There is no reliable, exposure-adjusted dataset here that proves one Honda CR-V generation is the most dependable. A cautious U.S.-market ranking puts the 1997–2001 first generation in a promising but low-confidence tier; the 2002–2006 and 2007–2011 generations in the broad middle; the 2012–2016 generation in a mixed tier; the 2017–2022 generation in a more-caution tier, especially for 2017–2019; and the 2023-onward generation in a provisional tier because it has had less time in service. For a used buyer, the exact model year, powertrain, maintenance history, recall status and condition matter more than the generation label alone.
How to read this reliability ranking
This is a cautious evidence-based tiering, not an official Honda ranking or a statistical reliability league table. The evidence does not provide comparable failure rates adjusted for mileage, vehicles in service, ownership length or age. Complaint totals and recall counts cannot fill that gap: complaints are voluntary reports, not confirmed defects, and raw totals reflect differing exposure and reporting time.
Consumer Reports’ Buying Guide 2026 describes its used-car reliability rating as a comparison with the average problem rate for vehicles of the same model year, based on member reports across up to 20 trouble spots. It gives greater weight to serious categories such as major engine, transmission, cooling and drive-system problems. Its new-car predictions generally draw on recent reliability history for the model, brand and similar models; a redesign may have only one or two years of data. Use reliability ratings, complaint themes, recall history and the condition of the individual CR-V as separate evidence streams. A safety recall is not the same thing as a routine reliability problem, and a campaign count is not a measure of everyday dependability.

The year ranges below are for a U.S.-market overview. Powertrains and configurations can differ in other markets, and important updates can arrive within a generation.

The first-generation placement is especially uncertain: age and survival introduce their own selection effects. A surviving, well-maintained example is not necessarily representative of every CR-V originally sold in those years.

Why 2017–2019 deserve closer research—not a blanket verdict
Recall Explained’s NHTSA-data snapshot, dated 2025-12-22, lists 2,488 complaints for model-year 2017, 2,720 for 2018 and 1,390 for 2019. These are raw counts, not rates adjusted for the number of vehicles in use, miles driven or time at risk. Complaint volume can help a buyer decide what to ask about, but it cannot establish the chance that a particular CR-V will fail. Recall Explained CR-V data
For 2017–2019, the aggregation names engine and forward-collision avoidance among prominent complaint areas; its 2018 list also includes fuel/propulsion. These are owner-report patterns, not proof that every vehicle has a defect. Ask about warning lights, symptoms and repairs, then have the candidate inspected.

Complaint and recall figures: what they do and do not show
The same Recall Explained aggregation reports 19,697 complaints and 189 recall campaigns across CR-V model years 1997–2026 in its 2025 data snapshot. The figures are not timeless totals, nor are they comparable generation failure rates. It also lists 15 recall campaigns for each of model years 2002 and 2010. A campaign count does not establish that either year is less dependable in ordinary use. Recall campaigns address identified safety-related issues and remedies; what matters to a buyer is whether a campaign applies to the specific vehicle and whether the remedy has been completed.

Examples in the aggregation include airbag campaigns spanning older model years, an engine/cooling campaign covering 2015–2016, and a power-window-switch recall that included some 2002–2006 CR-Vs. Applicability is not universal across every vehicle in a model year. Check the VIN rather than assuming a particular car is affected—or cleared.

- Pin down the vehicle. Record its model year, trim, drivetrain and powertrain. Do not assume that every version in a generation has the same equipment or issue history.
- Review records. Ask for maintenance and repair documentation, and look for gaps or repeated repairs related to symptoms you observe.
- Check recall status by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup to check for open recalls on that individual vehicle. Status can change, so verify it close to purchase.
- Inspect and test the car. Check warning indicators, start it cold, and drive it in varied conditions. Arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic, including checks for corrosion, prior damage and signs of poor maintenance.
- Use complaint patterns as questions, not conclusions. An OBD-II reader may reveal diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot certify overall condition or predict long-term reliability. It is secondary to records, a VIN recall check and a mechanic’s inspection.
A vehicle’s maintenance, mileage, corrosion, prior damage and completed recall work can outweigh its generation’s broad reputation. A well-kept CR-V from a less favorable tier can be a better purchase than a neglected example from a more favorable one.
