Drive onto it at driveway level, lower it into the space beneath, then drive off into the underground garage. When the platform is raised, it can sit flush with the surrounding surface; it is a major construction project, not a portable workshop lift.
How does a disappearing driveway lift work?
The lift moves a vehicle platform between driveway level and an underground parking bay. In the driveway-to-basement arrangement described by Vortex Garage Systems, the driver positions the car on the platform, lowers it, and then drives into the garage below. Hydraulic or scissor mechanisms appear in the supplier examples, but the design varies by product.
“Disappearing” describes the platform’s appearance when retracted, not a compact mechanism vanishing into an ordinary driveway. Some systems are designed so the upper surface sits flush with the surrounding floor. HASY says its platforms can be finished with materials such as stone or granite tile, wood decking, lawn, or concrete. That does not mean every finish is suitable for every vehicle load, climate, or site; the project’s engineered design must establish what works.
What kinds of home parking lifts are there?
These configurations address related parking needs but differ in how they use space and whether they require an underground pit.

| Configuration | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway-to-basement car elevator | A vehicle enters at driveway level; the platform descends to an underground garage. Vortex describes custom vehicle elevators for this arrangement. | Requires a below-grade destination and project-specific coordination for the platform, travel distance, and structure. |
| Underground pit lift or stacker | A platform lowers a vehicle into a pit. Depending on the system, a surface platform may sit flush when raised. | Check pit depth, access to each parking position, and whether one vehicle blocks another. Models and capacities vary by supplier. |
| Above-ground parking stacker | A lift raises one vehicle above another in the same parking bay. | Can add parking capacity without an underground pit, but the equipment and raised vehicle remain visible; it is not a disappearing driveway lift. |
HASY describes both subterranean systems and above-ground two- and four-post options. Its published figures are product-specific: Parklift 461/462 models are listed at 2,500–3,000 kg per tier, and its hydraulic scissor pit lift at 3,000–3,500 kg. NELCA lists up to 3,000 kg per platform for The Vault. These vendor specifications are not general design limits or evidence that a particular model suits a given car or site.
Why is this a building project, not a garage gadget?
The lift needs a pit and a structure designed around its dimensions, vehicle, travel, and destination. Vortex describes bespoke platform sizes and travel distances, vehicle-specific loading, technical drawings, engineered installation, and commissioning. NELCA says The Vault should be accounted for early in the home’s structural planning and describes coordination over pit preparation and structural requirements.

- SAFE LIFTING PERFORMANCE: This vehicle lift supports up to 7000 lbs (3200 kg) with dual safety locking pins and built-in mechanical safety locks for stable, secure lifting
- STABLE DESIGN: Built with high-strength Q355B steel, offering greater strength than Q235B steel, this garage car lift includes a 7.1" extension plate for up to 70.7" overall length, providing added stability and support during lifting
- ADJUSTABLE LIFTING HEIGHT: This automotive lift features 4 lifting columns with 17.7"–25.4" whole-body adjustment. Combined with 4 rubber pads, it achieves up to 20" total lift height, providing ample clearance for underbody maintenance and inspections
- EASY TO MOVE: This automotive lift is designed for convenient handling. Each lifting unit weighs approximately 120 lbs(54kg), allowing easier transport and positioning. The black design adds a clean, modern look, while it folds compactly and includes wall-mount handles for space-saving storage
- OPERATING TIPS: For safe use, always operate the car lift on a flat, solid surface—slopes over 4° are unsafe. Ensure the vehicle is properly positioned and secured before lifting. Use hydraulic oil No.46 of the specified grade
Before choosing a product, work through the site and vehicle requirements with the supplier and qualified project professionals:
- Vehicle and platform: Establish vehicle dimensions and weight, platform dimensions, and usable clearance.
- Lower parking level: Determine pit depth and lift travel, then plan how the vehicle enters and exits at both levels.
- Structure and construction: Coordinate the lift with the architect, structural engineer, builder, and equipment supplier.
- Water and surface: Plan drainage and water management for the below-grade space, along with the finish above the platform.
- Operation and upkeep: Ask about controls, access, maintenance, commissioning, and service arrangements.
- Local approvals: Ask the relevant local authority and qualified professionals what approvals and requirements apply to the specific location and project.
There is no single permit or code rule established for every driveway lift. Requirements depend on the jurisdiction, product, and building design; a supplier’s description is not a substitute for local approval or project-specific engineering.

- Powerful Load Capacity for Versatile Vehicles: The vehicle lift can hold up to 7000 lbs (3200 kg), multiple locking levers for safe operation, and an upgraded spring design for faster height recovery. Car lift requires a minimum load (around 220lbs) to descend
- Max Height of 28" with Flexible Adjustments: The auto lift is equipped with 4 height increments (75*75*100 mm), 4 adjustable height increments (170-260 mm) and 2 extension panels for a maximum lifting height of 28 inches, providing ample space to easy access underneath the vehicle for maintenance and inspections
- Durable Q235B Steel Frame, Built to Last: Constructed from Q235B high-strength steel, the car lift offers solid support across various vehicle types. The frame’s anti-corrosion coating ensures reliable long-term use in both home and professional settings
- Foldable & Mobile Design for Easy Storage: Equipped with 4 wheels, scissor lift car allows you to use the lift anywhere, and the Folding design saves space when not in use
- Operating Tips: We recommend that you always use the garage lift on a flat surface, any slope over 4° is unsafe, use hydraulic oil No.46 of the specified grade
What safety features and specifications should you verify?
Ask for the proposed system’s engineering documents and the exact manufacturer documentation for its model. Confirm that the specified vehicle, platform, pit, controls, and site conditions match the design. Also ask who is responsible for installation and commissioning, and what maintenance and service the supplier provides.
HASY lists features including mechanical locks, hydraulic protection, obstacle detection, pit drainage, and water sensors for its products. NELCA states that The Vault uses CSA electrical components and a CWB-certified structure. These are vendor claims about their own offerings; they should not be treated as universal features or independently verified performance guarantees.

A general two-post lift manual from JMC Automotive Equipment says that the specified lift must be installed on a level concrete floor, not asphalt or another surface. That instruction applies to that two-post model, not to a concealed driveway elevator. Do not use portable-lift guidance to determine the foundation or installation requirements for an underground system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much does one cost?
The supplier pages describe custom or project-specific systems, but the available information does not establish an independently substantiated installed price range. The cost for a particular home depends on a site-specific proposal; request a current quote that clarifies equipment, construction coordination, installation, and commissioning rather than relying on a generic figure.

Is this the same as using a car lift on a driveway?
No. A disappearing driveway lift is integrated with a below-grade parking space and is designed as part of a building project. The question “Can you use a car lift on a driveway?” usually refers to placing a conventional portable or workshop lift on a driveway. That is a different product and use case. Do not assume that advice or installation instructions for one applies to the other.
