At the 2019 Race Of Champions in Mexico City, Italian sim racer Enzo Bonito beat Lucas di Grassi in a Nations Cup heat. Di Grassi was a Formula E champion and former Formula 1 driver, not an active F1 entrant at the event. Bonito’s win was a notable real-track result, not proof that video-game training alone makes someone a racing champion.
Who was the sim racer, and whom did he beat?
Enzo Bonito was a competitive sim racer who won the 2018 eROC championship. He also joined McLaren’s Shadow Project for the 2018 F1 Esports Pro Series. At the 2019 Race Of Champions, Bonito defeated Lucas di Grassi in a Nations Cup showdown. Di Grassi had competed in Formula 1 and become a Formula E champion; he was not racing as an active F1 driver at this event. Race Of Champions and Formula 1 reporting describe the event and competitors.

What happened at the 2019 Race Of Champions?
The event took place January 19–20 at Foro Sol, inside Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. It included a Nations Cup competition and an individual Race Of Champions tournament. Sim racers competed alongside established motorsport drivers as Team Sim Racing All Stars.
Bonito’s win over di Grassi came in the Nations Cup. Bonito also beat Ryan Hunter-Reay in the individual competition, but he did not reach the final or win the individual title. Benito Guerra won that event. So Bonito beat accomplished drivers in separate heats, but he did not win the Race Of Champions overall.

Does this prove that video-game training transfers to real racing?
No single event can establish that. The result shows that a skilled sim racer could compete successfully in this mixed-discipline motorsport event and defeat an accomplished driver in a heat. It does not isolate why Bonito won, measure how often simulator skill transfers to real-world competition, or show that virtual practice replaces track experience and coaching.
Sim racing commonly uses a physical steering wheel and pedals rather than mouse-and-keyboard controls. However, the event reporting does not establish which game, wheel, pedals, training hours, or preparation Bonito used. It would be inaccurate to attribute his result to a particular game or setup.
