How F1 Teams Use Tyre Strategy to Gain Positions During a Race

F1 tyre strategy is a race-long calculation: teams weigh fresh-tyre pace against pit-lane loss, warm-up, traffic, overtaking and changing conditions. Here is how undercuts, overcuts and long stints turn those variables into positions.

Formula 1 teams gain places with tyre strategy by turning pit-lane time into a larger advantage on track. They predict how quickly each compound will run, how long it will last, whether a new tyre will warm up immediately, where a car will rejoin and how easily it can overtake. A stop is worthwhile only when the expected pace and tyre-life gain outweigh the time lost in the pits and any traffic after the stop.

The main choices are the undercut (stopping before a rival), the overcut (staying out after a rival stops), and going long to create a late-race tyre advantage. None is automatically fastest. Circuit layout, degradation, weather, compound allocation, safety-car timing and the ability to pass can reverse the apparent order during a race.

Why a pit stop can gain or lose positions

A pit stop combines two opposing effects. The car loses time while entering the pit lane, slowing to the speed limit, stopping for service and accelerating back onto the circuit. It then gains performance from a newer or more suitable tyre. Engineers compare those effects over the laps that remain in the stint.

The calculation is circuit-specific. A track with a long pit lane and difficult overtaking makes a stop expensive: a driver may rejoin behind slower cars and be unable to use the tyre advantage. A short pit lane or an easy passing zone reduces that risk. Teams also include the time required for the new tyre to reach its operating window. A theoretically faster compound can be a poor choice if it is slow for several laps after the stop.

Traffic is part of the arithmetic, not an afterthought. Strategists estimate the cars a driver will meet on pit exit, the time needed to pass them and whether a rival will stop into the same gap. A clean-air lap on an old tyre can sometimes be more valuable than a faster tyre trapped behind another car.

The undercut: stopping first to attack a rival

How it works

In an undercut, a driver pits before a nearby rival. The fresh tyre should allow a faster out-lap and faster subsequent laps while the rival remains on an older set. When the rival eventually stops, the first car may have built enough of a time advantage to emerge ahead.

Teams compare the rival’s expected lap time on worn tyres with the stopping car’s projected pace on new ones. The gain must exceed the pit-lane loss, the warm-up penalty and any time spent in traffic. The rival’s in-lap matters too: if that driver can produce a very fast final lap before stopping, the undercut becomes harder.

When an undercut is attractive

  • The current tyre is degrading quickly and losing several tenths per lap.
  • The replacement compound delivers an immediate or predictable pace increase.
  • The driver can rejoin in clear air rather than behind a queue.
  • The circuit offers a useful out-lap and a realistic chance to pass if traffic appears.
  • A rival is close enough that a few fast laps can cover the pit-stop deficit.

Why it can fail

A cold tyre may be too slow for the first sector, allowing the rival to keep track position. The stopping car can also rejoin behind a slower competitor, losing the very laps needed to make the tactic work. If degradation is lower than expected, the rival’s older tyre remains competitive and the undercut never repays its cost. A Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car immediately after the rival stops can erase the time comparison as well.

The overcut: staying out after a rival pits

How it works

Jolyon Palmer describes the overcut as waiting for a rival to pit and then stopping a lap or more later. The driver on the original tyre uses clear track to set useful laps while the rival warms the new set or works through traffic. After the delayed stop, the overcutting car may rejoin ahead.

Conditions that favour it

  • The current tyre still has consistent pace and low degradation.
  • New tyres need several laps to warm, especially in cool conditions.
  • The driver can run in clean air while the rival rejoins behind traffic.
  • The circuit makes overtaking difficult, so track position is worth more than an immediate tyre advantage.
  • A neutralisation is possible and could reduce the cost of the later stop.

Higher-degradation races generally make an overcut less common because staying out costs too much lap time. In cooler, lower-degradation circumstances, however, the clean-air laps can outweigh the benefit of the rival’s newer rubber. The team must also stop before the original tyre falls off a performance cliff.

Going long and trading track position for late-race pace

Going long means extending a stint rather than responding immediately to a rival’s stop. The team accepts that the driver may lose places temporarily, then fits a fresher tyre for the closing laps. This can be effective when the remaining distance is long enough to exploit the tyre advantage and the driver can pass cars after the stop.

The risk is being trapped behind traffic or running out of laps. If overtaking is difficult, a driver may finish behind cars that stopped earlier even while having faster tyres. Engineers therefore model both the tyre delta and the number of passing opportunities, not just the projected lap time.

What the pit wall compares before choosing a plan

Factor Question engineers ask Strategic effect
Tyre pace and life How much faster is the alternative compound, and for how many laps? A large, durable advantage supports an early stop; a small or short-lived gain may not repay the pit loss.
Pit-lane time How much time does a normal stop cost at this circuit? A high loss demands a larger tyre or track-position benefit.
Warm-up Will the new tyre work immediately or need several laps? Slow warm-up can favour an overcut; rapid warm-up can make an undercut powerful.
Traffic Where will the car rejoin, and how quickly can it clear slower cars? Clean air increases the value of stopping; a queue can eliminate it.
Overtaking Can the driver pass after rejoining behind a rival? Limited passing increases the value of track position and makes an overcut or long stint more attractive.
Weather and track state Are rain, temperature or grip changing the tyre balance? Forecasts can become obsolete within a few laps.
Neutralisation Could a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car reduce the stop’s time cost? Teams may delay a stop or pit immediately when the effective loss is reduced.

How teams build and update a race strategy

  1. Start with the tyre allocation. Engineers list the new and used sets available to each driver, the compounds selected for the event and the mandatory-use requirements that apply to the race.
  2. Estimate degradation. Practice and qualifying data show how lap time changes with fuel load, track temperature and tyre age. The team creates a pace curve for each compound rather than treating “soft” or “hard” as a fixed performance level.
  3. Calculate the pit-stop window. Simulations include pit-lane loss, the out-lap, warm-up and likely traffic. The result is a range of laps in which stopping is faster than continuing.
  4. Map rivals and gaps. Timing data identifies which cars could undercut, which gaps are safe for a rejoin and whether a rival’s in-lap or out-lap is likely to be compromised.
  5. Choose a primary and alternative plan. A one-stop, two-stop or longer strategy is paired with triggers such as rising degradation, a weather change or a safety-car period.
  6. Monitor the live race. Drivers report grip and tyre condition while sensors and timing data measure actual degradation. The pit wall updates the model when the track evolves or a rival changes course.
  7. Execute at the right lap. The final call balances the current gap, tyre performance, traffic and neutralisation risk. A mathematically optimal stop is rejected if the driver would rejoin in an unusable place.

Compound choice is specific to each Grand Prix

Tyre compounds are not universally fast or slow. The selection reflects circuit severity, corner loads, surface roughness, expected temperatures and the likely degradation pattern. For the 2026 British Grand Prix, Formula 1 reported C1, C2 and C3 as the hard, medium and soft options. Pirelli linked that selection to the circuit’s severity and degradation characteristics.

Pirelli’s pre-race British Grand Prix forecast called a one-stop using C2 followed by the hard tyre the fastest option, with a medium-to-soft alternative. Motorsport director Dario Marrafuschi said, “The yellow tyre has shown sufficiently consistent performance and can offer good strategic flexibility in the event of race neutralisation.” That was a forecast for that event, not a general ranking of the compounds or a guarantee of the result.

Why forecasts change during a race

Rain, temperature and grip

Rain can alter the racing line, surface temperature and tyre degradation at once. A strategy calculated for a dry, rubbered-in track may become unusable when the circuit is damp or cooling. Teams then reassess whether slicks remain viable, whether an intermediate tyre is needed and how long each stint can last.

Safety Cars and Virtual Safety Cars

A Safety Car compresses the field and lets a car pit with a smaller relative time loss. A Virtual Safety Car also reduces the effective cost of a stop because every driver is running under a controlled delta. Pirelli’s 2026 Spanish Grand Prix report said a Virtual Safety Car helped drivers extend stints and made one-stop strategies the preferred choice for much of the field.

Unexpected degradation

Pirelli’s 2026 Dutch Grand Prix race-day account described rain, changed track conditions and more significant degradation than had appeared the previous day. Teams moved toward two- or three-stop plans even though the pre-race expectation had been different. The example shows why teams treat a strategy as a live forecast rather than a fixed schedule.

Event examples: the same “one-stop” idea can mean different things

Event and source context Assessment What changed or mattered
2026 British Grand Prix, pre-race forecast C2 to hard one-stop projected fastest; medium to soft offered as an alternative. The yellow medium’s consistency was viewed as strategically flexible if a race neutralisation occurred.
2026 Dutch Grand Prix, pre-race preview One-stop looked quickest on paper. Limited overtaking increased the cost of stopping; a third stint could be considered under a Virtual Safety Car or for an undercut if traffic allowed.
2026 Dutch Grand Prix, race-day account Teams shifted toward two- or three-stop approaches. Rain changed the track and temperature profile, while degradation was greater than expected.
2026 Spanish Grand Prix, race report One-stop became preferred for much of the field. A Virtual Safety Car allowed drivers to extend stints and reduced the effective stop penalty.

Rules that constrain the choices

Tyre strategy operates within the sporting regulations. Formula 1’s 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya preview stated that drivers in a dry race had to use at least two different slick compounds. That statement is tied to the season and event context; teams and fans should consult the applicable FIA Sporting Regulations for the current race rather than assume the requirement is permanent or identical every year.

When a rule requires multiple slick compounds, a team must reserve a legal combination even if a different tyre sequence appears faster in simulation. If rain changes the race, the applicable requirements and tyre-use decisions can differ, so the pit wall continues checking the regulations alongside the performance model.

How a strategy gains an actual position

A successful call normally follows a chain of events: the team identifies a rival within reach, predicts a meaningful pace difference, stops at a safe moment, produces fast laps in clean air and rejoins where the driver can defend or pass. Breaking any link can turn a theoretically faster plan into a net loss.

  • Undercut gain: the new tyre’s pace before the rival’s stop exceeds the pit-lane and warm-up deficit.
  • Overcut gain: clean-air laps and the rival’s slow warm-up or traffic outweigh the time surrendered by staying out.
  • Long-stint gain: a later stop leaves the driver with enough tyre advantage and laps to overtake.
  • Neutralisation gain: a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car reduces the stop cost and can make an otherwise inferior plan viable.

Drivers also help the calculation. They manage tyres to prevent overheating, deliver a qualifying-style lap when the undercut window opens and communicate whether grip is improving or falling away. Strategy is therefore a team operation involving the driver, engineers, weather analysts and pit crew, not a single radio instruction made in isolation.

How to read a strategy graphic during a broadcast

  1. Check each car’s current compound and tyre age, not only its position.
  2. Look for a gap large enough to absorb a pit stop without rejoining in traffic.
  3. Note whether a rival’s tyres are degrading or still producing stable lap times.
  4. Watch the first two laps after a stop for warm-up; an apparent undercut may not have worked yet.
  5. Consider the circuit’s passing difficulty before assuming a faster car can recover places.
  6. Re-evaluate after a Safety Car, Virtual Safety Car, rain shower or major temperature change.

The key question is not “Which compound is fastest?” It is “Which sequence gives this driver the best finishing position after pit-lane time, tyre behaviour, traffic, overtaking and race interruptions are all included?”
