An 8-speed automatic transmission changes engine speed and torque into eight selectable forward ratios without requiring the driver to operate a clutch pedal. In a conventional torque-converter design, engine power passes through fluid, planetary gearsets create different ratios, and electronically controlled clutches and brakes select the appropriate power path. Lower gears multiply torque for starting and acceleration; higher gears lower engine speed during cruising.
“8-speed” identifies the number of forward ratios, not one standardized internal design. The exact gearsets, clutch arrangement, control software, torque capacity, packaging and ratio spread depend on the specific transmission and vehicle.

What the “8-speed” label actually means
The label counts eight forward drive ratios. It does not tell you how many planetary gearsets are inside, which shift elements apply in each gear, whether the unit is installed longitudinally or transversely, or how its control system is programmed.
Most conventional examples use a torque converter between the engine and transmission. Other automatic-transmission architectures use different power-transfer methods, so the explanation below describes the conventional torque-converter type and then identifies where designs differ.

Why a vehicle needs several ratios
An engine produces useful power over a limited speed range. A low gear gives the output shaft much more torque than the engine is producing, allowing the vehicle to start moving and climb grades. As road speed rises, the transmission shifts to ratios that require less engine speed for the same vehicle speed. Eight forward ratios let engineers balance strong launch performance with relatively small steps between gears.
How engine power enters the transmission
1. The torque converter provides the launch connection
The engine crankshaft turns the torque converter’s housing and pump. Transmission fluid circulates inside the converter and drives its turbine, which is connected to the transmission input. Because the connection is fluid-based at launch, the engine can continue running when the vehicle is stopped with the brake applied. The converter also allows controlled slip while the vehicle pulls away, helping make the start smooth.
A stator inside many converters redirects fluid at low speed to increase torque multiplication. The exact stator and one-way-clutch design is transmission-specific, so not every eight-speed uses the same hardware.

2. A lock-up clutch can create a mechanical link
Once conditions allow, a lock-up clutch inside the converter can connect the engine and transmission more directly. This reduces the slip that a purely fluid coupling would otherwise produce. The clutch does not have to operate only in a simple on-or-off manner: Audi’s description of its 8-speed tiptronic says the clutch is normally closed, while controlled slip is permitted in some situations and the converter’s damping effect is retained for smooth starts.
That behavior is an example of Audi’s tiptronic, not a universal rule. Lock-up schedules, permitted slip and clutch hardware vary among transmissions.

How planetary gearsets create eight ratios
The three elements of a planetary set
A simple planetary gearset has a sun gear, a ring gear and a carrier holding planet gears. By driving one element, holding another stationary and taking output from the third, the set can provide reduction, direct drive, reverse rotation or an overdrive relationship. Connecting different planetary sets together creates many possible input-to-output paths in a compact housing.
The transmission does not move individual gears along shafts as a manual gearbox does. Instead, clutches connect rotating members to one another, while brake clutches hold selected members against the case. Releasing one shift element and applying another changes the active power path.
GM 8L90: a documented example
GM’s 8L90 illustrates one way to package eight ratios. GM engineering documentation describes four simple planetary gearsets, two brake clutches and three rotating clutches. Those components generate the transmission’s eight forward speeds and reverse. This is a specific rear-wheel-drive architecture, not a parts list that applies to every eight-speed automatic.

In first gear, the 4.56 ratio gives substantial reduction for launch. In eighth, the 0.65 ratio is an overdrive: the transmission input turns fewer times relative to the output than it would in a 1:1 direct ratio. The 7.0 spread describes the distance between the lowest and highest published ratios for this model.
How clutches and brakes select a gear
Each forward ratio is a particular combination of applied and released shift elements. A rotating clutch may connect two members of a planetary train; a brake clutch may hold a sun gear, ring gear or carrier stationary. The resulting constraint determines which member is the input, which is held and which delivers output.

During a shift, the controller coordinates the release of one element with the application of another. Hydraulic pressure must rise and fall at controlled rates so the new ratio engages without excessive flare, bind or shock. The precise combination for first through eighth gear differs by transmission family. There is no universal eight-speed clutch chart.

Why the shift can be smooth
Clutch pistons, friction plates and hydraulic passages are designed to manage the timing and pressure of engagement. The torque converter can absorb some torsional variation, while software can adjust pressure for load, temperature, throttle position and other operating conditions. The result is a ratio change that may be barely noticeable when conditions are steady, yet firm enough to transmit high torque under acceleration.
How electronic and hydraulic controls decide when to shift
The controller chooses a shift point
An electronic transmission controller evaluates operating information and selects a target ratio. Typical inputs can include vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle demand, calculated load and transmission-fluid temperature, although the exact sensor set differs by vehicle. The controller then commands solenoids that regulate hydraulic circuits for the shift clutches and, where fitted, the torque-converter clutch.
GM lists variable-force solenoids for clutch shifts and torque-converter-clutch operation on the 8L90. Variable force allows pressure to be tailored rather than treating every engagement as a fixed-pressure event.
Drive and Sport programs change the priorities
Audi says its dynamic shift program selects shift points automatically in Drive, generally favoring higher gears and lower engine speeds for efficiency. Sport mode changes that behavior by holding lower gears longer or downshifting sooner when the driver requests stronger response. These are examples of calibration choices; another manufacturer can use different maps and mode names.

What happens during a typical upshift
- Operating conditions are evaluated. The controller determines that vehicle speed, throttle demand and load favor the next ratio.
- Hydraulic commands change. Solenoids route pressure toward the clutch that must apply and away from the element that must release.
- Torque transfer is coordinated. The releasing and applying elements overlap in a controlled way so planetary members do not accelerate or decelerate abruptly.
- Converter operation is adjusted. The lock-up clutch may remain applied, release, or use controlled slip depending on the calibration and driving conditions.
- The new ratio is confirmed. Feedback from speed and pressure behavior lets the controller correct the command if the shift is not tracking its intended timing.
A downshift follows the same principle in the opposite direction, but the controller must account for the increase in engine speed and the driver’s requested acceleration.

Smaller rpm steps keep the engine closer to its preferred range
With more forward ratios across a given overall spread, the change in engine speed between adjacent gears can be smaller. Audi says the smaller rpm jumps in its eight-speed transmission help keep the engine near its preferred operating point. That can make acceleration feel more continuous and reduce the need for a large jump in engine speed after each shift.
A wide spread can combine a low launch gear with a tall cruise gear
The 8L90’s 4.56 first gear and 0.65 eighth gear demonstrate the idea: substantial reduction is available for moving off, while the highest ratio lowers engine speed at road speed. The transmission’s 7.0 overall spread is specific to that unit. Other eight-speed transmissions may use different first, intermediate and top ratios.
Eight gears do not guarantee better fuel economy
Efficiency depends on the complete transmission and vehicle: gear ratios, friction, converter lock-up range, hydraulic losses, software, engine characteristics, vehicle mass, aerodynamics and driving conditions all matter. The number eight alone is not proof that one vehicle will use less fuel than another.
Toyota’s 2016 description of its Direct Shift-8AT claims approximately a 50% reduction in clutch torque loss during rotation compared with a conventional six-speed transmission and describes a wider converter lock-up range. That is Toyota’s stated comparison for its Direct Shift-8AT, not a category-wide result for all eight-speed automatics.

How 8-speed designs differ between vehicles
Packaging and intended use strongly influence the internal design. GM’s 8L90 is a longitudinal rear-wheel-drive transmission. Hyundai Motor Group describes both front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive automatic variants, which require different packaging arrangements and power-flow layouts. A front-wheel-drive unit often has to fit beside the engine and may incorporate a final drive and differential in the same assembly; a rear-wheel-drive unit typically sends torque through a separate propeller shaft. The exact construction remains transmission-specific.

For that reason, a clutch application chart or torque rating should always be identified by transmission model. Applying the 8L90’s layout or ratios to an unrelated eight-speed can produce an incorrect diagnosis or expectation.
What the driver experiences
Starting from a stop
In Drive, the converter allows the engine to idle while the vehicle is stationary and then transmits torque progressively as the brake is released and the accelerator is applied. The transmission begins in a low ratio, where planetary reduction multiplies torque.
Steady acceleration
As speed rises, the controller commands successive upshifts. The ratio changes reduce engine speed in steps while keeping the engine within the range selected by the calibration. Moderate throttle generally encourages earlier upshifts; heavier demand can delay them or request a downshift.
Highway cruising
At a steady speed, the transmission can select a high ratio and may apply the converter lock-up clutch. Lower engine speed can reduce noise and pumping and friction losses, although the actual benefit depends on the engine, vehicle and calibration.
Sport or manual-select modes
A Sport program commonly prioritizes quicker response by using lower ratios for longer or downshifting with less throttle. If a vehicle offers manual gear selection, the driver requests a ratio but the controller still protects the transmission and engine within the limits programmed by the manufacturer.
