes and Energy Use

A practical guide to combining electric-truck telematics, route-energy estimates and charging data so dispatchers can assign work and monitor trips with better context.

Fleet managers can monitor electric-truck routes by combining connected-vehicle location and trip history with live battery state of charge (SoC), energy consumed or added in kilowatt-hours (kWh), charging activity, and route-specific energy estimates. To decide whether a truck can finish a route, assess the planned work and charging opportunities against the vehicle’s estimated energy use and the fleet’s operating reserve—not just its advertised or dashboard range.

The practical cycle is to confirm the truck and data connection, plan with the actual route and load, review predicted energy and charging needs, dispatch and monitor the trip, then compare recorded results with the plan. Telematics and planning tools can make that process visible, but published service descriptions do not establish a universal prediction accuracy or guarantee that every route will be feasible in changing conditions.

What to monitor on an electric-truck route

Location alone shows where a vehicle is, not whether it can complete its assignment. A useful fleet view combines trip progress with energy, charging, and the operating conditions that influence consumption. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program identifies vehicle location, route history, EV state of charge, and energy consumption as telematics uses for fleet management. Commercial services add varying combinations of route simulation, charging visibility, vehicle-health signals, and dispatch integration.

Monitoring layer Useful data What it helps a dispatcher decide
Position and trip Current location, route history, stops, geofence arrivals and departures, and speed or ETA where available Whether a truck is following its assignment, when it is likely to reach a stop, and how actual trips compare with planned ones.
Battery and energy Live SoC, kWh consumed or added, predicted energy by route or leg, and estimated battery state at stops or at tour end Whether the truck has an energy path through the assignment and where consumption differs from expectations.
Charging Connected, charging, completed, or interrupted status; scheduled charging; session history; and planned en-route stops Whether a truck is becoming ready for dispatch and whether charging activity is affecting the schedule.
Work context Truck configuration, payload, route terrain or topology, weather or temperature, auxiliary equipment, traffic, and loading or unloading details where supported Why two trips on a similar route may use different amounts of energy.
Health and integration Battery or fault signals, vehicle-data feeds, APIs, and links to a transport management system (TMS) or dispatch system Whether an operational issue needs attention and whether route information reaches the people assigning work.

Not every system supplies every field, and update frequency or availability can vary by truck, service, market, and contract. Confirm what is actually delivered for the fleet rather than assuming a feature listed for one vehicle or region is universal.

How to tell whether a truck has enough range

Range feasibility is a route-and-work decision. Start with the route the truck will actually drive, then account for its configuration, payload, expected conditions, energy-consuming equipment, and planned stops. Review the tool’s estimated energy use by route or leg and the projected battery state at important points. If the operation plans a charging stop, include its location and expected role in the trip plan rather than treating it as an informal fallback.

Use a route-specific estimate, not a nominal range figure

A published vehicle range or a single range figure cannot describe every assignment. Service descriptions identify inputs such as vehicle specifications, payload, terrain, temperature or weather, auxiliary loads, traffic, loading and unloading, and historical driving behavior. Which factors are modeled depends on the tool. For example, Volvo’s Range and Route service describes consideration of truck specifications, payload, weather, terrain, and energy-consuming equipment; Bosch describes vehicle model, curb weight, temperature, loading and unloading information, and road or topology data. Treat these as examples of model inputs, not proof that every platform uses the same data or produces equally reliable estimates.

Compare predicted demand with available energy and the fleet’s reserve

Check the truck’s current SoC and the platform’s estimated battery state along the route, including at the final destination and any charging stop. Compare the planned energy demand with the energy available to the vehicle, leaving the reserve your operation requires for delays or changed conditions. No single reserve percentage or universal acceptance threshold is established by the service descriptions discussed here; fleets need to set decision rules suited to their vehicles, routes, charging access, and operating needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the estimate is close to the fleet’s limit, do not treat a green status or a single predicted figure as a guarantee. Recheck the route and load information, consider a suitable charging stop or a different truck assignment, and ensure dispatch has a contingency if conditions change. A route planner can support the decision, but it cannot remove uncertainty from real-world operation.

A practical route-and-energy monitoring workflow

  1. Confirm coverage. Verify that the truck is connected and that the platform receives the signals dispatch needs: location, route history, SoC, and energy data at minimum. Check supported makes, models, configurations, and data access. The DOE guide describes telematics and fleet-system integration; MAN describes vehicle-data APIs. A Volvo Group announcement in March 2022 described a factory gateway supplying VNR Electric information to MyGeotab, a specific integration example rather than evidence of universal compatibility.
  2. Prepare the assignment with real work details. Enter or import the route and provide payload or loading information, relevant equipment loads, and duty-cycle details when the tool supports them. Check stops and route topology, not just distance. An incomplete or outdated route or load can undermine the usefulness of an otherwise sophisticated estimate.
  3. Review energy by route or leg. Look at predicted consumption and estimated battery state at key stops and at the end of the tour. If the system supports alternate routes or charging scenarios, use them to evaluate practical options. Bosch describes route- and leg-level consumption estimates and battery-state estimates; Mack describes evaluating charging scenarios; MAN describes interim charging as part of route planning.
  4. Plan charging as part of the trip. Confirm that a planned stop fits the route and schedule, and review charging state or charger information where available. Depending on the platform, useful details may include charger occupancy or capacity, charging-session history, or whether charging has been interrupted. Do not assume that a route planner’s identified charger is available to the truck at the required time; verify what the particular service’s charger data represents.
  5. Send the route and monitor progress. Use route transfer to the driver or dispatch workflow where supported. During the trip, follow location, SoC, and charging events, and respond to low-charge or interrupted-charge notifications if configured. Compare the vehicle’s progress with the plan rather than relying on an initial range estimate alone.
  6. Review actuals after the tour. Compare route history with recorded energy consumption and charging sessions. Look for repeatable differences by route, load, conditions, or vehicle, then update assignments or planning assumptions. DOE describes monitoring kWh and historical utilization; Volvo and MAN describe reporting or analysis features in their services.

Why energy use changes between trips

The same truck can use different amounts of energy on routes that look similar on a map. Distance is only one part of the work: the vehicle configuration and payload matter, and terrain, temperature, weather, traffic, auxiliary equipment, loading and unloading, and driving behavior can influence demand. The specific factors available to a prediction model vary, so a dispatcher should check which inputs are included rather than interpreting a route estimate as a complete account of every condition.

When actual use differs from the estimate, compare like with like. Review whether the route, payload, stops, equipment use, or conditions changed; check whether the data feed covered the trip; and look for an interruption or unplanned detour in route and charging history. One trip can reveal a data or planning issue, but a pattern across comparable tours is more useful for changing assignments or assumptions. The cited agency and vendor descriptions explain capabilities, not a universal measured reduction in energy use or a cross-platform prediction error bound.

Choosing a monitoring and planning setup

There are several implementation patterns: a truck maker’s connected services, a telematics platform receiving vehicle data, or a cloud prediction service integrated with a TMS. The right fit depends on the fleet’s trucks and dispatch process, not on a feature list alone. Compare the following before making a selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Truck coverage: Confirm supported makes, models, configurations, gateways, and countries. Ask whether the data connection is already available on the vehicles or requires a particular integration.
  • Prediction inputs and outputs: Check whether the tool accounts for payload, route terrain, temperature or weather, vehicle configuration, auxiliary equipment, traffic, or duty cycle. Ask whether it shows estimated consumption and battery state by route or leg.
  • Dispatch linkage: Verify route planning, route transfer, charging-stop planning, TMS integration, and API access. A useful estimate has limited operational value if dispatch cannot put it into the assignment workflow.
  • Live and historical visibility: Check which SoC alerts, charging states, energy reports, and historical session records are available, and how the data can be reviewed after a trip.
  • Charging support: Distinguish depot charging management from public-charger discovery, charger occupancy or capacity data, and scenario planning for opportunity charging. These are different capabilities.
  • Health and uptime: Determine whether the service provides battery monitoring, vehicle fault information, or a route to service support, and whether those signals are included for the fleet’s models.
  • Availability and terms: Ask which features are offered in the fleet’s market and under its service agreement. A product page describing a feature does not establish that it is enabled for every customer or vehicle.

Official agency guidance and vendor materials establish that these capabilities are offered or described, but they do not provide an independent head-to-head comparison. Ask prospective providers to demonstrate the fleet’s own truck, route, load, charging plan, and dispatch workflow. Check both the information shown and what happens when a route changes or a charging session is interrupted.

Examples of services and the capabilities they describe

The following are examples, not a ranking or endorsement. Feature availability can depend on vehicle model, service, market, and contract.

Service Capabilities described by its provider Qualification
Volvo Connect Positioning and route history, Range and Route simulation, Charging Management, battery-pack monitoring, and Energy and Environment reporting. Volvo says Range and Route considers truck specifications, payload, weather, terrain, and energy-consuming equipment. Availability is market- and service-dependent.
MAN DigitalServices / RIO Geo for near-real-time position and geofences; SmartRoute planning for MAN eTGX and eTGS using remaining range, charging capacity, traffic, charger occupancy or capacity, and interim charging; eManager charging, preconditioning, and consumption analysis; DataPackages APIs for vehicle data. Check model and regional availability.
Mack E-Mobility services Route recording, range planning, energy-consumption modeling, charging-scenario evaluation, and fleet-specific infrastructure planning. Mack describes factoring in route, payload, terrain, temperature, and driving behavior.
Bosch Energy Consumption Prediction A cloud service for TMS route-planning integration that returns predicted consumption by route or leg and battery-state estimates, with charging-stop planning. Bosch describes a model-based, multi-vehicle approach; that is vendor positioning, not independent proof of comparative accuracy.
MyGeotab for Volvo VNR Electric A March 2022 Volvo Group announcement described location, departure and arrival notifications, SoC alerts, charging status, and energy reports through cloud integration. These are details from that dated announcement; verify current availability rather than assuming the announced configuration remains available.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Government guidance and service descriptions support a practical monitoring approach: combine position and trip history with SoC, kWh data, charging visibility, and context for route-energy estimates. They do not establish that telematics alone will reduce energy use, that one platform is best, or that a prediction guarantees a feasible trip. No independently validated universal accuracy figure or comparable performance benchmark is established for the services discussed here.

Volvo Trucks’ March 2022 announcement quoted Andy Brown, its product marketing manager for Volvo Trucks North America, describing the learning curve for fleet managers and drivers as they adapt to electric-truck range and fueling time. That statement reflects the company’s perspective in that announcement; it is not a quantitative measure of monitoring effectiveness.
