The car does not choose every gear for you.
How does a manual car work without a clutch pedal?
In the India-market iMT configurations described in the manufacturers’ materials, the driver moves a conventional gear lever to select a gear. An actuator operates the clutch during the gear change, replacing the driver’s pedal operation. Hyundai’s cited i20 manual describes six synchronized forward gears, but that specification applies to that configuration, not every iMT vehicle.
The clutch is still a friction clutch in the transmission system. “Clutch-less” describes the missing pedal and automated clutch operation; it does not mean the car has no clutch or that gear selection is automatic. The manufacturers’ cited material establishes the electronic actuator/control concept, but does not publish a complete sensor list, algorithm, or actuator schematic.
What does iMT do—and what does the driver do?

These descriptions are system-specific: the name iMT is used across different vehicles and markets, and equipment varies by model and year. Do not assume every pedal-free iMT has the coasting function described for Kia’s European 48V version.

How Kia’s 48V iMT coasting feature works
Kia’s 2020 European announcement calls its implementation “clutch-by-wire”: an electronic signal replaces the mechanical link between driver and transmission. In the specific system described, when the vehicle coasts in gear, the iMT communicates with the gearbox and 48V mild-hybrid starter generator (MHSG) to switch off the engine and open the clutch. With the clutch open, the car coasts without the engine running.
Pressing the accelerator, changing gear, or dropping below a speed threshold prompts an engine restart. Kia says the MHSG helps bring the engine and transmission up to speed. This is a feature of the described 48V configuration, not a general description of all iMT cars.

Does iMT save fuel or reduce emissions?
Kia reported around 3% lower real-world CO₂ emissions for its European iMT paired with a 48V mild-hybrid starter generator in 2020. That is a manufacturer-reported result for that configuration, not an independently verified comparison or a universal iMT figure. The available material does not establish independent comparative results for fuel economy, clutch life, reliability, or maintenance savings. Treat convenience, efficiency, and clutch-life benefits promoted by Kia India as manufacturer claims.
Can an iMT clutch overheat on hills?
Yes. Hyundai’s 2025 i20/i20 N Line owner’s manual warns that inappropriate low-speed use or hill driving can overheat or damage the clutch. Its examples include starting uphill in second gear, holding the vehicle on a hill with the accelerator, and repeated sudden acceleration or hill starts.

For those Hyundai models, the manual advises following vehicle-display instructions, selecting a lower gear or stopping when appropriate, using first gear and the parking brake for hill starts, and avoiding gear choices unsuitable for the vehicle’s speed. These are model-specific directions; use the owner’s manual and warnings for your own vehicle.
Does iMT need special fluid or maintenance?
Some systems require inspection of the iMT actuator-fluid level. Hyundai’s cited 2025 i20/i20 N Line manual says to use only the specified fluid and to seek professional inspection if the level is below minimum or frequent top-ups are needed. Kia’s Clavis maintenance page says to inspect iMT actuator fluid according to the maintenance schedule.

Fluid type and service interval are vehicle-specific. Check the exact owner’s manual or ask an authorized service provider before buying fluid; the available guidance does not establish that generic transmission fluid is suitable.

Not in the basic operating distinction established by the cited manufacturer material. In the pedal-free iMT configurations described here, the driver still selects each gear with a manual lever while the system operates the clutch. Kia separately describes its DCT as automatically shifting for fully automatic convenience. Because transmission labels and features vary by vehicle and market, check the specific model’s manual to confirm how it shifts.
