A weaker local currency usually makes a foreign-priced car, and imported parts used in a locally assembled car, more expensive in local-currency terms. The increase is not automatic or one-for-one at the dealership. Carmakers and dealers can absorb part of the higher cost, change the models they offer, delay price changes, or respond to buyers trading down. For a vehicle you import yourself, the exchange rate also changes the customs value of foreign-currency costs, while the final duty and tax bill depends on the destination country’s valuation rules, conversion rate, and required date.
What exchange rate actually matters?
There is no single global “dollar effect.” The relevant movement is between your currency and the currency in which the vehicle or its components are priced or invoiced. A buyer in one country may see an imported model become more expensive against the euro but not against the yen if those currencies move differently. Start by identifying the invoice currency, then compare it with the currency in which you earn and pay.

- Direct import: the purchase price, freight, insurance, and other foreign-currency charges are converted into your local currency.
- Locally assembled vehicle: the sticker price may be in local currency, but imported engines, electronics, steel, software, or other components can become more expensive when the local currency weakens.
- Partly hedged manufacturer: a company with forward contracts or other hedges may delay or reduce the immediate effect, although hedges expire and do not remove long-term exposure.
The timing can differ at each stage. An importer may lock a contract price months before a shipment arrives, while a dealer changes its retail price after inventory is replenished. A currency move therefore matters, but the date on which you observe it is not necessarily the date used for your purchase or customs calculation.

Will a weaker currency make imported cars more expensive?
Usually, yes in local-currency terms, if the car is priced in the foreign currency that strengthened against your currency. Suppose a vehicle costs 30,000 units of a foreign currency. At an exchange rate of 1.20 local units per foreign unit, the price converts to 36,000 local units. At 1.40, the same invoice converts to 42,000 local units, before shipping, duty, taxes, or dealer costs. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a quotation for any particular vehicle.

A stronger local currency has the opposite mechanical effect. However, the retail price may not fall as quickly as the currency rises because companies may be recovering earlier losses, carrying higher local operating costs, or waiting for old inventory to sell. The exchange-rate calculation is therefore the starting point, not a guaranteed showroom outcome.
Why retail prices do not move one-for-one
Manufacturers and dealers can absorb part of the shock
Businesses may accept a lower margin to protect market share, especially in a competitive segment. They can also renegotiate with suppliers, reduce discounts, or spread a cost increase across several models. A foreign-exchange loss on one component does not necessarily appear as the same percentage increase on the final sticker price.
Model mix can change
If a currency shock makes large imported vehicles difficult to price competitively, a manufacturer may emphasize smaller or less expensive models. The average transaction price can then move differently from the price of an unchanged model. Comparing a year’s average price without checking which models were sold can hide this effect.

Higher prices can shift buyers toward cheaper trims, used vehicles, or vehicles with fewer imported features. Lower demand for expensive models limits how much of the cost firms can pass through. Conversely, a supply shortage or strong demand can allow a larger and faster increase.
Evidence from Colombia’s 2014–2015 depreciation
In an article published on 14 April 2025, Banco de la República reviewed Colombian new-car prices during a period when the peso moved from about COP 1,900 to COP 3,000 per US dollar. Its underlying model accounted for tariffs, vehicle attributes, exchange rates, and both supply and demand. The article reports that firms absorbed some increased costs to compete, offered lower prices for existing models, and introduced cheaper models; consumers also shifted toward cheaper cars. It concludes that the estimated average car-price increase was smaller than the increase in costs.

The European Central Bank’s May 2017 Working Paper 2059, “Does marketing widen borders? Cross-country price dispersion in the European car market,” finds incomplete and slow pass-through in its European analysis. Over a two-year horizon, its reported estimate is that a depreciation of the local currency produces a price increase for imported cars of about 10% of the depreciation amount. In the paper’s analysis, short-run local-currency prices remain fixed. This is a historical estimate for that sample and model, not a current global forecast.
How currency enters a direct-import cost calculation
Calculate the landed cost in layers. Each layer is controlled by the destination country’s law, so do not substitute another country’s rate or formula.
- Contract or purchase price: record the amount, invoice currency, payment dates, and whether the contract fixes an exchange rate. A contractually fixed rate can make the buyer’s price differ from the market rate on the shipping or declaration date.
- Customs value: find the local valuation method and the costs that must be added. The invoice alone may not be the customs value.
- Customs conversion: convert every foreign-currency component using the official rate and date required by the customs authority.
- Duty and taxes: apply the vehicle’s tariff classification, duty rate, and tax base. A tax may be calculated after duty is added, creating a compounding effect.
- Other landed costs: add only costs required in that jurisdiction, such as shipping, insurance, handling, storage, compliance work, and registration. Their amounts and treatment are not universal.

Keep each currency, exchange-rate date, receipt, and contract term in the worksheet. A small difference in the customs base can affect both duty and a tax charged on top of duty.

Singapore example: CIF and qualifying additions
For a new vehicle, Singapore Customs’ motor-vehicle guidance describes a transaction-value method that starts with the CIF value and includes qualifying sale and delivery costs. Its examples of additions include commissions, assists, packing, royalties or licence fees, freight, insurance, and certain proceeds from a later resale. The exact inclusion depends on the rule and the facts of the transaction.
Singapore Customs states: “If any component is in a foreign currency, convert it to Singapore Dollars using the prevailing weekly average MAS exchange rates at the time duty/GST is paid.” That instruction is specific to Singapore’s motor-vehicle valuation process; it is not a universal rule for every country.
Why freight and insurance matter
When freight or marine insurance is denominated in the same foreign currency as the car, a weaker local currency raises those converted amounts too. If the destination requires them in the customs value, the exchange-rate effect reaches the tax base rather than stopping at the vehicle invoice.

These examples show why a bank’s spot rate, the rate on your card statement, and the customs rate can all differ. Ask the customs authority or your broker which rate controls before estimating duty.

Singapore duty and GST illustration
Singapore Customs’ motor-vehicle GST page gives an illustrative example in which a 20% duty on a S$100,000 customs value produces S$20,000 of duty. The page then describes GST for the original-importer scenario as being assessed on customs value plus duties. The S$20,000 is an example, not a general duty rate for all vehicles or destinations, and the Singapore tax treatment should not be copied into another country’s calculation.
The compounding point is important: if currency conversion increases the customs value, a duty calculated on that value rises; if GST is then calculated on customs value plus duty, the higher duty also increases the GST base. You need the destination’s current tax rules and the vehicle’s classification to compute the actual amount.
Locally assembled cars and imported components
A vehicle assembled in your country can still have substantial foreign-exchange exposure. Engine and transmission assemblies, battery cells, semiconductors, sensors, infotainment systems, specialized steel, and software licences may be invoiced in another currency. The effect depends on the share of imported content, supplier contracts, hedging, inventory already in the country, and how quickly the manufacturer resets prices.
Do not infer the effect from the assembly location alone. Two locally assembled models can have very different imported-content shares and therefore different sensitivity to the same currency movement. A model with mostly local parts may face a smaller direct shock but still experience higher prices if imported fuel, machinery, or replacement parts become more expensive.

An offer that appears cheaper in foreign currency can still have a higher local landed cost if its freight, customs additions, duty classification, or conversion date is less favorable.
Step-by-step checklist for importing a car
- Confirm eligibility: check age, emissions, safety, steering-side, documentation, and any registration restrictions in the destination country before paying a deposit.
- Lock the commercial terms: obtain the invoice currency, delivery terms, payment schedule, cancellation terms, and any fixed exchange-rate clause in writing.
- Build the customs file: collect the invoice, bill of sale, freight and insurance documents, commission details, evidence of royalties or licence fees, and any other valuation additions required locally.
- Identify the official rate: record the authority, date, published rate, and whether a weekly average or declaration-date rate applies.
- Classify the vehicle: verify the tariff code and whether options, accessories, or special equipment change the treatment.
- Calculate duty and tax separately: show the customs value, duty, tax base, and each tax as its own line rather than combining them into one estimate.
- Add post-border costs: include port handling, storage, compliance testing, registration, and local delivery only when required and supported by a quotation or official schedule.
- Set a currency buffer: if the rate is not fixed, model a stronger foreign currency between deposit, shipment, declaration, and final payment. Label the result as a scenario, not a guaranteed cost.
- Have the declaration checked: for a high-value import, use a qualified customs broker or professional familiar with the destination’s vehicle rules, and verify credentials and current program terms.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using a headline exchange rate: a news quote may not be the customs rate. Use the destination authority’s published method.
- Converting only the car price: freight, insurance, commissions, and other qualifying additions may also be foreign-currency costs.
- Assuming duty is a percentage of the invoice: the legal customs value may be larger or defined differently.
- Applying another country’s tax formula: Singapore’s GST-on-customs-value-plus-duty example does not establish the rule in the United Kingdom, the United States, or elsewhere.
- Expecting an immediate retail change: inventory, hedges, competition, model mix, and buyer demand can delay or reduce pass-through.
- Treating a study estimate as a forecast: the ECB’s approximately 10% two-year estimate applies to its European sample and model, not to every current market.
- Ignoring contract language: a fixed conversion rate or delivery term can change who bears a currency move.
How to interpret a dealer price change
Ask whether the change applies to existing inventory or only new orders, whether the vehicle’s invoice currency changed, and whether equipment or trim levels changed. A higher sticker price may reflect a new model mix rather than full pass-through of the exchange rate. A discount may reflect a clearance of inventory purchased at an earlier, more favorable rate rather than a permanent improvement in import economics.
For a direct import, request a dated landed-cost sheet. It should identify the currency and rate for every component, the customs value, duty, tax base, and costs that remain estimates. If any line is “subject to customs,” ask which rule and event will determine it.
Bottom line: currency is the first variable, not the final price
A weaker currency raises the local-currency cost of a foreign-priced car and can raise the cost of imported content in a locally assembled vehicle. The final retail effect can be smaller, slower, or different across models because firms and consumers adjust. For a personal import, the decisive details are the invoice currency, valuation additions, official conversion date and rate, tariff classification, duty, tax base, and other required landed costs. Without the destination country and complete vehicle transaction details, a precise landed-cost promise is not reliable.
