How Cold and Hot Weather Affect EV Range in City Driving

Cold weather usually cuts EV city range much more than heat. Here is what 20°F and 95°F tests show, why short trips suffer, and how to plan, charge and preserve range.

Cold weather usually cuts an electric vehicle’s city range far more than hot weather. In AAA’s 2026 tests, EV range was 39.0% lower at 20°F than at 75°F, while 95°F caused an 8.5% loss. The gap is largest on short urban trips because heating the battery and cabin can consume a substantial share of the energy before the car has traveled far.

What temperature does to an EV in city traffic

An EV’s displayed or rated range assumes particular test conditions. Ambient temperature changes how much electricity the vehicle needs for the battery, cabin and other systems, while city driving adds frequent stops and short trips that magnify those auxiliary loads.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

At low temperatures, the battery may need to be warmed before it can accept energy efficiently or deliver full power. The cabin also needs heat, usually from a resistive heater or a heat-pump system. At high temperatures, the air conditioner cools the cabin and the vehicle may run battery-cooling equipment. Those loads reduce the electricity available for propulsion.

The effect is not a fixed percentage for every EV. Battery chemistry, thermal-management hardware, insulation, tire pressure, wind, precipitation, speed, state of charge and trip length all change the result. Published figures are useful planning anchors, not guarantees for a particular model.

How much city range can you lose?

Condition and source Reported result How to interpret it
20°F versus 75°F, AAA 2026 39.0% calculated EV-range decrease Three EVs were tested at 20°F, 75°F and 95°F with HVAC set to 72°F. This is a small sample, so it is not a universal model-specific prediction.
95°F versus 75°F, AAA 2026 8.5% EV-range loss The same three-EV test found a much smaller average hot-weather penalty than cold-weather penalty.
20°F with heat operating, AAA 2019 41% average range decrease AAA described the result as 59 miles available for every 100 miles of baseline combined urban/highway range.
20°F HVAC demand, U.S. Department of Energy 2024 38% lower total HVAC power draw with the analyzed heat-pump configuration This compares one vehicle configuration with resistance heating; it is not a guarantee for every heat-pump EV.
50°F to 88°F, Geotab 2025 At least 100% of rated range on average The analysis covered 5.2 million trips by 4,200 EVs. Performance declined outside this band as thermal-management demand increased.

These percentages use different methods and conditions. AAA’s figures come from controlled tests, the DOE figure concerns HVAC power rather than total range, and Geotab’s result is a large connected-vehicle fleet analysis. Do not combine them into a single formula or assume that a 39% winter loss and an 8.5% summer loss will occur on every city trip.

Why cold city trips are especially demanding

Battery warm-up

A cold battery has higher internal resistance and reduced available power. The vehicle can use energy to bring the cells into a more favorable operating range. If the trip is only a few miles, that warm-up energy represents a large fraction of the journey’s total consumption.

Cabin heating

Heating a cabin from below-freezing conditions requires substantially more energy than maintaining a comfortable temperature after the interior is already warm. A resistive heater converts electricity directly to heat. A heat pump can move heat and therefore use less electrical power in suitable conditions, although its performance depends on the vehicle design and outside temperature.

Short trips and repeated stops

Urban drivers often make several short departures rather than one long trip. Each cold start can require another period of battery and cabin conditioning. Stop-and-go traffic itself is not always inefficient for an EV because regenerative braking can recover some energy, but that benefit does not cancel the fixed energy used for heating and preparation.

Snow, rain, wind and tires

Cold-weather range is also affected by conditions that often accompany winter. Snow or standing water increases rolling resistance, wind increases aerodynamic drag, and cold air can lower tire pressure. A tire that is underinflated relative to the pressure on the vehicle placard requires more energy to roll.

What happens in hot weather?

At 95°F, AAA’s 2026 test measured an 8.5% EV-range loss compared with 75°F, with HVAC set to 72°F. The added loads identified by AAA were cabin air-conditioning and battery cooling. Those systems can run before or during a trip, particularly when the car has been parked in direct sun or when the battery is under heavy charging or driving loads.

Hot weather can still matter on long or repeated city journeys. A vehicle that begins the day cool may use less energy than one that sits in the sun and must remove a large amount of heat. High humidity, intense sunlight and frequent fast charging can increase thermal-management work, but the available AAA test does not establish one universal percentage for each of those combinations.

Why the EPA range label does not predict every season

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency measures EV city range by repeatedly running a standardized city cycle on a dynamometer until the battery is depleted. EPA’s methodology gives the combined label a 55% city and 45% highway weighting, includes a 20°F cold HVAC test and a 95°F hot HVAC test, and applies adjustment factors before calculating the final label value.

That process makes labels comparable, but a single number cannot represent every climate, HVAC setting, trip length or traffic pattern. A driver making two-mile errands in 20°F weather can see a different result from a driver completing a warmed-up 40-mile urban commute at the same temperature. Treat the label as a standardized reference, then adjust your planning for the forecast and your driving pattern.

How to estimate your own winter city range

  1. Start with the usable baseline. Use the range your car normally achieves at moderate temperatures, not only the official label. Your own recent trips between roughly 50°F and 88°F provide the most relevant comparison if they used similar speeds and routes.
  2. Apply a planning margin for severe cold. AAA’s 39.0% decrease at 20°F versus 75°F and its earlier 41% result with heat operating show why a 20°F day deserves a substantial buffer. These are anchors for planning, not a promise that your vehicle will lose exactly that amount.
  3. Account for trip length. Short errands can perform worse than a continuous trip because conditioning energy is spread over fewer miles. If your route includes several stops, plan more conservatively than for one uninterrupted journey.
  4. Check the forecast and road surface. Snow, rain, strong wind and low tire pressure can reduce efficiency beyond the temperature effect alone.
  5. Confirm charging before leaving. In winter, identify a reachable charger with an alternative option rather than planning to arrive with only a few miles indicated.

For example, if your moderate-weather city range is 250 miles, a 39% reduction would correspond to about 153 miles under the AAA 2026 test comparison. That arithmetic is a planning illustration, not a prediction for your model; conditions and vehicle design can move the result in either direction.

Does a heat pump improve winter range?

A heat pump can reduce the electricity required for cabin heating compared with resistance heating. The U.S. Department of Energy reported 38% lower total HVAC power draw at 20°F for the analyzed heat-pump configuration. Because the result is configuration-specific, it should be used to compare documented vehicle systems rather than treated as a universal 38% range improvement.

A heat pump does not eliminate cold-weather losses. The battery still has to operate in the cold, windows may need defrosting, and the vehicle may use supplemental resistance heat in conditions where the pump cannot provide enough warmth. When comparing EVs, look for the manufacturer’s description of the heat-pump system, battery heater and thermal-management strategy, and consider independent results that specify test temperature and HVAC settings.

Practical ways to preserve range in city driving

Precondition while plugged in

Use the vehicle’s scheduled departure or climate-control function while the car is connected to a charger. Warming or cooling the cabin before unplugging shifts that energy to the grid instead of the traction battery. If the vehicle offers battery preconditioning, use the documented setting and timing for your model.

Use targeted comfort features

Seat heaters and a heated steering wheel can provide personal warmth without heating the entire cabin as aggressively. Keep the windshield clear and safe first; do not disable defrosting when visibility requires it. In mild cold, a lower cabin set point combined with local heating may reduce energy use.

Maintain tire pressure

Check pressure with a gauge when the tires are cold and follow the pressure printed on the vehicle placard, not the maximum molded into the tire sidewall. Pressure falls as temperature drops, so a reading taken on a warm tire or in a heated garage may not represent the pressure outside.

Drive smoothly and moderate speed

Gentle acceleration, early lifting and sensible regenerative-braking settings help limit avoidable losses in traffic. Although this article focuses on city driving, Geotab reports that speed can outweigh heat effects on some trips, especially at higher speeds. Keeping urban speeds moderate is therefore useful in extreme weather as well as on the highway.

Reduce unnecessary thermal load

Park in shade during hot weather when possible, use a sunshade, and avoid leaving the cabin at an unnecessarily low or high set point. In cold weather, remove heavy snow and ice before departure so the vehicle does not carry extra mass or operate with restricted airflow.

Charging and trip planning in extreme temperatures

Cold weather can affect both the energy needed to reach a charger and the rate at which the battery can accept power. Plan to arrive with a reserve rather than relying on the final few miles of the estimate. If the vehicle supports navigation-based battery preconditioning, entering the charger as a destination may help it prepare the pack; follow the instructions for your model.

AAA advises planning for reduced winter range and evaluating charging access and prices before a trip. Have a second charging location when weather, traffic or a remote route could make the first option unreachable. Avoid unnecessary fast charging in extreme conditions when a slower, more suitable option is available, while still following the vehicle maker’s guidance and your travel needs.

Vehicle and trip factors to compare

Factor Why it matters in city driving What to record
Ambient temperature Changes battery resistance and HVAC demand. Outside temperature at departure and arrival.
HVAC setting Heating, cooling and defrosting draw energy. Set point, fan use and whether heat or air conditioning ran continuously.
Heat pump or resistance heater Thermal hardware changes cabin-heating power. Equipment fitted to the exact vehicle and any supplemental heater use.
Battery thermal management Heating or cooling the pack can consume energy and affect charging. Whether battery conditioning was active and why.
Trip length and stops Short, repeated trips spread conditioning energy over fewer miles. Total miles, number of stops and time parked between trips.
Speed and traffic Higher speed raises aerodynamic drag; congestion changes travel time and HVAC duration. Average speed, traffic delays and route type.
Tire pressure Low pressure increases rolling resistance and is common when temperatures fall. Cold pressure compared with the vehicle placard.
State of charge Available power and charging behavior can vary with battery state and temperature. Starting and ending percentages.
Wind and precipitation Wet or snowy surfaces and headwinds increase resistance. Rain, snow, standing water and wind direction.
Charging availability A reduced-range day requires reachable backup energy. Charger location, access hours and expected price or queue.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using the dashboard estimate as a guarantee: The estimate reflects recent conditions and assumptions. Recalculate your plan when the temperature, route or HVAC use changes.
  • Applying one study’s percentage to every EV: Keep the test temperature, vehicle sample and HVAC setting attached to the number. AAA tested three EVs; Geotab analyzed thousands of vehicles and trips, so their figures answer different questions.
  • Comparing a warmed-up commute with cold errands: Record trip length and the time between departures. Conditioning dominates a short trip more than a long, already-warm drive.
  • Ignoring tires after a temperature drop: Measure cold pressure and correct it to the placard value.
  • Assuming a heat pump removes all winter loss: It can lower HVAC demand in the documented configuration, but battery warming, defrosting and severe cold still require energy.
  • Leaving without a charging fallback: Build a reserve and identify an alternate charger before entering an area with limited infrastructure.

Bottom line for city drivers

Plan for the largest range penalty in cold weather, especially around 20°F, on short trips with cabin heat running. AAA’s 2026 result of a 39.0% decrease and its 2019 average of 41% show the scale that severe cold can reach in testing. Hot weather is usually less damaging on average—8.5% at 95°F in the 2026 AAA test—but air-conditioning and battery cooling still matter. Precondition while plugged in, use efficient comfort settings, maintain tire pressure, moderate speed and arrange charging with a reserve. Use every published percentage with its stated temperature, HVAC condition and test method rather than as a promise for your specific EV.
