Driverless electric trucks navigate by combining cameras, lidar, radar, high-performance computers, digital maps and vehicle controls. The system builds a continuously updated model of the road, predicts how traffic and other objects may move, chooses a permitted maneuver and commands steering, acceleration or braking. It may change lanes, slow down, stop or wait rather than simply swerve. The truck can do this only inside its defined operational design domain (ODD)—the specific routes, road types, weather, traffic and procedures for which its automation was designed.
The driving process is a four-stage loop
An autonomous truck repeats the same basic loop many times per second. The names vary by supplier, but the logic is consistent: sense, interpret and locate, predict and plan, then control.

1. Sense the surroundings
A sensor suite observes lanes, signs, vehicles, pedestrians, road edges, barriers and debris. Cameras record visual detail. Lidar sends laser pulses and measures their reflections to estimate the distance and shape of nearby surfaces. Radar measures range and relative motion and can provide useful information when visual contrast is poor. Each sensor has limitations, so the truck is designed to combine their observations rather than depend on one device.

Onboard computers turn raw sensor returns into objects and road features: a vehicle ahead, a lane boundary, a stopped car on the shoulder or an obstruction in the travel lane. The system also estimates the truck’s position relative to the route. Digital maps and route information can describe expected lanes, junctions and road geometry, while live sensing detects changes such as a temporary closure or a newly fallen object. Public descriptions do not disclose every proprietary localization or sensor-fusion detail of individual demonstrators.

3. Predict and plan
Planning software estimates what detected road users might do next and selects a legal, physically achievable maneuver. It considers lane position, speed, traffic gaps, grade, curvature, the truck’s length and mass, available braking distance and the boundaries of the ODD. Possible actions include holding a lane, merging, changing lanes, yielding, slowing, stopping or waiting for a blocked path to clear.
4. Control the vehicle
Steering, propulsion and braking controllers translate the selected trajectory into commands. Feedback from the sensors checks whether the truck is following the path and whether conditions have changed. If an object moves into the planned path, the loop runs again and can replace the previous maneuver with a safer one.
What each sensor contributes
| Sensor | Useful information | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Cameras | Visual detail for lane markings, signs, signals, vehicle types and road users. | Performance can be reduced by darkness, glare, rain, fog, snow, spray, dirt or markings that are obscured. |
| Lidar | Laser-reflection measurements that produce geometric distance and shape information. | Returns can be affected by precipitation, contamination, reflective or unusual surfaces and hardware faults. |
| Radar | Object range and relative motion; a complementary measurement when camera or lidar interpretation is difficult. | It generally provides less visual detail than a camera and can require other sensors to classify an object precisely. |
| Maps and positioning | Expected road layout, route constraints and the truck’s estimated location. | Maps cannot describe every temporary change; live sensing remains necessary. |
Sensor fusion combines these different observations into an environment estimate. A camera may identify a sign, lidar may locate its physical position and radar may confirm that a moving object is approaching. Fusion improves resilience, but it is not a guarantee that every object will be detected in every condition. Rain, fog, snow, road spray, glare, construction equipment, dirt on a sensor window and electronic or mechanical faults can all degrade perception.

- Detect: sensors identify an object or unexpected road feature.
- Track: the system estimates its position, speed and direction and updates that estimate as new measurements arrive.
- Assess the path: software checks whether the object overlaps the truck’s projected trajectory and how much time and distance remain.
- Check alternatives: it evaluates braking, stopping, waiting, staying in lane or moving around the object. Adjacent lanes, shoulders, barriers, oncoming traffic and legal restrictions are part of this check.
- Execute and monitor: controls apply the selected steering, propulsion or braking commands while the system watches for changes.
A truck may therefore slow smoothly for a piece of debris, stop behind a blocked lane or wait for cross traffic. Steering around an object is appropriate only when there is enough verified space, the maneuver is allowed in the ODD and the truck can remain stable and clear of other road users. A lidar-based explanation from autonomous mining haul trucks illustrates the same general idea of detecting an object and slowing or stopping, but off-road mining behavior and hardware should not be treated as specifications for highway electric trucks.
Why an electric powertrain does not perform the navigation
Electric propulsion supplies movement; it does not replace the autonomous driving stack. A battery, inverter and electric motors provide acceleration and regenerative or friction braking. Separate sensors, computers, software and redundant control systems determine where and how the truck should move. Integration can require careful management of electrical power, thermal loads and available battery energy, especially on long grades or in heavy traffic, but electrification alone does not make obstacle detection safer.
Daimler’s Freightliner eCascadia demonstrator shows this division of responsibilities. It combines a production battery-electric truck platform with autonomous sensors, computing and Torc software. The electric platform moves the vehicle; the Level 4 technology interprets the route and commands the vehicle systems.
The operational design domain defines where “driverless” applies
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) uses operational design domain to describe the environmental, geographic, time-of-day, traffic and roadway conditions in which an automated system is intended to operate. For a truck, the ODD is the practical answer to “where and when can it drive itself?”

An ODD might limit operation to mapped freeway routes between specified freight hubs, daylight or particular weather conditions, and roads without active construction. A system demonstrated on a controlled highway route should not be assumed to handle a downtown street, an unmapped rural road, a snowstorm or a temporary work zone. When the truck approaches a condition outside its ODD, the approved response may be to reduce speed, pull over at a suitable location, stop or request assistance, depending on the system’s design and operating procedures.
FMCSA’s approach also treats performance as more than avoiding a collision in a single test. Evaluation must cover scenarios the truck may encounter within its ODD, and inspection and maintenance practices need to match the sensing equipment and intended operating conditions.
Redundancy provides a fallback, not a zero-crash promise
Steering, braking, power, computing and communications are safety-critical. Developers therefore describe backup paths and monitoring intended to keep the truck controllable if a primary component fails.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Daimler says its autonomous-ready Cascadia architecture includes backup steering and braking functions and monitors critical systems.
- Volvo says its VNL Autonomous uses duplicated safety-critical systems intended to enable a safe stop if a primary system fails.
- Safety procedures also involve route selection, remote or fleet monitoring, maintenance, hubs, trained personnel and coordination with emergency responders.
These are engineering safeguards and stated design goals, not evidence that crashes are impossible or that every manufacturer uses the same architecture. A redundant brake controller cannot compensate for an ODD violation, an unrecognized object or a road environment the system was not designed to interpret.

Maintenance is part of perception
Autonomy depends on sensors remaining clean, aligned, powered and connected. Dust, mud, salt film, ice, rain droplets and insect residue can obscure a camera or lidar window. A damaged mounting bracket can change calibration even when the lens looks clear. Fleets need inspection schedules, cleaning procedures, fault diagnostics and rules for removing a truck from autonomous operation when a sensor or actuator reports a problem.
Waymo has described passenger cars that use wipers and fluid nozzles to clear sensor surfaces. That is an example of a maintenance approach, not a published specification for a particular electric truck. The general lesson applies: automated driving requires service procedures for the complete sensor suite, not just routine tire and brake checks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse driver assistance with a driverless truck
“Driverless” should describe a system authorized to perform the driving task without a human continuously steering and watching the road in its approved conditions. Many commercial vehicles instead use driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane centering or automated emergency braking. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that Level 2 systems still require a driver to remain fully engaged and attentive.
Testing with a safety driver, supervised pilot operation and a vehicle that can complete a defined route without an onboard driver are different deployment stages. The automation level, ODD, human responsibilities and fallback procedure must be identified before treating a truck as genuinely driverless.

What the Freightliner eCascadia example actually establishes
In a May 8, 2024 release, Daimler described an autonomous Freightliner eCascadia technology demonstrator based on a production battery-electric truck. The release said it used Torc autonomous software and Level 4 sensors and computing, with a sensor bar incorporating cameras, lidar and radar. It also described an engineering cooling concept for the computing equipment and characterized the vehicle as a research and advanced-engineering project.
Daimler said it aimed to enter the United States market with production SAE Level 4 autonomous trucks by 2027. That was a company target stated in 2024, not confirmation that the target was achieved. The demonstrator should therefore be presented as evidence of an integrated electric-and-autonomous development program, not proof of a mature, broadly available driverless trucking service.
Daimler’s broader explanation has focused autonomous trucking on U.S. highway routes and identified shorter, repeatable routes as a potential use for a battery-electric demonstrator. Such a route strategy can simplify mapping, charging logistics, maintenance and monitoring, but it remains bounded by the stated ODD.

How to judge an autonomous-truck claim
When a manufacturer or operator announces an autonomous electric truck, ask these questions:
- Where can it operate? Look for named routes, road classes, weather limits, traffic conditions, time-of-day restrictions and construction-zone rules.
- What automation level is intended? Separate Level 2 assistance, supervised testing, remote support and Level 4 operation within an ODD.
- How are failures handled? Check for redundant steering and braking, system monitoring, minimum-risk-stop behavior and human or fleet response procedures.
- What is maintained? Sensor cleaning, calibration, software updates, actuator inspection and battery and thermal management are all relevant.
- What evidence exists? A simulation, closed-course test, public-road pilot, demonstrator and commercial deployment are not interchangeable evidence levels.
- Are safety numbers comparable? Sensor ranges and collision figures are meaningful only when test conditions, routes, weather, vehicle loads and reporting methods match.
The wider safety context
NHTSA recorded 39,254 people killed in U.S. motor-vehicle crashes in 2024. That is an overall road-crash statistic, not a measurement of autonomous-truck safety and not evidence that automation caused or prevented any particular outcome. No directly comparable, independent crash-rate or obstacle-detection statistic for autonomous electric trucks is established here. The responsible conclusion is narrower: layered sensing, planning, control, redundancy and disciplined ODD management are intended to reduce risk, but real-world safety depends on the entire operating system around the truck.
As John O’Leary, president and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, said in the company’s May 2024 release: “By combining zero-emission and autonomous technologies in one product, we are testing solutions for challenges our customers are likely to face in the future.” That statement describes the manufacturer’s intent; it is not independent evidence of safety or commercial readiness.
Bottom line for road users and fleet operators
A driverless electric truck sees with multiple sensors, reasons with software and moves through electronically controlled steering, propulsion and braking. It avoids obstacles by estimating what they are doing, checking the available space and choosing among slowing, stopping, waiting or maneuvering. The capability is always conditional: the route, weather, traffic, maintenance state, vehicle dynamics and fallback procedures must remain within the truck’s ODD. Electric propulsion changes how the truck is powered, while the autonomous stack determines how it navigates.
