A short first drive can explain how a new model feels in an initial setting; it cannot support the same ownership conclusions as a longer loan. Performance, braking, range and charging figures are meaningful only when readers can see how they were measured and under what conditions. There is no single universal test protocol: methods differ by publication and assignment.
What a car review can—and cannot—tell you
A review is not necessarily an instrumented test. A writer may describe steering response, ride comfort, visibility, cabin usability or the enjoyment of driving without producing laboratory-style measurements. Those observations can be valuable, but they are judgments based on experience, not readings from a data logger. Conversely, a measured acceleration time or stopping distance answers a narrow question about a particular car in a particular test; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the car is comfortable, easy to live with or right for your needs.

Strong coverage makes the distinction clear. It identifies what the reviewer experienced, what the publication measured, how the test was conducted and which comparisons or buyer needs inform the verdict. MotorTrend describes both instrumented data and test-driver observations. Road & Track says it draws on Hearst Autos resources when in-depth performance measurements are needed, while its editorial approach centers driving pleasure. These are examples of named publications’ practices, not a rule that every review must include the same equipment or measurements.

The setting matters as much as the method. A highway drive can reveal how a vehicle behaves at cruising speed; a proving ground can support repeatable acceleration or braking tests; a race track can help evaluate a performance car at its limits; sand can expose aspects of an off-road pickup’s capability. No single route answers every question about a car.

How access and test duration shape a review
The time a journalist spends with a vehicle sets a practical limit on what the review can claim. Road & Track describes early first-drive reviews at manufacturer-organized press events, sometimes involving a day or two of driving and sometimes held abroad. That format can provide an informed initial impression, but it offers less time to assess everyday use than an extended loan.
For longer evaluation stories, Road & Track says staff loans commonly last one to two weeks. That gives an editor more opportunity to use the car across different journeys and examine details that can be missed during a short event. It still represents a limited evaluation period, not long-term ownership experience. The one-to-two-week duration is Road & Track’s stated practice, not an industry-wide standard.
Comparison projects can demand substantially more coordination. Road & Track says its annual performance-car and performance-EV comparisons can involve weeks of planning, rented facilities and a dozen or more editors sharing observations. A multi-editor comparison can broaden the range of driver impressions, but readers should still look for the specific test conditions and criteria rather than assuming that group size alone makes a result definitive.

When an article leaves the access format or duration unclear, treat its conclusions accordingly. A short first drive may be useful for understanding a new model’s character, but it provides less basis for claims about a sustained routine than a longer evaluation. Neither format automatically guarantees a better review; the important question is whether the scope of the conclusion matches the experience described.
What instrumented testing measures
MotorTrend says it runs instrumented tests on hundreds of new cars, SUVs and trucks each year. The publication’s process illustrates how a test team can prepare a vehicle, collect repeatable measurements and combine those figures with a driver’s observations. The procedures below are MotorTrend’s stated methods, not a universal specification followed by every automotive outlet.

Vehicle check-in and preparation
MotorTrend describes recording the vehicle identification number (VIN), odometer reading, tire information and other details at check-in. Staff torque the lug nuts, set tire pressure according to vehicle information, fill the vehicle with recommended fuel and record its weight. Hybrids and electric vehicles are tested with full batteries. These checks establish a record of the tested vehicle and help make the starting conditions more consistent.
Configuration also matters. Launch control, drive modes and traction-control settings can affect acceleration results. MotorTrend says it uses launch control when available on modern performance cars, while for mainstream models it tries combinations of drive modes, traction-control settings and launch techniques. A figure without that context may conceal why two runs—or two publications’ results—differ.
Acceleration and atmospheric correction
Acceleration testing records how quickly a vehicle gains speed under the chosen procedure. For gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, MotorTrend says it applies the correction in SAE J1349 to account for atmospheric conditions. That adjustment is intended to help compare results gathered in different locations and weather; it does not remove the need to know which vehicle and test configuration produced a result.
EVs and hybrids introduce their own starting-condition questions, including battery state and preparation. MotorTrend’s check-in process tests them with full batteries. When comparing published figures, look for enough procedural detail to understand whether the results began from comparable conditions and whether the publication used the same kind of measurement.
Braking distance and driver observations
MotorTrend describes a braking test that accelerates the vehicle to 63 mph, then measures the distance as it slows through 60 mph until it stops. It reports the best of five 60-to-zero runs and, for performance vehicles, three 100-to-zero stops. These are not interchangeable figures: a result from the best run of a repeated test is different from an average across runs, and a 100-to-zero stop answers a different question from a 60-to-zero stop.

The measurement is only part of the evaluation. Drivers also note whether the vehicle tracks straight, how much it dives under braking, how the pedal feels and whether the brakes fade. Such observations help explain how the braking system behaves to a driver, while the stopping distance supplies a numerical result under the stated test procedure.
Handling on a figure-eight course
MotorTrend’s figure-eight test combines acceleration, braking and cornering. The course uses two circles, each 200 feet in diameter, with their centers 500 feet apart. The publication reports lap time, average g and lateral acceleration. Those figures describe performance on a defined course; they do not turn the course into a complete simulation of every road or driver.
Drivers add observations about steering, body motion, pedal modulation and transmission behavior. A car’s numerical result can show how it performed on the course, while the observations can help explain its character and how its controls respond. Neither should be passed off as the other: a subjective description is not a sensor reading, and a lap time cannot capture every quality a driver may care about.
How EV range and charging tests work
Official range ratings and a publication’s road test can differ because they describe results from different procedures. MotorTrend launched its own range and fast-charging tests in 2021. Its published comparison gives readers a specific basis for understanding its results: the Road-Trip Range test is a highway procedure at a constant 70 mph, not a claim about every EV, every route or every independent test.
MotorTrend’s Road-Trip Range procedure
The test begins with a full battery and ends when 5 percent remains. The car is driven on public highways using out-and-back loops to reduce the effects of elevation changes and wind. MotorTrend preconditions the battery and cabin and specifies which accessories may be used. The timing aims for conditions near 75°F where possible, although the procedure allows temperatures from 45°F to 105°F.

In 2025, MotorTrend reported that its 70-mph road-trip results averaged about 15 percent below EPA combined range. That figure describes MotorTrend’s comparison between its own highway test and EPA ratings. The publication also reported exceptions: some vehicles differed by more than 30 percent, and some exceeded their official figure. A reader should not apply the average to a particular car without checking that vehicle’s result or treat it as a general forecast for all real-world driving.
Fast-charging procedure
MotorTrend’s fast-charge test uses a DC fast charger capable of supplying the vehicle’s full power. The battery is preconditioned, and the charge session runs from 5 percent to 100 percent. The team records the energy added and estimates recovered miles using the vehicle’s measured efficiency at 70 mph. Results are reported at 15-, 30-, 45- and 60-minute intervals.
That method is more informative than comparing a single peak-power figure: it shows how much energy was added over time and translates it into estimated highway miles using a stated efficiency basis. The estimate remains tied to the tested vehicle, its measured efficiency and the procedure described; it is not a guarantee of the range a driver will recover during every charging stop.

For routine testing, MotorTrend says its Racelogic VBox Touch data loggers record 25 times per second using GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou satellite systems. MotorTrend reports speed accuracy of 0.06 mph and distance accuracy of 2.6 feet per mile for these devices. For tests requiring higher resolution or additional sensors, it uses a Racelogic VBox 3i, which records 100 times per second. These figures describe equipment identified by MotorTrend in 2025, not the accuracy of every instrument used in automotive journalism.

This helps explain why a published test figure may not match a dashboard display or a trip-computer reading. A specialist data logger is not something ordinary readers need to buy to evaluate a review; the relevant point is whether the publication explains its method and uses equipment suited to the measurement.

Repeatability depends on controlling and reporting conditions, not merely owning a precise device. A surface, route, temperature, tire pressure, vehicle configuration, battery state or charging setup can affect the result. If a result is a best run, a reader should know that; if it is an average or a standardized procedure, that should be stated too. The more a test result is meant to support a comparison, the more useful it is to see these details beside the number.
How to compare cars fairly
A useful comparison starts with vehicles that compete for the same buyer. Top Gear says it assesses cars against rivals in their market segment and considers buyer suitability in real-world conditions. Its guide describes testing a researched cross-section that includes budget, mid-range and luxury options. The practical lesson is to compare vehicles on the grounds that matter to the intended buyer, rather than treating one ranking as universal.
For measured comparisons, check whether the numbers come from comparable methods and conditions. For driving impressions, identify the use case behind the judgment. Ride comfort, engagement, usability and off-road capability are different attributes; a car that excels in one may not be the best choice for someone prioritizing another.

Editorial independence and disclosures
Editorial policies vary by outlet. Top Gear says its reviews follow BBC Editorial Guidelines and that advertising is distinct from editorial content; it also says it will not promote a product within a review as part of an advertisement or other commercial arrangement. That is Top Gear’s stated policy, not evidence that every publication follows the same rules.
Readers can assess a review’s transparency by looking for information about vehicle access, test duration, geography and route, and whether figures are measured or manufacturer-claimed. A clear explanation of commercial relationships also helps readers understand the context of a recommendation. If an article does not disclose these details, avoid assuming a particular policy or test procedure that it has not stated.
A practical way to read a car review
- Identify the format. See whether the story describes a first drive, a longer loan, a comparison or an instrumented test. Treat the scope of its conclusions in light of that format.
- Separate facts from impressions. Note which statements are measured results and which are the reviewer’s assessment of feel, comfort or usability.
- Check the test conditions. For a performance number, look for the procedure, vehicle configuration and whether the result is a best run or an average. For EV range and charging, look for speed, battery preparation, starting and ending charge levels, temperature and the basis for any estimated miles.
- Match the verdict to your priorities. Consider the needs the review weighs—such as driving pleasure, daily usability or off-road capability—and whether those are the same priorities you have.
- Use comparable evidence across rivals. A ranking is more useful when the vehicles belong to the same relevant segment and the review makes its basis for comparison visible.
A credible review does not need to claim that one procedure settles every question. It should show readers what the writer experienced, what the publication measured and how far that evidence supports the conclusion.
