In April 2022, Honda reportedly asked Prusa’s Printables platform to remove Honda-related 3D models, and Printables removed listings within the reported scope. The episode was a platform takedown—not a court ruling that every Honda-compatible replacement part or user-created file was unlawful. Whether a particular model raises an intellectual-property issue depends on what it depicts, how it is named and used, and any applicable rights or license.
What happened on Printables?
The Drive reported in April 2022 that Honda sought the removal of models with “Honda” in their listings from Printables. Its account described a cutoff covering listings uploaded before March 30, 2022. The report also said related files remained on Thingiverse, Thangs, and other repositories at that time; that was a snapshot from 2022, not confirmation of what is available there now. The Drive’s report
A Prusa3D forum discussion contains user reports about removed files and a statement attributed to Prusa. One passage says the issue would also relate to file naming and that Honda would consider it a trademark or patent violation. That wording appears in the forum discussion; it should not be treated as a direct quote from Honda or as a legal determination. Prusa3D forum discussion
The available reporting does not establish a named count of removed files or affected makers, nor does it provide the complete legal notice or a later court ruling.

Did the takedown mean Honda-compatible parts are illegal?
No such broad conclusion follows from a platform removal. A rights-holder request and a platform’s response are not the same as a court deciding whether a specific file infringes. Legal scholarship discusses the Honda episode among takedown requests involving CAD repositories and vehicle-compatible parts, but it does not resolve the merits of each model. AIPLA legal discussion
Compatibility alone does not answer the question either way. A model that merely describes fit or intended use raises different questions from one that copies protected design features, uses Honda branding, or reproduces a distinctive appearance. The sources about the 2022 action do not settle the status of every possible file or replacement part.

How do branding, licenses, and the part itself matter?
- Honda marks or trade dress: Honda’s counterfeit-products page describes counterfeit goods as involving unauthorized use of genuine logos or imitation of designs that infringe intellectual-property rights, including trademark, design, patent, and utility-model rights. Honda warns generally that counterfeit products may fail to meet genuine quality standards and may cause failures or accidents. This is Honda’s general position on counterfeits, not a safety test of any particular third-party or printed part. Honda’s counterfeit-products information
- Copied design versus compatibility: A file described as compatible is not automatically equivalent to a file copying a protected design. The evidence about the Printables dispute does not identify every affected model or establish the legal status of each one.
- Applicable permission: Honda’s motorcycle 3D-asset agreement covers specified assets sold through the Unity Asset Store. It grants limited rights for specified creative works and restricts redistribution and uses outside the license without prior written consent. Honda states: “Any uses beyond those granted in this license are not permitted without Honda’s prior written consent.” That agreement applies to the assets it covers; it is not a blanket license governing all user-created CAD models or compatible replacement parts. Honda motorcycle 3D-asset agreement
- Platform rules: A repository may remove a listing after a rights-holder complaint under its own moderation process. That platform decision does not, by itself, determine infringement in court.
- Function and safety: A part’s legal status and its engineering suitability are separate questions. Honda’s general counterfeit warning does not establish that a specific 3D-printed part is unsafe—or safe.
Can you 3D-print a replacement part for your Honda?
The 2022 episode does not provide a universal yes-or-no answer. Before relying on a model, consider what it reproduces, whether it uses Honda marks or distinctive styling, whether a relevant license or permission applies, the file host’s rules, and what the part does on the vehicle. A cosmetic noncritical piece and a component whose failure could affect steering, braking, restraint, fuel, or structural integrity present very different practical risks. The sources here do not assess any individual printed part’s legality or performance.
Do not treat a file’s presence on a repository as proof that Honda approved it, that it is legally cleared, or that it is safe to install. For a safety-critical repair, use a properly specified replacement and seek qualified advice rather than relying on an untested print.
