When two Formula 1 teammates collide, the stewards do not apply a special teammate penalty. They investigate the incident under the FIA regulations, use the Driving Standards Guidelines as an interpretive aid, reconstruct each car’s position and available space, identify the action that caused contact, assess the effect on the other car, and then decide whether responsibility and a penalty are established. The result is case-specific: teammate status may matter to the team’s consequences, but it does not by itself decide fault or punishment.
The governing principle: regulations first, guidelines second
F1 stewards are responsible for applying the Formula 1 regulations to an incident. The FIA’s Driving Standards Guidelines help them interpret common racing situations, but the FIA explicitly says the guidelines have no regulatory value. They are not a substitute for the Sporting Regulations and cannot create an automatic offence or penalty on their own.

That distinction matters after a teammate collision. A television viewer may see two cars from the same team make contact and assume the stewards will treat the event as an internal team matter. The formal inquiry is different. The stewards ask what each driver did under the applicable rules, what the available evidence proves, and whether one driver was responsible for the contact. The fact that the cars share a garage does not establish blame.
The FIA describes the guidelines as documents that assist the stewards in seeking fairness and consistency alongside the FIA Formula 1 Regulations, video and technical evidence, Driver Steward input, and, where appropriate, statements from the drivers and teams involved. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has described stewarding as a “hugely complex task” performed voluntarily across the FIA’s championships.

Is there a separate rule for teammates?
No teammate-specific rule or directly comparable teammate case is established in the material available for this topic. The safest way to understand a collision between teammates is therefore as an incident-specific inquiry, not as a special category with a predetermined sentence.
Both cars remain competitors on track. The stewards still need to determine who had a right to space, whether a driver made a controllable move, whether a loss of control caused the contact, and what happened as a result. Team ownership can become relevant to sporting or operational consequences outside the basic fault analysis, but it does not turn a collision into automatic shared blame or automatic punishment.
Two teammates can collide and leave the stewards with different possible findings: one driver may be wholly or predominantly responsible, both drivers may have contributed, or the evidence may not justify a penalty. The outcome depends on the facts recorded in the decision, not on the team relationship.

What evidence do the stewards examine?
Stewards combine several forms of evidence rather than relying on a single television angle. The material identified by the FIA includes:
- Broadcast and circuit video: Multiple angles can show the approach to the corner, steering inputs, braking, the contact point and the cars’ movement afterward.
- In-car video: Onboard footage helps establish what each driver could see and how the car was positioned relative to the other vehicle.
- Technical evidence: Data and other technical material can help clarify speed, braking, steering, wheel lock-up and the sequence leading to contact.
- Driver Steward input: A steward with driver experience contributes to the panel’s interpretation of racing circumstances.
- Statements: Where appropriate, the stewards may consider statements from the drivers and the teams involved.
- The written regulations and guidelines: These provide the legal framework and the interpretive principles used to evaluate the observed conduct.
The evidence is considered together. A dramatic camera angle may not show the relative position at the apex, while an onboard view may reveal a lock-up or steering correction that changes the interpretation. Likewise, a driver’s explanation can be relevant without overruling video or technical evidence.

The decision sequence stewards use
An incident decision normally follows a practical chain of reasoning. The wording can vary, but the underlying questions are consistent.
- Identify the incident and evidence reviewed. The decision records the cars involved and the video, onboard and other material examined.
- Reconstruct the cars’ relative positions. The panel determines who was ahead, alongside or behind at key points such as turn-in and the apex.
- Determine the available racing room. If a car had an established position on the inside or outside, the stewards assess whether the other car left the space required by the applicable guidance.
- Examine each driver’s action. Braking, steering, throttle application, wheel lock-up, understeer, oversteer and any movement toward the other car are considered in sequence.
- Connect the action to the contact. The decision explains whether a specific action caused the cars to touch, rather than simply noting that contact occurred.
- Assess the effect. The panel considers damage, a car being forced wide, a loss of position or another material consequence shown by the evidence.
- Assign responsibility. The stewards decide whether one driver was wholly or predominantly to blame, whether responsibility was shared, or whether the evidence does not support a penalty.
- Select the case-specific outcome. If a penalty is warranted, the stewards impose the sanction permitted by the regulations and explain it in the decision.
This sequence is why a short steward document can contain more useful information than a headline saying that “the teammates crashed.” It ties the ruling to observable facts and explains the causal link between a driving action and the result.
Why relative position and racing room matter
In an overtaking collision, the cars’ positions at the approach and apex can be decisive. The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint decision illustrates this point. The stewards found that Isaac Hadjar’s Car 6 had its front axle ahead of Kimi Antonelli’s Car 12 before the apex of Turn 6. Under the Driving Standards Guidelines, that position entitled Hadjar to racing room on the inside.
The entitlement was not based on driver reputation or team identity. It came from the measured relationship between the cars. Once the panel decided that Hadjar had established the relevant position, it examined whether Antonelli left the space and remained in control of his car.
For a teammate collision, the same questions would apply. The stewards would need to determine whether the inside car was sufficiently alongside, whether the outside car could reasonably hold its line, and whether either driver moved into space already occupied by the other. “We are teammates” is not an answer to those positional questions.

The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint example
The official example is not a teammate case, but it shows the logic stewards can use. On Lap 1 at Turn 6, Antonelli in Car 12 collided with Hadjar in Car 6. The panel reviewed video and in-car video. It found that Hadjar’s front axle was ahead before the apex and that he was therefore entitled to racing room on the inside.

The decision then identified Antonelli’s driving action: he locked a rear wheel and understeered into Hadjar. That pushed Hadjar wide and caused him to lose a position. The stewards concluded that Antonelli was wholly to blame and imposed a 10-second time penalty.
Each part of the reasoning matters:
| Decision element | Finding in the Chinese Sprint |
|---|---|
| Evidence | Video and in-car video were reviewed. |
| Relative position | Hadjar’s front axle was ahead before the apex. |
| Space | Hadjar was entitled to racing room on the inside under the guidelines. |
| Driving action | Antonelli locked a rear wheel and understeered into Hadjar. |
| Effect | Hadjar was pushed wide and lost a position. |
| Responsibility | Antonelli was found wholly to blame. |
| Penalty | A 10-second time penalty was imposed. |
The 10-second penalty is an illustration of one outcome, not a universal penalty for contact and not a teammate-collision tariff. A different incident can produce a different finding if the positions, control, contact or consequences differ.
How a teammate collision can produce different findings
Because there is no established special teammate standard, the same factual framework can lead to several conclusions.
One driver clearly causes the contact
If the evidence shows that one driver lost control, failed to leave entitled space or made a move that directly caused the collision, the stewards can assign primary responsibility to that driver. The Chinese Sprint example demonstrates this type of causal finding, although the drivers there were not teammates.

Both drivers contribute
Two cars can arrive at a corner with overlapping responsibility. For example, the evidence may show that one driver made an aggressive move while the other closed the available space. The panel must still connect each action to the contact before deciding whether a penalty is justified.
The evidence does not establish blame
Contact alone does not prove an offence. If video, technical material and statements do not show that either driver was wholly or predominantly responsible, the stewards may decline to impose a penalty. The absence of a penalty is a factual conclusion about the evidence, not a privilege granted because the drivers are teammates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What penalty should readers expect?
There is no fixed penalty that follows simply from two teammates touching. The documented 10-second time penalty in the Chinese Sprint is one case-specific sanction. It should not be converted into a rule that every teammate collision receives 10 seconds, or that every collision produces a time penalty at all.
The written decision is the authoritative place to see the actual outcome and reasoning for a particular incident. Readers should look for the responsibility finding and the explanation of how the penalty follows from the conduct and consequences. Headlines often omit the position at the apex, the available room or the evidence that made the difference.

How to analyze a teammate collision yourself
When watching a replay or reading a decision, use the following checklist instead of starting with the team radio or the final penalty:
- Where was each car at turn-in?
- Which car was ahead at the apex, and by how much?
- Was either car sufficiently alongside to claim racing room?
- Did both drivers have a usable line through the corner?
- Did braking, a wheel lock-up, understeer or oversteer change the car’s path?
- Which movement made contact inevitable?
- Was a car forced wide, damaged or deprived of a position?
- What video and technical evidence did the stewards cite?
- Did the panel find one driver wholly or predominantly responsible, shared responsibility, or insufficient evidence?
- Does the stated penalty match the conduct and the consequences described in the decision?
This method separates the incident’s sporting facts from the team’s internal reaction. A team may issue instructions, investigate procedures or manage future racing, but those actions are different from the stewards’ regulatory finding.
Version and date checks matter
The FIA regulations index lists the 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 09, published October 1, 2026. That indexed listing is the current reference point identified for this subject. The full text of Issue 09 was not opened in the material available here, so an operative article number or verbatim current rule should not be quoted without verifying that issue directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRegulations and guidance can be revised during a season. A decision written under one issue should be read with the rules applicable on the date of the event. Historical wording can explain how an earlier panel expressed its threshold, but it cannot safely be treated as the current text without confirmation.
What is not established about teammate penalties?
No named statistic, penalty rate or count of teammate-collision sanctions is established in the official material considered for this topic. There are also no two directly comparable teammate cases here that would support a meaningful table of “usual” punishments.
For future comparisons, the most useful axes are the relative position at turn-in and the apex, whether racing room existed, whether contact followed a loss of control or a deliberate move, the effect on the other car and its position, the evidence available, the responsibility finding and the penalty. Comparing incidents on those terms is more reliable than counting headlines or assuming that every intra-team crash is treated alike.
The practical answer
When teammates collide, F1 stewards decide the case the same fundamental way they decide other on-track incidents: regulations govern; guidelines assist; evidence establishes the cars’ positions and actions; and the panel traces causation and consequences before assigning responsibility. Teammate status does not supply a shortcut to either blame or leniency. The final penalty, if any, depends on what that specific incident proves.
