Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Depreciation is the part of an electric vehicle’s purchase cost you do not recover when you sell it. It can outweigh savings on energy and routine maintenance, but there is no universal rule that EVs always lose value faster or cost more to own than comparable gasoline cars. The result depends on the vehicle, market, purchase price, ownership period, and resale value.
How depreciation enters the cost of owning an EV
A practical way to estimate ownership cost over a chosen period is to add the purchase and financing costs to expenses such as energy, maintenance, insurance, taxes, and fees, then subtract applicable incentives and the money recovered at resale. Depreciation is the gap between what you paid for the vehicle and what you receive when you sell it; it is not a separate bill, but it is a real cost.
Published total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) analyses do not necessarily count the same items. The International Energy Agency’s 2026 five-year comparison includes capital, financing, maintenance, and fuel costs, but excludes financial support and subsidies. Its annual driving assumptions range from 6,500 km to 17,500 km, depending on the country. Those choices matter: a result based on a different mileage, period, or set of included costs may not be directly comparable.
Lower energy or routine maintenance costs can offset some depreciation, but they do not establish that a vehicle is cheaper overall. For a fair comparison, use vehicles in a similar class, the same ownership period and mileage, and explicit assumptions for purchase price, financing, resale, energy, maintenance, insurance, incentives, taxes, and fees. The IEA describes depreciation as a major TCO factor in its 2024 discussion of electric-car trends; that report’s description of faster EV depreciation applied to the period it analyzed, not to every EV and market today.

How much value do EVs retain?
Historical market averages can show direction, but they are not a quote for a particular car. The IEA’s 2026 analysis reports different retention patterns by region and period:
| Market and period | Reported resale-value retention | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| China, 2024 | About 46% for three-year-old electric cars; around 55% for the broader used-car market. | Three-year-old cars in that market and year, not a model-specific forecast. |
| China, late 2025 | 42% average for BEVs and PHEVs; just above 50% for the broader used-car market. | The IEA says the percentage-point decline was similar across the electric and broader markets. |
| Five European markets, 2022 to 2025 | BEV retention fell from about 50% to 35%; overall market retention fell from around 60% to 50%. | A regional trend across five markets, not every European country or model. |
| United States, end of 2025 | BEV resale values were about 25 percentage points below the overall used-car market. | The IEA identifies the 2025 U.S. values as estimates because data are limited. |
These year-end retention rates come from the IEA’s 2026 Global EV Outlook. The report cautions that its chart cannot correct for the average age of vehicles sold. A market-level percentage also cannot account for an individual car’s trim, condition, mileage, warranty, local demand, or selling price.

Why EV resale values change
Age, mileage, and model appeal
Like other used cars, an EV’s value is affected by age and mileage, along with condition and how desirable that particular model is to buyers. A broad powertrain average cannot substitute for a realistic estimate for the vehicle and local market you are considering.
New-car prices and newer technology
When manufacturers reduce new-car prices, a used vehicle may look less attractive at its previous price. New models with more range or newer battery technology can also change buyer expectations. These shifts can pressure resale values, although their effect varies by vehicle and market.

Battery confidence and repair concerns
Some used-car buyers weigh uncertainty about battery health and the possibility of major repairs. The IEA cites battery-health and major-repair concerns as factors in China’s electric-car retention gap. That does not mean a particular EV needs a battery replacement, or that such a repair is inevitable; it means buyer confidence can influence demand and pricing.
Local supply, demand, and policy
Used-car supply and buyer demand differ by place and time. Incentives or other policies that change the effective price of new or used vehicles can also affect what buyers will pay for an older car. A national or international trend may therefore be a poor guide to the resale market where you live.

How to make a useful ownership-cost comparison
- Set the same comparison period and vehicle class. Compare vehicles that serve a similar purpose over the same number of years and driving distance.
- Use the actual acquisition costs. Include the purchase price and financing, and account for incentives, taxes, and fees that apply to your situation.
- Estimate resale for the specific vehicle and market. Consider age, mileage, model appeal, warranty, condition, and local demand. Treat market-wide retention figures as context, not a guaranteed outcome.
- Include operating costs and identify assumptions. Compare energy, maintenance, and insurance on a consistent basis. Check what any TCO source includes; analyses may differ in their treatment of subsidies and other costs.
- Test more than one resale scenario. Calculate the comparison using a higher and a lower plausible resale estimate. If the result changes substantially, resale uncertainty is an important part of the decision rather than a detail to hide in one assumed number.
Does a used EV cost less to own than a new car?
It can, but a used-EV comparison is not the same as comparing a new EV with a new gasoline vehicle. A used EV’s lower purchase price may reduce the amount exposed to future depreciation, while its age, remaining warranty, condition, mileage, and likely resale value affect the rest of the calculation. Compare it with a vehicle serving the same role over a clearly defined period, and use the used car’s actual price rather than a new-car average.
A University of Michigan Center for Sustainable Systems study published in 2026 analyzed 260,000 U.S. vehicle listings collected from January through December 2024. In its specified comparison, buying a three-year-old BEV midsize SUV instead of a new midsize SUV was associated with about $13,000 in estimated seven-year TCO savings. The study found different results for other powertrains; its estimate is limited to that analysis and is not a general prediction for used EVs. The study’s description and findings should be read with its vehicle, market, and period assumptions in mind.
