From Indifferent to Energized: How a Test Drive at Electrify Expo Sparked a Desire to Go Electric

An EV test drive can turn an abstract idea into a firsthand impression—but a short demo is only one step in deciding whether electric driving fits your life.

A test drive can make an electric car feel less like an idea and more like a car you can imagine using. But to tell that story honestly, the change of heart has to come from the driver’s actual experience—not from assumptions about what any EV feels like or what a brief drive proves.

What changed during the drive

The important part of a test-drive story is the moment that made electric driving feel newly relevant: a sound, sensation, control, or practical detail that the driver noticed for themselves. Without a confirmed account of the vehicle, the route, and that moment, it would be misleading to invent a personal turning point or claim a particular car sparked one.

That distinction matters for anyone asking, “What is it actually like to drive an electric car?” A drive can offer a direct first impression of one vehicle in one setting. It cannot, on its own, establish how every EV behaves or whether electric ownership fits a driver’s budget, charging access, or routine.

What a test drive can—and cannot—tell you

A short demo is a useful way to experience a vehicle firsthand. It is not a complete ownership test. If you are wondering, “How do I know if an EV is right for me?”, notice what you can assess during the drive, then identify what you still need to learn in your own circumstances.

  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
  • During the drive: Pay attention to the vehicle’s controls, visibility, comfort, and how it feels on the route provided.
  • Beyond the drive: Consider your regular trips, where you could charge, and whether the vehicle suits the tasks you actually do. A brief event demo does not answer those questions by itself.

A longer trial can add useful context. Electrify Expo’s Weekender page describes participating attendees trying an EV at home for one or more nights, including for errands, commuting, or a short trip. The page currently lists examples involving the Volvo EX90 overnight and XC60 Plug In and XC90 Plug In for one to two days; availability, eligibility, and terms vary by manufacturer. The program requires a valid driver’s license and auto insurance. Check the current Weekender details before relying on those examples.

Planning a visit to Electrify Expo

Electrify Expo’s attendee guidance describes an outdoor event with over 1,000,000 square feet of event space. The organizer recommends allowing at least two hours, arriving early, and planning around exhibitor schedules. Some EV drives require signing up at the exhibitor booth for an appointment; others are first come, first served. Demos begin winding down around 4 p.m. and end at 5 p.m., according to the event’s guidance. Check the attendee page for current details.

For current naming, Electrify Expo became Demo Days Festival in March 2026. The organization said the same team, format, mission, partnerships, and operations continued under the new name. The name used for a particular visit depends on when it took place; the event’s March 16, 2026 announcement explains the change.

Can a test drive change your mind about going electric?

It can make the question more concrete, but a personal change of mind is individual—not something the event’s official information establishes for every attendee. Demo Days Festival describes its events as hands-on electric-mobility showcases spanning EVs, micromobility, solar, charging solutions, powersports, automotive aftermarket, and connected-home technology. That is the organizer’s description of the event’s scope, not evidence that attendance causes people to adopt EVs. Its founder and CEO, BJ Birtwell, said in the March 2026 name-change announcement: “The Demo Days Festival name captures the spirit of our events: immersive, test-drive-first experiences that empower consumers to make confident decisions about clean mobility.”
