The company announced an approximately CAD$15 billion investment in Ontario in April 2024—often described as about US$11 billion—but postponed the plan in May 2025 and later reported an indefinite suspension after reassessing its electrification strategy in March 2026.
What happened to Honda’s Canadian EV plan?
| Date | Status | What Honda said |
|---|---|---|
| April 25, 2024 | Announced | Honda proposed an approximately CAD$15 billion EV value chain in Ontario, including joint-venture partner investment, with production expected to begin in 2028. |
| May 13, 2025 | Postponed | Honda delayed the project by approximately two years, citing slower EV demand. It said it would announce a specific resumption date after finalizing one. |
| March 2026 strategy reassessment; reported in Honda’s FY2026 Form 20-F | Suspended indefinitely | Honda said the Canadian project was suspended indefinitely as it reassessed its automobile electrification strategy and shifted North American resources toward strengthening hybrid models. |
Honda’s filing describes an indefinite suspension, not a permanent cancellation. The company has not established a new restart date in the cited notices. Honda’s announcement and postponement notice; Honda FY2026 Form 20-F.
What Honda proposed to build in Ontario
The 2024 proposal was a linked supply chain, not a single assembly plant. Honda said it was evaluating an EV assembly plant and a standalone battery plant in Alliston, Ontario, alongside facilities proposed with two partners:
- EV assembly and batteries: Honda was evaluating an EV plant and a separate EV battery plant in Alliston.
- Battery materials: A cathode active material and precursor processing plant was proposed with POSCO Future M.
- Battery separators: A separator plant was proposed with Asahi Kasei.
These were announced plans, not operating facilities. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe described the rationale at the time: “We will strengthen our EV supply system and capability with an eye toward a future increase in EV demand in North America.” That statement explains the 2024 announcement; it does not indicate that construction or production is proceeding now. How to understand the investment and capacity figures
Honda’s official figure was approximately CAD$15 billion, including investment by joint-venture partners. The US$11 billion wording in the original headline is a currency-converted description of that Canadian-dollar figure, not an additional investment amount.
| 2024 announced estimate | What it referred to | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately CAD$15 billion | Proposed project investment, including joint-venture partner investment | Announced estimate; not a measure of completed spending |
| 240,000 vehicles per year | Proposed EV assembly plant’s annual capacity once fully operational | Planned capacity, not realized production |
| 36 GWh per year | Proposed battery plant’s annual capacity once fully operational | Planned capacity, not realized output |
| At least 1,000 new associates | Honda’s estimate for jobs at the proposed EV and battery facilities | Estimated jobs, not reported hiring |
Honda also said the plan was intended to secure the then-current 4,200 associates at its two Ontario manufacturing facilities; that figure described the existing workforce in the context of the April 2024 announcement. All project capacity and employment figures above were Honda’s estimates at announcement, not evidence of facilities built or jobs created. Honda’s announcement.

What was announced about Canadian public support?
On April 29, 2024, Canada’s Department of Finance said Honda and its partners were expected to benefit from upwards of $2.5 billion through federal EV Supply Chain and Clean Technology Manufacturing investment tax credits. That was an anticipated tax-credit benefit; the cited remarks do not verify final payments or disbursements. Department of Finance Canada remarks.
