Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe was reported in November 2025 as saying U.S. EV plans had been delayed “maybe five years,” while the company reevaluated its North American electrification strategy. A sub-$30,000 EV was discussed as a possibility—not a confirmed vehicle with a launch date or final price. Honda subsequently canceled three planned North American EVs in March 2026 and shifted its near-term emphasis toward rebuilding its auto business and expanding hybrids.
What the five-year delay claim means
Edmunds reported on November 6, 2025, that Mibe made the “maybe five years” remark after the outlet spoke with him at Honda headquarters in Japan the previous week. The comment described his estimate of how current U.S. administration policies had pushed back Honda’s EV plans; it was not a newly announced schedule for a specific vehicle. Edmunds’ November 2025 report is the source for both the wording and the possible lower-priced EV.
Was Honda still planning a $30,000 EV?
In that November 2025 report, a sub-$30,000 EV was a possibility Honda was considering as it reevaluated its North American plans. Honda had not confirmed a model, specifications, final price, or launch date. The figure should therefore be read as a prospective price aspiration discussed at the time, not a current offer or a promise that a U.S. Honda EV would arrive at that price.
What changed after the 2025 report
March 2026: three North American EVs canceled
On March 12, 2026, Honda announced that it had canceled development and North American market launches for three planned EV models. That decision materially changed the context for the earlier remark: the company’s subsequent announcement did not reaffirm a sub-$30,000 U.S. EV or provide a replacement launch date. Honda’s March 12, 2026 announcement covers the cancellations.

May 2026: a broader rebuild and more hybrids
Honda’s May 2026 business briefing described a broader rebuild of its automobile business and a stronger near-term focus on hybrids. The company said it planned to introduce 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030. That is a company plan, not a guarantee that all 15 models will reach every market.
Honda also said it planned an N-BOX EV for 2028. The N-BOX is part of Japan’s mini-vehicle market; this plan is not evidence of a U.S. $30,000 EV launch. Honda’s May 2026 business briefing describes the hybrid plans and the Japanese mini-EV direction.

|---|---|---|
| May 2024 | EVs and fuel-cell EVs to make up 40% of global auto sales by 2030; EV production capacity to exceed 2 million. | Historical company targets, not current commitments. Honda’s 2024 electrification briefing. |
| May 2025 | Honda expected its 2030 global EV sales ratio to fall below its previously announced 30% target. | A revised outlook citing a changed product launch plan amid a market slowdown; distinct from the 2024 40% EV-and-fuel-cell formulation. Honda’s 2025 business briefing. |
| November 2025 | Mibe’s “maybe five years” estimate and discussion of a possible sub-$30,000 EV. | A reported delay estimate and an unconfirmed possibility, not a product launch announcement. Edmunds’ report. |
| March–May 2026 | Three North American EVs canceled; a rebuild and expanded hybrid plans outlined, alongside a planned 2028 N-BOX EV for Japan. | Later company decisions and plans; the N-BOX announcement does not establish a U.S. low-cost EV. March cancellation announcement; May business briefing. |
What U.S. buyers can conclude
- The “five years” wording comes from a November 2025 report of the CEO’s estimate, not a confirmed timetable for a named U.S. model.
- The under-$30,000 Honda EV was described as a possibility in that report; Honda did not announce its specifications, final price, or launch date.
- Honda’s March 2026 cancellation of three planned North American EVs means the earlier possibility should not be presented as a vehicle still confirmed for sale.
- Honda’s later EV plan cited here is a 2028 N-BOX EV for Japan, while its broader near-term strategy includes more hybrid models.
