Honda R&D successfully launched and landed an experimental reusable rocket in a 56.6-second test on June 17, 2025. It reached 271.4 meters and touched down within 37 centimeters of its target. This was a short-hop technology demonstration—not an orbital launch, a commercial service, or evidence of a series of flight tests.
What does “VTOL rocket” mean in Honda’s case?
VTOL means vertical takeoff and landing. Honda’s project is an experimental reusable rocket that launched vertically and returned to land vertically; it is not an aircraft. Honda’s separately reported eVTOL aircraft initiative is a different program, with a different purpose and technology focus. Honda Report 2025 discusses the aircraft and rocket initiatives separately.
How did Honda’s rocket test go?
Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co.’s research and development subsidiary, conducted the test at a Honda facility in Taiki Town, Hiroo District, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. Honda described it as its first launch-and-landing test designed to demonstrate flight stability during ascent and descent, as well as landing capability. The company reported these results in its June 17, 2025 announcement:
- Maximum altitude: 271.4 meters.
- Distance from the target touchdown point: within 37 centimeters.
- Flight duration: 56.6 seconds.
- Vehicle dimensions: 6.3 meters long and 85 centimeters in diameter.
- Weight: 900 kilograms dry and 1,312 kilograms wet.
These are figures reported by Honda for this test, not independently established performance figures for a recurring flight program. Honda said it gathered data during both ascent and descent. Honda’s June 17, 2025 announcement describes the test and the vehicle.

What does the result demonstrate—and what does it not?
The flight demonstrated a controlled short launch and landing, and gave Honda data on the vehicle’s ascent and descent. The landing result is a measurement from this test; it does not establish repeatability across multiple flights.
The test did not demonstrate orbital capability or payload delivery, nor did it establish turnaround time, launch economics, flight cadence, or readiness to serve customers. Honda said the work remained in the fundamental research phase and that it had not decided whether to commercialize the technology. Its stated goal was to develop technology that could enable a suborbital launch by 2029. That is a development goal, not a promised launch date or service commitment. Honda’s announcement sets out the goal and research-stage status.

Is Honda’s rocket program already established?
No. Honda called this its first launch-and-landing test. The successful result met the stated objectives of this demonstration, but it is not evidence of several public flight tests or a mature testing record. Honda Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe said, “We are pleased that Honda has made another step forward in our research on reusable rockets with this successful completion of a launch and landing test.” His wording reflects the program’s research-stage status. Honda’s release includes the quote.

Honda has stated a goal of developing technology that could enable a suborbital launch by 2029. A suborbital flight does not mean reaching orbit, and Honda has not announced a commercial launch service or a firm launch date. The June 2025 test alone does not establish whether or when the company will reach that goal.
