How fast is a Nissan GT-R?
For the R35 GT-R, the most defensible headline figures are a manufacturer-listed 196 mph top speed in Nissan’s UK technical data and a 3.1-second 0–60 mph run in Edmunds’ independent test of a 2024 GT-R.
Those figures mean different things. The 196-mph number is manufacturer technical data for the UK-market GT-R grades specified in that document; it is not a blanket guarantee for every year, trim, market, tire fitment, or condition of R35 GT-R. The 3.1-second figure is a measured result from one independently tested 2024 vehicle, not a factory promise.

Older magazine tests provide useful context but should not be substituted for the 2024 result. Car and Driver tested a 565-hp 2018 GT-R Track Edition at 2.9 seconds to 60 mph and 11.1 seconds at 126 mph in the quarter-mile. Differences in trim, tires, launch procedure, weather, surface, and vehicle condition can all move the result.
The engine: Nissan’s 3.8-liter VR38 twin-turbo V6
Every final U.S.-market GT-R uses Nissan’s 3.8-liter DOHC, 24-valve, twin-turbocharged VR38 V6. Each cylinder bank has its own turbocharger, intercooler, and catalyst. Nissan also highlights the engine’s plasma-sprayed cylinder bores, a design intended to reduce friction and weight compared with conventional iron liners.
The output difference is trim-specific:
- Premium and T-spec: 565 hp and 467 lb-ft.
- NISMO: 600 hp and 481 lb-ft.
Horsepower describes how quickly the engine can continue doing work as speed rises; torque is twisting force. Both matter, but neither number alone determines a 0–60 time. Launch grip, gearing, shift speed, tire condition, pavement, temperature, and the test method matter just as much when a high-performance car leaves the line.

Why the GT-R launches so hard
The R35’s drivetrain is as important as its engine output. Nissan places the transmission and transfer case in an independent rear transaxle, helping concentrate mass toward the middle of the car. The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission uses separate odd- and even-gear clutches, allowing the next gear to be prepared before the shift.
Its ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system is variable rather than a fixed 50/50 arrangement. Nissan says it can send up to 50% of torque to the front wheels when needed, or direct nearly all available torque rearward. That combination of traction, rapid shifts, and turbocharged power is the reason the GT-R is capable of such forceful, repeatable acceleration on an appropriate test surface.
Premium vs. T-spec vs. NISMO
The T-spec is not the final U.S. GT-R’s horsepower upgrade. It retains the same 565-hp engine rating as the Premium, while adding equipment including carbon-ceramic brakes and 20-inch gold-painted RAYS forged-alloy wheels.

The NISMO is the 600-hp version. Beyond its higher-output engine calibration, it adds carbon-ceramic brakes, NISMO-tuned suspension, model-specific aerodynamic bodywork, and NISMO-specific wheels and tires. These hardware differences are why it should not be treated as merely a cosmetic package.
Why published GT-R figures sometimes conflict
GT-R performance numbers are frequently mixed across markets and model years. Keep these distinctions in view:

- U.S. power ratings: Nissan rated the 2024 Premium and T-spec at 565 hp and the NISMO at 600 hp.
- UK top-speed data: Nissan’s UK document lists 196 mph and uses PS ratings, including 570 PS for standard grades. PS and hp are not identical units.
- Independent acceleration tests: A test result describes the tested car and conditions, not every GT-R ever built.
That is also why “the Nissan GTR has 600 horsepower” is incomplete. The final U.S. NISMO has 600 hp; Premium and T-spec versions have 565 hp.

The R35 GT-R is discontinued
This article concerns the modern R35 GT-R, not the earlier Skyline GT-R generations. Nissan identifies the R35 model run as December 2007 through August 2025, and the final car left Nissan’s Tochigi production line in August 2025. Nissan’s Japanese support information says GT-R production has ended, while repair and maintenance support will continue for the time being.
End of production does not establish a successor, a launch date, or future values. It simply means the R35 is no longer a current-production Nissan sports car.

For an R35 owner, a fitted Nissan GT-R R35 car cover is a sensible storage accessory, not a performance part. Match a cover to the exact model year, trim, aero package, mirror pockets, and whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. Nissan has also listed GT-R floor mats, wheel locks, road kits, and tool kits as accessories; none adds horsepower or raises top speed.
