BYD says its Super e-Platform can add 400 km of range in five minutes, using peak charging power of 1 megawatt (1,000 kW). The company announced the platform on March 17, 2025, alongside two China-market models. Those figures are BYD’s claims—not results from an independent vehicle test—and depend on a compatible vehicle and charging infrastructure.
What did BYD announce?
BYD announced the Super e-Platform on March 17, 2025, describing it as an integrated vehicle-and-charging development. The platform combines flash-charging batteries, a 30,000-rpm motor and new silicon-carbide power chips. BYD named the Han L and Tang L as the first vehicles to use it and said pre-sales had opened in China at launch. BYD’s launch announcement
BYD also presented the launch as an effort to make charging feel more like refueling. Wang Chuanfu, BYD Group chairman and president, said the company’s goal was “to make EV charging as fast as refuelling a gasoline car.” That is a statement of the company’s aim, not evidence that the experience is already available to drivers broadly.
How fast does BYD say the system can charge?
BYD’s headline claim is a peak charging power of 1 MW, or 1,000 kW. The company says that peak rate can add range at up to two kilometres per second, yielding 400 km in five minutes. The 400 km figure is claimed range added, not a measured distance driven after charging; the announcement does not specify an independent test procedure or range-estimation method.

In related official material, BYD describes a 1,000-volt architecture, 1,000-amp charging current and a 10C charging rate. It separately says its self-developed charging stations are rated up to 1,360 kW. Can an EV really add 400 km in five minutes?
It is physically possible for a very high-power charging system to transfer substantial energy quickly, but BYD’s announcement alone does not establish that a driver will routinely gain 400 km in five minutes. Peak power is not necessarily maintained throughout a charging session, and the actual time and range added can depend on the vehicle, battery state and operating conditions. The company announcement does not provide independent measurements or explain how the range figure was calculated.

To assess any ultra-fast-charging claim, distinguish the peak power from average power over the session, and ask how “range added” was estimated. The vehicle and battery must also be compatible with the charger, and an appropriately powerful station must be available. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable independent test across vehicles.

The announcement establishes BYD’s claim and the initial China launch context; it does not establish current availability in other countries, broad deployment of the associated stations, or real-world performance across battery states and temperatures. Drivers should therefore treat the five-minute figure as a company-stated capability for the announced system, not a general expectation for EV charging.

EE Times described the launch as part of intensifying competition in EV charging and discussed other automakers’ and battery makers’ developments. Those comparisons are useful as market context, but they are not a normalized head-to-head test: peak power, range added, vehicle efficiency, test conditions and charger availability measure different things.
