BYD later reported a faster 496.22 km/h run by the U9 Xtreme, so the Track Edition figure is a milestone in the record’s chronology—not the latest BYD claim.
What speed did the U9 Track Edition record?
BYD reported that the U9 Track Edition reached 472.41 km/h (293.54 mph) during a run at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 8 August 2025. The manufacturer described it as a new global EV top-speed record. BYD’s announcement is the source for the speed, date and record claim; it does not provide an independent record-governing body’s verification methodology.
Marc Basseng drove the car. In BYD’s announcement, the professional driver said: “Last year, I thought I’d peaked. I never expected to break my own record so soon — but here we are, at the same track, with new technologies that have made it possible.”
How does the later U9 Xtreme result change the record story?
On 14 September 2025, BYD reported that the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h, surpassing the Track Edition’s August figure. BYD characterized the later run as a production-car top-speed record. The distinction matters: 472.41 km/h is the Track Edition’s announced EV record from August, while 496.22 km/h is BYD’s later U9 Xtreme claim.

BYD says the U9 Xtreme was originally known as the U9 Track/Special Edition and was confirmed in production guise under the U9 Xtreme name. It announced a limited production run of no more than 30 units. The later Xtreme result should not be treated as if it were the Track Edition’s August run or configuration.
What made the Track Edition different?
BYD said the Track Edition built on the U9’s e⁴ Platform and DiSus-X architecture, adding a mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage platform with thermal management optimized for extreme conditions. The company listed four motors rated at 555 kW each, combined system output exceeding 3,000 PS, and a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per tonne.

- Chassis and aerodynamics: The announcement cited DiSus-X suspension adjustments, the U9’s aerodynamic design and an optional carbon-fiber front splitter that BYD said was already in mass production.
- Tires: BYD said it worked with Giti Tire on a track-focused semi-slick tire with a bespoke tread and compound. A wheel-rim interface treatment was intended to reduce slippage under hard acceleration or braking. This describes the record car’s purpose-developed hardware, not a verified consumer-road tire offering.
These technical details and performance figures are manufacturer-reported specifications. BYD’s later U9 Xtreme announcement separately lists 1200V electrics, four motors operating at up to 30,000 rpm, more than 3,000 PS, track-level semi-slick tires and revised DiSus-X tuning; those later specifications should not automatically be assigned to the earlier Track Edition setup.
