A drag racing Christmas Tree tells each driver when the car is staged and when the run may begin. The pre-stage and stage bulbs show the car’s position; amber lights count down to green; red signals a foul start. NHRA’s Pro Tree and Sportsman Tree use different amber patterns and timings, and the event’s rules determine which applies.

What the Christmas Tree does

“Each race is started by an electronic device commonly called a Christmas Tree,” NHRA explains in its NHRA 101 guide. The device works with beams and photocells near the starting line to detect each car’s position and coordinate the start with the timing equipment.

Each lane has its own staging indicators and amber, green, and red lights. Read the small staging bulbs first: they show how far the car has moved into position. The larger lamps then show the start sequence.

What pre-stage and stage mean

Pre-stage: approaching the line

The pre-stage bulb comes on when the car’s front tires break the first beam. NHRA describes this point as about seven inches from the starting line. It is an NHRA explanation, not a universal measurement for every track or sanctioning body.

Stage: in position to start

The stage bulb lights when the front tires reach the second beam. The car is then staged for the start. The two indicators are position cues, not a countdown: the amber sequence follows once the start procedure begins. NHRA’s glossary defines the staging terms, while the FIA’s 2021 technical regulations provide separate regulatory context for drag-racing beams and starting systems.

How the amber lights lead to green

The amber pattern depends on the type of start. In NHRA’s descriptions, a Pro Tree flashes all three amber lights at once, while a Sportsman, or full, Tree illuminates them one at a time. Green means the driver may make the run.

Mark Feldstein Drag Racing Christmas Tree Lighted Alarm Clock
  • A REPLICA DRAG STRIP CHRISTMAS TREE: Modelled on the staging light system every drag racer knows, with the lights flashing in sequence rather than simply glowing.
  • AN ENGINE WAKES YOU UP: Set the alarm and the sequence runs as it does at the strip, with tyres warming, staging lights flashing and an engine screaming into life instead of a beep.
  • WORKING TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY GAUGES: Functional gauges add to the dashboard realism and give the clock a second job on a nightstand, desk or garage bench.
  • ACRYLIC AND IRON IN MIDNIGHT BLACK: Built from acrylic and iron metal with a midnight black finish, so it has weight and presence rather than feeling like a novelty toy.
  • FOR THE RACING FAN: Requires 3 AA batteries, not included. A genuinely different gift for drag racing fans, gearheads and anyone with a garage worth decorating.
Feature Pro Tree Sportsman or full Tree
Amber pattern All three amber lights flash together. Three amber lights illuminate one after another.
Timing to green Green follows the amber flash by 0.4 seconds. Ambers are spaced 0.5 seconds apart; green follows the last amber by another 0.5 seconds.
Where used NHRA lists professional and other heads-up classes using the Pro start; class rules determine eligibility. Known as the full or Sportsman sequence; confirm the format for the event.

These timings and class descriptions are NHRA’s, not a guarantee that every track or series uses the same settings. NHRA’s NHRA 101 and glossary explain the sequences and terminology; check the event’s rules for its start format. A heads-up start is not the same as a handicap start, in which competitors may receive different start times.

What a red light means

A red light marks a foul start, such as a driver leaving before green. NHRA’s National Event “Christmas Tree” starting-line guide also notes that staging too deeply can trigger red in some cases. The specific ruling depends on the event’s rules, so a red light should not be assumed to have only one possible cause.

Reaction time and elapsed time are different

Reaction time measures how the driver’s launch relates to the start signal. Elapsed time (ET) measures how long the car takes to cover the timed course. They describe different parts of a run: a quick reaction is not the same as a quick ET. NHRA’s beginner explanation says the result depends on both the reaction to green and the car’s performance over the course (“New to NHRA Drag Racing? Here’s what you need to know”).

Why older reaction-time displays may look different

NHRA says that in 2003 it changed the convention so that .000 is perfect. Older displays used .400 as perfect on a Pro Tree and .500 on a Sportsman Tree. Keep that historical change in mind when reading archival time slips or watching older footage; do not apply the modern display convention to an older record without checking its context. NHRA recounts the change in “Happy Birthday, Christmas Tree” and its 2025 retrospective on changes in the sport.

A brief history of the Tree

NHRA says the Christmas Tree debuted at the 1963 Nationals in Indianapolis, replacing the flag starter. The device made the start a visible, electronic sequence that drivers and spectators could follow. NHRA’s history of the Tree and 2025 timeline both identify that first use.

Want a model-scale version?

For RC hobbyists, Stormer Hobbies describes the Traxxas DTS-1 as a portable RC drag timing system with a Christmas Tree and reaction-time, elapsed-time, and trap-speed functions (product listing). It is designed for model-scale racing, not for operating a full-size sanctioned dragstrip.
