A Hobson’s coupler is a rotary linkage for joining shafts whose axes meet at a right angle. In a 3D-printed demonstration, its sliding links carry rotation around that corner—and a related arrangement becomes an unusual “elbow engine.” The featured build needs more than printed parts: it also uses bearings and steel rods.
How does a Hobson’s coupler work?
Also called a Hobson’s joint or stirrup joint, the mechanism connects two perpendicular shafts. Each rotating member has evenly spaced holes, and four bent links slide through those holes. When the input turns, the links travel around the corner: their ends slide while the links push the output member around.
That sliding action is the key distinction from a simple rigid connection. The shafts remain at a fixed right angle, while the bent links accommodate the movement needed to transfer rotation between them. A Karakurist mechanism reference describes the arrangement and its four sliding pieces.
What does the 3D-printed build need?
The linked model is a 3D-printed hookup, but the assembly is not wholly printed. As Hackaday author Al Williams put it, “The part isn’t all 3D printed, though. You do need some bearings and steel rods.”

How does the joint lead to an elbow engine?
Hackaday’s second video is described as an elbow engine: a demonstration in which changing the mechanism produces a distinctive engine-like motion. The article also notes that changes to the setup can create a Cardan joint. That related universal-joint arrangement should not be mistaken for the Hobson’s coupler itself; the two mechanisms are distinct.

Where might a Hobson’s coupler be useful?
Hackaday proposes connecting windmill blades to a generator with the joint. That is a suggested application, not a reported installation or field test. The article says bevel-gear trains are commonly used for fixed right-angle shaft transmission. This is a practical comparison, not a measured demonstration that one design always performs better.
