A fire in either vehicle can start in wiring, plastics, tires, upholstery or other shared materials. The additional hazards arise when an EV’s high-voltage traction battery is damaged or involved: cells can retain electrical energy, enter thermal runaway, release toxic or flammable gases, expose responders to shock and reignite after flames appear to be out.
That distinction matters more than a simple claim that one powertrain catches fire more often. Fire frequency, battery involvement, flame behavior, suppression effort, toxic exposure, shock risk and reignition are separate questions, and the available evidence does not answer them with one universal EV-versus-gasoline number.

What makes a battery-involved EV fire different?
An EV fire is not automatically a battery fire
Every vehicle contains combustible materials and energized systems. An EV can burn in a collision, a wiring fault, a charging incident or an interior fire without the traction battery becoming involved. In those cases, the visible fire behavior can resemble that of a gasoline vehicle because the burning materials are similar.
The defining difference appears when heat, crushing, penetration or another failure damages the high-voltage battery. A traction battery contains many cells. Damage to one or more cells can leave energy stored in the pack even after the vehicle is disabled. That remaining, or “stranded,” energy is one reason responders treat a damaged EV as an electrical hazard rather than assuming that disconnecting the vehicle has removed all danger.

Thermal runaway can continue after the first flames
In thermal runaway, a damaged cell generates heat faster than it can release it. The heat can damage neighboring cells, producing a cascading event and releasing gases that may ignite. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) identified damaged cells undergoing thermal runaway as a hazard in its Safety Risks to Emergency Responders from Lithium-Ion Battery Fires in Electric Vehicles, adopted November 13, 2020. That report examined three post-crash fires and one non-crash fire; its findings concern those investigated events and battery-involved fires, not every EV fire.
Because a damaged pack may contain hot or unstable cells after visible flames are suppressed, a vehicle can appear controlled and later flare up. Reignition is therefore a post-suppression risk, not proof that firefighters failed to extinguish an ordinary surface fire.
Do electric cars catch fire more often than gasoline cars?
There is no current, directly comparable fleet-wide rate in the evidence reviewed here that supports answering simply “more” or “less.” A meaningful comparison must specify the denominator, vehicle age, geography, crash versus non-crash events and the outcome being counted. A count of insurance claims is not interchangeable with a count of fires in fatal crashes, and neither is a complete measure of all vehicles in service.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 Electric Vehicle Fire Primer for Fleet Managers notes that EVs have been in use for less time than gasoline-powered vehicles, making long-term frequency comparisons difficult. The primer summarizes an April 2021 Highway Loss Data Institute analysis that found comparable non-crash claim frequencies between EV models and conventional counterparts. It also summarizes an NTSB analysis of fatal-crash records that found fewer fires among EVs in that dataset, while noting limitations.

Those findings do not establish a present-day fire rate for the entire EV fleet. They use different populations and measures, and the NTSB fatal-crash analysis cannot be converted into a general claim about all driving, charging or parking fires. A responsible answer is that incidence remains dataset-dependent, while the consequences of a battery-involved event have distinct responder hazards.
How EV and gasoline fires compare by risk factor
| Question | What can be said about EVs | What can be said about gasoline vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| How often does a fire start? | No single current fleet-wide comparison is established. Older analyses measured different outcomes. | No directly matched figure is established in the evidence used here. |
| Is the traction battery involved? | Only some EV fires involve the high-voltage pack; those events create the special hazards discussed here. | There is no equivalent high-voltage traction-battery system in a conventional gasoline powertrain. |
| Can stored electrical energy remain? | Yes. A damaged pack can retain stranded energy after a crash or apparent shutdown. | The specific stranded-energy mechanism described for a high-voltage EV pack does not apply. |
| Can cells enter thermal runaway? | Yes, when battery cells are damaged or overheated. | Not in the EV battery sense; a gasoline vehicle has different fuel and component hazards. |
| How long does the vehicle burn? | Controlled freeburn tests of six models typically burned out within approximately one hour after ignition, but that is not a real-incident control time. | No directly comparable duration is established by the cited evidence. |
| How much suppression effort is needed? | NREL says a high-voltage-battery fire may require more time and water than an internal-combustion vehicle fire, depending on the vehicle and incident. | Requirements vary with the fuel load, location and conditions; no matched quantity is established here. |
| Can toxic or flammable gases be released? | Physical damage to an EV or its battery may cause immediate or delayed release of toxic and/or flammable gases, according to NHTSA. | Combustion also produces hazardous smoke and gases, but the battery-specific delayed-release warning does not apply. |
| Is electric shock a concern? | Yes. Exposed high-voltage components must be treated as energized until trained responders make the vehicle safe. | Electrical hazards still exist, but the high-voltage traction-battery scenario is different. |
| Can the vehicle reignite? | Yes, if damaged-cell thermal activity has not been fully addressed. | Reignition can occur in ordinary fires, but the battery-cell mechanism is specific to battery-involved EV incidents. |
Why can an EV battery fire reignite?
Suppressing visible flames does not necessarily cool every damaged cell or remove all stored energy from a pack. Cells hidden inside a sealed or damaged enclosure may continue heating. If thermal runaway spreads from one cell to another, a new release of hot gases can produce flames after the exterior fire seems extinguished.
The NTSB’s 2020 safety report used the term “stranded” energy for energy remaining in a damaged battery. That energy contributes to both shock exposure and the possibility of reignition. The practical implication is that responders must monitor the vehicle and follow the manufacturer’s emergency-response information rather than treating a quiet, smoke-free moment as proof that the hazard has ended.
How long does an electric-car fire burn?
Controlled freeburn testing
On May 22, 2024, UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) described controlled freeburn tests involving six popular EV models. Researchers heated each battery until thermal runaway was confirmed and then allowed the vehicle to burn without the intervention protocol used at an incident. Under those specific conditions, vehicles typically burned out within approximately one hour after ignition.

That figure describes experimental burn-out time, not the time firefighters need to control a real fire. A crash can deform the pack, block access, spread fire to nearby vehicles or structures, change ventilation and require simultaneous rescue operations. Water application, defensive tactics and monitoring also change the timeline. It is not valid to quote the one-hour freeburn result as a universal EV response time.
Suppression can take longer
NREL’s 2024 primer says a fire involving the high-voltage battery may take more time and water to extinguish than a fire in an internal-combustion vehicle. Depending on the vehicle and incident, the primer describes directing significant water at the battery pack or allowing the vehicle to burn itself out. It also states that no other tools or products were then proven to effectively extinguish a high-voltage battery fire.
Those are professional-response observations, not instructions for an owner to improvise a firefighting technique. The amount of water, access point, monitoring period and decision to let a vehicle burn are incident-specific choices for trained fire services.
What hazards do occupants and responders face?
Electric shock
NHTSA advises treating exposed high-voltage components as a possible shock hazard. Crash damage can expose cables, connectors or battery components, and the absence of engine noise does not establish that the system is de-energized. The risk is especially serious for people reaching into a wrecked vehicle, cutting into it or attempting to move damaged battery components.

Toxic and flammable gases
NHTSA warns that physical damage to an EV or its high-voltage battery may cause immediate or delayed release of toxic and/or flammable gases and fire. Smoke from any burning vehicle is hazardous, so occupants should move away from the vehicle and avoid inhaling smoke. A delayed release means people should not return simply because flames are temporarily absent.
Stored heat and hidden damage
A pack can be damaged internally even when the outside of the vehicle looks relatively intact. Conversely, an obvious vehicle fire may not have reached the pack. Only trained responders with appropriate equipment and vehicle-specific information can determine which condition applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if an EV is smoking, damaged or on fire?
- Get people away from the vehicle. Leave the car if it is safe to do so, move upwind and keep others away from smoke, flames and leaking materials.
- Call emergency services. NHTSA’s public guidance is to call 911 in an emergency. Tell the dispatcher that the vehicle is electric or hybrid, if known, and provide the location and any crash details.
- Do not touch exposed high-voltage parts. Do not cut orange cables, open a damaged battery enclosure or reach under the vehicle. Assume exposed components may be energized.
- Do not attempt battery service or firefighting. NHTSA says traction batteries should not be serviced without proper training and specialized equipment. Generic extinguishers, blankets and consumer protective gear are not established solutions for a high-voltage battery fire.
- Give responders the vehicle information. If available without approaching the hazard, provide the make, model, model year and whether the vehicle was charging. Responders can use the applicable emergency-response guide.
- Stay clear after apparent extinguishment. A damaged battery can reignite. Follow the fire department’s instructions about evacuation, towing, storage and re-entry.
Why vehicle-specific guidance matters
Battery layout, disconnect locations, cooling systems and recommended tactics differ among models. NHTSA directs owners to contact the vehicle dealer and warns against servicing a traction battery without proper training and specialized equipment. Professional responders use manufacturer emergency-response guides to identify high-voltage components, lifting points and hazards that are not visible from outside.

What current testing still cannot establish
FSRI reported in August 2026 that its technical report, Full-Scale Electric Vehicle Fire Experiments and Recommendations for Fire Incident Response, found that more data are needed to characterize EV fire dynamics sufficiently for safe and effective fire-control strategies. The report description alone does not provide a basis for quoting comparative numerical values for EV and gasoline peak fire size, suppression time or water consumption.
FSRI’s 2024 update also placed the work in the context of approximately 34,000 fire departments in North America needing better information, a figure stated by lead research engineer Adam Barowy as context rather than a newly verified census. The continuing research effort reflects the complexity of comparing vehicles under controlled tests with vehicles burning in varied crashes, garages, roadsides and charging locations.
The practical answer for drivers
For a gasoline car, a fire is chiefly managed as a conventional vehicle fire involving fuel, plastics, wiring and surrounding materials. For an EV, the same kinds of fire can occur, but a battery-involved event adds high-voltage shock, stranded energy, thermal runaway, delayed gas release and possible reignition. Those added hazards affect professional response even when the initial flames look ordinary.

Do not use an unqualified fire-count statistic to decide that one powertrain is universally safer or more dangerous. Ask which vehicles, years, incidents and outcomes were counted. In an actual emergency, the useful decision is simpler: evacuate, call emergency services, warn responders that the vehicle is electric, avoid the damaged vehicle and follow vehicle-specific professional guidance.
