Honda announced its Ye (烨, pronounced yè) electric-vehicle series for China on April 16, 2024, unveiling the Ye P7 and Ye S7 as its first models. The company later presented two GT models as the series’ second set in April 2025. Honda’s announcements place the lineup in China’s competitive EV market, but do not say the series was created specifically to match BYD.
What Honda announced
At an event in Beijing on April 16, 2024, Honda introduced the Ye Series as a new EV series exclusive to the Chinese market. The first model set was the Ye P7 and Ye S7; Honda also premiered the Ye GT Concept, calling it a concept for the second set of models. Honda said it planned six Ye models in China by 2027. Honda’s 2024 announcement said the P7 and S7 were scheduled to go on sale at the end of that year. That was a stated timetable, not confirmation that the vehicles launched on schedule.
How the Ye P7 and Ye S7 differ
Honda presented the P7 as the more sophisticated, smart-looking SUV and the S7 as the more emotional, expressive one. The company announced both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations for the models.

Honda said the rear-drive version was designed for sporty, crisp handling, while the all-wheel-drive version was intended to deliver high power and responsive handling. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent road-test findings. Honda said the vehicles use a dedicated EV platform developed in China; its China-language announcement refers to the platform as its “W” architecture and lists three brand values: “更好开” (better to drive), “更有趣” (more interesting), and “更有范” (more stylish). The English release calls it a dedicated EV platform developed in China.

What happened to the Ye GT Concept
The Ye GT Concept shown in 2024 was a low-and-wide grand tourer concept with a driver-focused cockpit and a far-focus display for the front passenger. On April 23, 2025, at Auto Shanghai, Honda presented the GAC Honda GT and Dongfeng Honda GT as the Ye Series’ second set of models. Honda highlighted their distinct styling while retaining the low-and-wide silhouette and passenger display concept. Honda’s 2025 presentation describes the GT pair and the series as China-exclusive.
Honda’s retrospective identifies Yoshinori Hirose as GT Large Project Leader in the Product Strategy Division at the Automobile R&D Center of Honda Motor Technology (China) Co., Ltd. Hirose said the GT was designed to offer an “extraordinary mobility experience,” with an immersive “Joy of Driving” space for the driver and a comfortable hospitality space for the passenger. Those are Honda’s stated design aims, not independent assessments of the cars. Honda’s retrospective includes his comments.

How the Ye Series fits Honda’s China plans
The six-model Ye target was part of a broader Honda plan announced in April 2024: ten Honda-brand EV models in China by 2027, with EVs intended to account for 100% of Honda automobile sales in China by 2035. These are company targets, not achieved results. Honda’s announcement sets out both goals.
The market context is a fast-electrifying Chinese auto market. In a 2025 retrospective, Honda reported 22,608,000 domestic automobile sales in China during 2024, excluding exports and commercial vehicles, attributing that total to a January 2025 announcement by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Honda also said NEVs exceeded 40% of China sales in 2024, citing its own 2024 survey. In that context, Honda’s NEV category includes battery EVs, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles, so the figure is not a battery-EV-only share. Honda’s retrospective provides the figures and their attributions.

Is Honda trying to match BYD?
The reviewed Honda announcements do not say the Ye Series was intended to match BYD, nor do they provide a numerical Honda-versus-BYD comparison. BYD is relevant as competitive context for China’s EV market, but the evidence supports describing the Ye Series as Honda’s China-focused EV program—not as a specifically declared response to BYD.
