The Chetak was derived from Vespa’s Sprint, yet it became a Bajaj-branded scooter in its own right—one whose demand eventually outlasted the long wait for delivery.
From licensed Vespa to Bajaj Chetak
Bajaj Auto says it launched the Vespa 150 in India under licence from Piaggio in 1960. That was the licensed Vespa chapter; the later Chetak was not simply the same scooter sold under the Vespa name. Autocar India describes the Chetak as derived from the Vespa Sprint and links the relationship to Bajaj’s technical alliance with Vespa.
In 1972, Bajaj launched the Chetak and named it after Chetak, the horse associated with Maharana Pratap, according to the company’s official history. The name gave the scooter a distinct Bajaj identity even as its origins remained connected to Vespa engineering.
Why the Chetak became a household name
The Chetak’s story was not only about its lineage. Bajaj’s official history says demand grew so much that by 1980 the waiting period exceeded ten years. Autocar India reports that it was available off the shelf by 1990, marking a striking change from scarcity to easier availability.

Rahul Bajaj, then chairman of Bajaj Auto, was quoted by Autocar India as saying, “A 10-year delivery period is not a joke,” and identifying “Quality, cost and availability (market reach)” as key factors in the Chetak’s success. The sequence helps explain both its popularity and the importance of wider access: a vehicle could be highly sought after, but reaching more buyers mattered too.
Bajaj’s company history dates its “Hamara Bajaj” national campaign to 1989, during the period when the Chetak had become a familiar part of Indian life. The slogan is part of the company’s branding history; it should not be mistaken for a technical milestone in the scooter’s development.

Sales milestone, production halt and electric return
Bajaj’s official Chetak history records ten million scooters sold by 1995. It dates the end of original Chetak production to 2005. That is the company’s stated year; accounts that describe the phase-out differently do not align precisely on the date.
The name returned with a different kind of scooter. Bajaj’s company timeline dates the electric Chetak launch to 2019. Its Chetak history page also describes 2014 as the start of an electric future, but the timeline distinguishes that earlier milestone from the electric model’s 2019 launch. In 2019, the company says, a Chetak Yatra covered 70,000 km.

The company dates its 35 Series launch to 2024. That revival carried the Chetak name into a new era; it does not make the modern electric scooter the same product as the original petrol-powered Chetak.
