Electric delivery trucks can lower energy costs per mile and avoid many engine-related maintenance jobs, but neither saving is automatic. The result depends on your electricity tariff, diesel price, truck efficiency, annual mileage, route and charging setup. To know whether an electric truck will save your fleet money, compare its costs on the routes it will actually run—and include purchase, charging, payload and downtime, not just fuel and service.
How electric trucks reduce fuel costs
A battery-electric truck replaces diesel with electricity. The useful comparison is the cost of energy per mile, not the pump price beside the electricity rate: a truck uses different quantities of each energy source, and electricity costs can vary by tariff and charging time.
- Diesel cost per mile: gallons consumed per mile × the fleet’s diesel price per gallon.
- Electricity cost per mile: kilowatt-hours consumed per mile × the fleet’s effective electricity cost per kilowatt-hour. Include applicable tariffs and charging losses when known.
Multiply the difference by annual miles to estimate annual energy-cost savings. Vehicle efficiency, the local diesel price, the utility rate, and when and where charging happens all affect the result. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center guidance recommends comparing fueling costs per mile; a general comparison cannot replace a fleet’s own rates and usage.
What a field evaluation’s example does—and does not—show
A National Renewable Energy Laboratory field evaluation of medium-duty plug-in electric delivery trucks modeled a specific case: increasing annual electric-truck travel from 8,488 to 10,610 miles (a 25% increase) produced an additional $750 per vehicle per year in savings at an assumed diesel price of $3.79 per gallon. With diesel instead assumed at $2.25 per gallon, the modeled additional annual savings were $322 per vehicle. Both examples used electricity at $0.102 per kilowatt-hour, based on the evaluated fleet’s utility bill, and the vehicle efficiencies specified in the report. These are 2017 study outputs under stated assumptions—not current prices, a forecast, or a guaranteed saving for another fleet. See the NREL field evaluation.

Why maintenance can cost less
Battery-electric trucks do not need conventional engine oil changes and avoid some engine and exhaust-system maintenance. The U.S. Department of Energy’s fleet guidance describes battery-electric vehicles as eliminating many maintenance needs associated with gasoline vehicles, while the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) identifies lower maintenance as a contributor to lower operating costs in its commercial-vehicle analysis.
That mechanism does not establish a universal maintenance-savings percentage for delivery trucks. Repair costs depend on the truck, its service requirements and how it is used. For a dollar comparison, use your fleet’s maintenance records and the chosen truck’s service schedule, or a study of that specific truck class. The ICCT working paper covers commercial vans and pickups; its modeled results should not be treated as measured savings for every medium-duty delivery truck.
When lower operating costs do—and do not—mean a lower total cost
Fuel and maintenance are only parts of the ownership calculation. A truck with cheaper energy can still cost more overall if its purchase price, charging site work, lost payload or operational constraints outweigh those savings. Compare costs across the ownership period your fleet expects to use, with assumptions made explicit.

A DOE summary of NREL’s 2021 analysis says its total-cost comparison included vehicle purchase price, fuel, operations and maintenance, driver wages and benefits, insurance, tires, permits, tolls, refueling or recharging dwell time, and lost payload from heavier powertrains. The analysis compared six powertrains and included Class 4 parcel-delivery trucks. It found battery-electric vehicles may be a better fit for shorter ranges or where dwell time matters less; that is scenario guidance, not a universal ranking. See the DOE summary and the NREL study.
Build your comparison around costs and constraints that apply to your routes:
- Truck purchase price and expected ownership period.
- Diesel and electricity costs, using actual fleet prices, tariffs and charging schedules.
- Maintenance and repair costs based on fleet records and the truck’s service requirements.
- Charging hardware, site electrical capacity, installation, utility coordination and any applicable demand charges.
- Labor, insurance, tires and downtime.
- Range, payload, charging dwell time, uptime and dispatch flexibility.
- Any incentives verified for the fleet’s location and purchase; do not assume they will apply or continue.
The ICCT’s 2022 commercial-van and pickup analysis used a five-year first-owner horizon. Its finding that battery-electric vehicles generally had lower modeled operating costs reflects lower maintenance, greater powertrain efficiency and lower fuel costs in that analysis; it is not a direct measurement for every delivery truck. Its scope and ownership period matter when interpreting the ICCT results.

Which routes suit electric delivery trucks?
Route fit is part of the cost case because range, payload and recharging time affect both energy use and whether a truck can complete its work. Battery-electric trucks can be a stronger option when routes are predictable, daily distance fits within usable range, and vehicles return to a depot with time to recharge. Stop-and-go operation can also make use of electric-drive efficiency. These factors do not guarantee savings; they determine whether the truck can perform the route without costly changes to dispatch or uptime.
Assess routes using daily miles, payload, stop pattern, seasonal conditions, available charging window and reserve range. The U.S. Department of Energy’s federal fleet guidance describes battery-electric vehicles as best suited to set routes within vehicle range and dependent on charging infrastructure. See DOE Federal Energy Management Program vehicle guidance.

Charging availability, site capacity and charging schedules can materially affect operating cost and vehicle availability. The Alternative Fuels Data Center advises fleets to plan for charging and coordinate vehicle energy needs and charging times with utilities, vehicle providers and charging-equipment providers. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles may require different charging units or cables, so confirm equipment needs for the specific vehicle. See the AFDC charging guidance for fleets.

For each depot, check whether the electrical service can support the planned vehicles and charging schedule, what site upgrades or installation may be needed, and whether the utility tariff makes some charging times more expensive. Include those costs and any charging-related dwell time in the total-cost comparison rather than treating charging as free or automatically available.
How to estimate savings for your fleet
- Choose a real route and truck. Record route miles, payload, stop pattern, seasonal conditions and the hours available for charging. Use the candidate truck’s current specifications for range, energy consumption and payload.
- Calculate diesel energy cost per mile. Use the fleet truck’s fuel consumption and the diesel price the fleet actually pays.
- Calculate electric energy cost per mile. Use the candidate truck’s expected kilowatt-hours per mile and the effective electricity cost under the relevant tariff and charging schedule. Include charging losses when known.
- Estimate annual energy-cost difference. Multiply each cost per mile by the annual miles that truck would actually run on the route.
- Use fleet-specific maintenance and repair figures. Compare the diesel truck’s records with the electric truck’s service requirements; do not substitute a general maintenance percentage.
- Add ownership and operational costs. Include purchase, charging equipment and installation, labor, insurance, tires, payload effects, downtime and the planned ownership period. Add only incentives that are currently verified for your fleet.
- Test operational fit. Check that range, charging time and site capacity allow the truck to meet its schedule, including a practical reserve for route variation.
Keep the assumptions beside each result. A single average “savings” figure conceals differences in mileage, energy prices, vehicle efficiency, charging, and route needs.

Cost projections are not current market-wide proof of savings. A DOE summary published in September 2021 reported an NREL projection that battery-electric and fuel-cell commercial trucks could be economically competitive with diesel by 2025 in some operating scenarios. That was a forecast tied to its scenarios, not evidence that every truck class reached cost parity; see the DOE summary.

In March 2022, DOE summarized a separate NREL projection that nearly half of medium- and heavy-duty trucks might be cheaper to buy, operate and maintain as zero-emission vehicles by 2030 under continued technology improvements. The summary said smaller battery-electric trucks could reach cost competitiveness earlier than heavier trucks. Those findings are projections under assumptions, not present-day prices or a guarantee for a particular fleet. See the DOE summary.
A 2023 study analyzed more than 2.3 million operational miles across multiple medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicle types and reported annual energy-cost savings across platforms. The vehicle mix included buses and other types, so its aggregate results are not a delivery-truck-specific savings estimate. See the DOE record.
Truck specifications, purchase prices, utility tariffs, incentives and charging installation costs vary and can change. As of 2026, the cited material does not establish a current market-wide dollar saving for a representative electric delivery-truck fleet. Verify local costs and current specifications before relying on a numerical comparison. Truck powertrain suitability also depends on vehicle design, technology costs and energy prices; battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks may suit different applications, according to Argonne’s overview.
