A research wheel uses adjustable wire-spoke tension to switch between a stiff, round shape for flat ground and a more flexible shape that can conform around obstacles. Researchers demonstrated it on a two-wheeled wheelchair system; it is a prototype, not an established consumer wheelchair product.
How the shape-shifting wheel works
The design takes inspiration from a liquid droplet, which tends toward a rounded shape as surface tension pulls its surface inward. The wheel does not contain liquid or use water surface tension. Instead, it recreates the analogy with a perimeter of linked blocks and adjustable wire spokes.
The blocks form the wheel’s outer chain. Spokes connect that perimeter to opposite sides of the central hub. Adjusting the gap at the hub changes the spoke geometry and tension, which in turn changes the wheel’s stiffness and shape. The authors describe the mechanism in their 2024 *Science Robotics* paper.
What changes between the two operating states
| Operating state | Spoke tension and wheel behavior | Intended terrain |
|---|---|---|
| Stiffer, rounder | Higher tension pulls the perimeter toward a circular shape and makes the wheel behave more rigidly. | Flat ground, where the paper says the state favors faster locomotion. |
| More deformable | Lower tension reduces the wheel’s modulus, allowing the perimeter to deform around an obstacle. | Uneven ground or obstacles whose shape the wheel can accommodate. |
The design’s central idea is to vary compliance rather than choose one fixed compromise between a rigid wheel and a highly deformable one. The published study frames the contrast as two operating conditions, not as a comparison with commercial wheel models.

What the researchers demonstrated
The authors applied the wheel to a two-wheeled wheelchair system weighing 120 kilograms and reported real-time switching between the two states during outdoor driving. That figure is the stated mass of the system, not a payload capacity or a rating for the wheel. The primary research record is indexed at PubMed.
New Atlas’s report and demonstration footage show the wheel crossing a large rock and moving on grass. These are visual demonstrations: the reviewed sources do not quantify the rock’s dimensions or provide a controlled performance comparison.

What is not established yet
The published record and reporting cited here do not establish an obstacle-height limit, travel speed, energy consumption, durability result, or success rate. They also do not establish safety certification, superiority over standard wheels, or availability for purchase. The result is best understood as a research demonstration of variable stiffness, not evidence that the design is ready for use on consumer wheelchairs.
The formal paper, “Variable-stiffness-morphing wheel inspired by the surface tension of a liquid droplet,” was published in *Science Robotics* on August 14, 2024 (DOI: 10.1126/scirobotics.adl2067; article identifier eadl2067). Its contribution is a wheel whose stiffness can be changed in operation; how well that approach performs across everyday conditions remains unquantified in the sources cited here.
