The main U.S. professional series are Monster Energy AMA Supercross, raced on purpose-built stadium tracks, and AMA Pro Motocross, raced outdoors on natural terrain. Each crowns its own champion. SuperMotocross (SMX) combines results from both regular seasons for a separate postseason title. Internationally, the FIM Motocross World Championship—MXGP and MX2—is a distinct outdoor championship. The FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) is another, separate series; its organizer ended its 2026 season early, with its longer-term future unresolved as of October 7, 2026.
The main championships at a glance
“Motocross” and “supercross” describe related forms of off-road motorcycle racing, but the championship names are not interchangeable. The central distinction is where the racing happens: AMA Supercross is staged on temporary courses built inside stadiums, while AMA Pro Motocross and the FIM’s MXGP championship race outdoors on natural-terrain tracks.

The U.S. professional calendar has two separate regular-season titles: Monster Energy AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross. SuperMotocross, usually shortened to SMX, links their results to a postseason championship without replacing either title. Outside that U.S. structure, MXGP/MX2 is the FIM’s international outdoor motocross championship. WSX is a separate global supercross series, but its announced 2026 season ended early.

That comparison is a useful starting point, but it does not make every year identical. Event totals, classes, playoff rules and schedules are season-specific. When a number or rule matters, check the official information for that season rather than assuming last year’s format carries over.

What makes Supercross different from outdoor motocross?
AMA Supercross: stadium courses
Monster Energy AMA Supercross is the U.S. professional stadium series. Its tracks are constructed for events inside stadiums, rather than being permanent natural-terrain courses. The SuperMotocross organization describes the racing as requiring technical precision, consistency and athleticism on purpose-built, man-made tracks. The confined stadium setting and deliberately constructed course are the defining differences from outdoor motocross; the names do not simply refer to different levels of the same championship.
The AMA Supercross FAQ describes a typical season as 17 rounds, running from January through early May. Treat that as a typical-season description, not a guarantee for every calendar. The standard classes are 450 and 250. In Supercross, the 250 championship is split into East and West regional titles, rather than presented as one undivided 250 season title. The AMA’s September 29, 2026 announcement of the 2027 class champions reflects those labels, while the precise class and schedule details should still be checked against the relevant season’s information.
AMA Pro Motocross: outdoor natural terrain
AMA Pro Motocross is the separate U.S. outdoor national championship. It races on permanent tracks shaped by natural terrain, rather than temporary stadium courses. The surface and setting make it a different series from Supercross, with a different calendar and a separate season champion.

It is therefore inaccurate to use “Supercross” as a catch-all for U.S. professional motocross, or to treat Pro Motocross as simply another name for the outdoor part of Supercross. They are two championships. Their results later connect through SMX, but each regular season retains its own identity and title.
How SuperMotocross connects the U.S. seasons
SMX is a postseason championship built from the Supercross and Pro Motocross regular seasons. It adds a combined championship pathway; it does not cancel or merge away the two regular-season titles. The official SMX FAQ says that Supercross and Pro Motocross continue to crown individual champions, with points scored independently within each championship. Alongside those separate standings, the combined series structure leads into the SMX postseason.
For the 2026 season, the official SMX description listed 17 Supercross rounds and 11 Pro Motocross rounds in the regular season, followed by three playoff/final events. The 2026 SMX final was scheduled for September 26 in Ridgedale, Missouri. These are figures for 2026, not permanent annual totals or a promise about a later season.

Why the distinction matters
- There are three titles to keep separate. Supercross crowns its own regular-season champion; Pro Motocross crowns its own; SMX adds a postseason championship.
- A combined standings path is not a replacement title. Riders can be competing for the identity and standings of the individual series as well as the SMX outcome.
- SMX qualification details can change. The SMX FAQ and current 2026 event information differ in some qualification details. The FAQ describes a 22-rider field and earlier qualification language, while the current event page gives the 2026 structure. For an exact eligibility or points question, use the rulebook dated for the season in question; do not combine language from different seasons into one set of rules.
This is the simplest way to understand the relationship: Supercross and Pro Motocross are independent U.S. regular seasons whose results also feed the SMX postseason. A 2026 event total or qualification procedure should not be treated as a standing rule for 2027 or beyond.

Where MXGP/MX2 fits
The FIM Motocross World Championship is an international outdoor motocross series, not another label for AMA Pro Motocross or SMX. Its principal classes are MXGP and MX2. The wider FIM motocross program also includes the Women’s Motocross World Championship (WMX), junior championships and the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. Those competitions belong to the broader program but are not all the same championship or class.
For 2026, Infront Moto Racing confirmed a revised calendar of 19 Grands Prix. That is the revised 2026 calendar figure, not a fixed number for every year. The MXGP/MX2 championship is the relevant international series for a reader asking about top-level FIM outdoor motocross; it is separate in sanctioning and structure from the U.S. AMA national championship.
What happened to the FIM World Supercross Championship?
WSX was a separate global supercross championship sanctioned by the FIM and promoted by SX Global. It was not the AMA’s domestic Supercross season, despite sharing the stadium-supercross format.
There is conflicting timing in the organizer’s information: its series page still contains an earlier description of a 2026 season, but a later announcement dated October 7, 2026 says the 2026 season would conclude “with immediate effect.” That same announcement says discussions with potential investors about the future of the series were continuing. The dated announcement is the controlling status update for the 2026 season. It establishes that the season ended early, not that WSX can never return.

How to identify the right series for a race, title or schedule
- Start with the setting. A purpose-built track inside a stadium points to Supercross. An outdoor natural-terrain course points to motocross, such as AMA Pro Motocross or MXGP.
- Check the organizer and sanctioning context. AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross are U.S. professional championships. MXGP/MX2 is the FIM international outdoor championship. WSX is a distinct global supercross series.
- Check whether the question is about a regular-season title or SMX. The Supercross and Pro Motocross titles are separate. SMX is the postseason championship that connects their regular-season results.
- Use a season-dated source for counts and rules. Calendars, event totals, classes, qualification procedures and viewing arrangements can change. Confirm the relevant year before relying on a round count or rule.
These checks prevent common mix-ups: calling every U.S. series “Supercross,” assuming SMX eliminates the two regular-season champions, or describing MXGP as a round of AMA Pro Motocross. The names identify different competitions, even where their audiences and sport overlap.

Season details are not permanent rules
Several official descriptions are useful for orientation but need a season label. The AMA Supercross FAQ’s 17-round January-to-early-May description is typical rather than a guarantee. SMX’s 17 Supercross rounds, 11 Pro Motocross rounds, three postseason events and September 26 final describe 2026. MXGP’s 19-Grands-Prix count describes its revised 2026 calendar. Those figures should not be carried forward as facts about a later schedule without confirmation.
Likewise, a page that continues to display an earlier event format may not reflect a later change. WSX’s earlier 2026 season description was superseded by its October 7 announcement that the season ended immediately. For exact SMX qualification rules, a season-specific rulebook is more reliable than combining details in an FAQ with a current event page when they differ.
Watching or playing: what to know
Viewing rights are also tied to a season and territory. For the 2026 SMX playoffs and final, official SMX event information named Peacock for U.S. streaming and SMX Video Pass for international coverage. Those events have concluded, so those services should be understood as the 2026 arrangements, not as a guarantee of where a later season will be shown. Check current official event information for the next schedule and regional viewing options.

What do 450, 250, East and West mean?

Class labels and formats can vary by season; check that season’s official schedule and rules rather than assuming every class detail is permanent.
