Honda Warning Lights: What Each Symbol Means And How To Interpret Their Colors

Honda dashboard lights do not all signal a fault. Learn how color, flashing behavior, combined warnings, and the owner’s manual reveal what to do next.

Honda uses the word indicator for many dashboard symbols. Some report that a feature is operating; others identify a fault that needs immediate attention. The same symbol can also vary by model year, trim, powertrain, and market.

The safest way to interpret a Honda warning light is to combine three things: its color, whether it is steady or flashing, and the message shown in the driver information display. A red oil-pressure light and a red door-open symbol are both urgent, but they require very different actions.

What Honda dashboard light colors mean

Color is a useful first filter, not a complete diagnosis. Honda’s owner’s manuals explain the exact meaning of each symbol for a particular vehicle.

Color Typical meaning What to do
Red Urgent safety, mechanical, or vehicle-status condition Stop or pull over as soon as it is safe when the symbol indicates a critical fault. Check the symbol and accompanying message.
Amber or yellow Fault, limitation, or condition requiring attention Read the manual and arrange inspection promptly. Amber does not automatically mean it is safe to drive indefinitely.
Green A function or driving mode is active Usually no repair is required. Examples include turn signals, exterior lights, ECON mode, and Auto Idle Stop.
Blue Usually an information notice The most common example is the high-beam indicator.
White or gray System availability, status, or operating mode Common on newer Honda driver-assistance systems. Read the symbol and display message together.

Honda does not use a single symbol list for every vehicle. For a U.S. Honda, open Honda Owners → Owner’s Manual & Warranty → Select a Honda Vehicle, choose the model year and model, select Go, and open Manuals. The U.S. site applies to U.S.-market vehicles; Canadian, UK, and other-market manuals may show different symbols.

Why lights appear when you start the Honda

Warning and system indicators normally illuminate briefly when the vehicle is switched on. This is the dashboard’s system check. They should generally go out after the engine or vehicle system starts.

A light that fails to illuminate during the check may indicate a problem with the indicator or its system. A light that stays on, returns while driving, or flashes requires attention according to the manual’s instructions.

Red Honda warning lights: stop-and-check situations

Red oil-pressure warning

The oil-can symbol indicates low engine oil pressure. It is not simply a reminder to schedule an oil change. Continuing to run the engine with low oil pressure can cause severe damage very quickly.

  1. Pull over on level ground as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine.
  2. Wait approximately three minutes.
  3. Check the engine-oil level and add the specified oil if necessary.
  4. Restart the engine and watch the warning light.
  5. If it remains on for more than about 10 seconds, switch off the engine and contact a Honda dealer or qualified repairer.

The conventional oil-can warning applies to combustion engines. Hybrids and EVs can use different powertrain warnings, so use the manual for that specific vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging-system warning

The battery-shaped charging-system light means the vehicle may not be charging the battery correctly. Pull over safely and have the vehicle checked immediately.

If you must stop temporarily in a location where the vehicle could be exposed to danger, Honda warns against switching off the engine unnecessarily: the battery may discharge rapidly and the vehicle may not restart. Turn off unnecessary electrical loads and seek assistance.

Red brake-system warning

A red brake warning can indicate low brake fluid, a brake-system malfunction, or—if it is blinking—a problem with the electric parking brake. It can also appear when the parking brake is engaged, so first check that the parking brake is fully released.

If the brake pedal feels abnormal, sinks unusually far, or has little or no resistance, stop immediately in a safe place. Use downshifting if necessary to help slow the vehicle, and arrange professional assistance rather than continuing to drive.

  • ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.

Pay particular attention when more than one brake light appears:

  • Red brake warning plus ABS: Honda says the electronic brake-force distribution system may not be working. Vehicle stability during sudden braking can be affected, so have the vehicle inspected immediately.
  • Red brake indicator blinking while the amber brake indicator is on: the electric parking brake may not work. Avoid using it and have the vehicle inspected immediately.

High engine-temperature warning

A temperature warning means engine coolant temperature is too high. Stop as soon as safely possible and switch off the engine. If steam is visible, do not open the hood: hot coolant and engine components can cause serious burns. Wait for the engine to cool and arrange assistance if the warning does not clear or the cause is not obvious.

SRS or airbag warning

The SRS symbol indicates a possible fault in the supplemental restraint system. Depending on the Honda, this can involve the airbags, side-curtain airbags, or seat-belt tensioners. It does not necessarily mean only that an airbag has been disabled.

Have the vehicle inspected. A restraint-system fault can prevent safety equipment from operating correctly in a crash. Do not probe wiring or attempt to repair airbag components yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electric power steering warning

The EPS symbol can indicate a fault in the electric power-steering system. On some Honda models, related warnings can also involve the Driver Attention Monitor.

Stop safely and restart the vehicle. If the light remains on, have the vehicle inspected immediately. If the driver information display says “Do not drive,” follow that instruction and contact a dealer or roadside service.

Door, tailgate, or hood-open indicator

A red outline of a vehicle, door, tailgate, or hood means the relevant closure is not fully secured. Stop as soon as it is safe, identify the open panel from the display or symbol, and close it before continuing. Do not keep driving with a door or tailgate partially latched.

Seat-belt reminder

The red seat-belt symbol means a belt needs to be fastened. A heavy bag or other object on a passenger seat can trigger the reminder even when nobody is sitting there. Move the object to the floor or cargo area, or secure it properly, and fasten the required belts.

Amber and yellow Honda warning lights

Check-engine light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp

A steady check-engine light generally indicates a possible emissions-control problem. Avoid high speeds and have the vehicle inspected promptly. A loose fuel cap is one possible cause on some vehicles, but it is not a complete explanation for every check-engine light.

A blinking check-engine light is more urgent: Honda uses it to indicate an engine misfire that could damage the catalytic converter.

  1. Park safely away from flammable materials.
  2. Switch off the engine and wait at least 10 minutes for it to cool.
  3. Restart the vehicle.
  4. If the light flashes again, drive only to the nearest dealer if it is safe to do so, at no more than 31 mph (50 km/h), or arrange a tow.

ABS warning

A continuously illuminated ABS light means there is a problem with the anti-lock braking system. Ordinary braking may still work, but the anti-lock function may not. Drive cautiously, avoid hard braking where possible, and have the vehicle checked.

Do not interpret an ABS light as proof that all braking has failed. However, if it appears with the red brake warning, treat the combination as an immediate inspection issue because electronic brake-force distribution may be affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low-tire-pressure or TPMS light

A steady tire-shaped TPMS light usually means at least one tire is significantly underinflated. Reduce speed, avoid abrupt cornering and hard braking, and stop somewhere safe to inspect the tires.

Inflate each tire to the pressure on the Honda’s driver-side doorjamb label. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended pressure.

If the TPMS light flashes for roughly one minute and then stays on, Honda says the system itself may have a malfunction. A tire-fill-assist fault or a temporary spare tire can also be involved. Have the tires and TPMS inspected and reinstall the regular wheel when appropriate.

Vehicle Stability Assist warning

The VSA symbol can mean that stability control has been switched off or that the system requires inspection. The exact behavior differs among models. If the light remains on unexpectedly, check the driver display and manual before assuming the system is functioning normally.

Electric parking-brake warning

An amber electric parking-brake symbol generally indicates a fault in that system. If it remains illuminated, avoid using the parking brake and follow the model-specific parking instructions. On an automatic Honda, selecting P may be part of the temporary parking procedure, but the manual’s instructions take priority.

Transmission-system warning

A blinking transmission indicator accompanied by a warning message points to a transmission malfunction. The vehicle may not start or may not be safe to continue driving. Have it inspected immediately and use a professional towing service if towing is required.

Fuel, washer-fluid, and service reminders

Low fuel, low washer fluid, and scheduled-service indicators are maintenance or condition notices. They are not normally the same type of emergency as low oil pressure or a brake-system fault. Their availability, shape, and color vary by model, so do not assume every Honda has all three.

Green, blue, white, and gray Honda indicators

Many illuminated Honda symbols are confirmations rather than fault warnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Green turn-signal arrows: the corresponding turn signal or hazard function is operating.
  • Green Lights On indicator: the vehicle’s exterior lights are switched on.
  • Blue high-beam indicator: the high beams are on. Switch them off for approaching traffic.
  • Auto High-Beam indicator: the automatic high-beam function is active or its operating conditions are met, depending on model. This does not always mean the high beams are illuminated at that moment.
  • Green ECON indicator: ECON mode is selected; it is not a fault.
  • Green Auto Idle Stop indicator: the engine-stop function is operating. An amber Auto Idle Stop indicator can instead indicate a fault, while an OFF or Suspend indicator may simply mean the feature is disabled or temporarily unavailable.

Newer Hondas can use white, gray, green, or amber states for cruise control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, and Safety Support. In these systems, the color may distinguish available, active, unavailable, or fault states. Read the symbol alongside the driver information message rather than relying on color alone.

What steady, flashing, and combined lights tell you

Steady versus flashing

A flashing warning is often more urgent than a steady one, but the response depends on the system. A flashing check-engine light indicates a misfire; a flashing TPMS light followed by a steady light can indicate a TPMS fault; a blinking red brake light can indicate an electric parking-brake problem; and a blinking transmission indicator can signal a transmission malfunction.

Do not apply one rule—such as “flashing means stop immediately”—to every Honda symbol. Use the message and the vehicle-specific manual.

Several lights appearing together

Multiple indicators can reflect one underlying fault rather than several unrelated failures. The red brake warning and ABS light appearing together is a significant example. The red and amber brake combination can point to an electric-parking-brake problem.

Record which lights appeared, whether they were steady or flashing, and any text message shown. That information helps a technician diagnose the problem, especially if a light later goes out.

A practical response when a Honda warning light appears

  1. Look at the color and symbol. Identify whether it is a fault indicator or an operating-status indicator.
  2. Check whether it is steady or flashing. Flashing often changes the required response.
  3. Read the driver information display. A text instruction such as “Do not drive” overrides generic advice.
  4. Control the immediate risk. Pull over for oil pressure, overheating, brake abnormalities, charging faults, or a blinking check-engine light.
  5. Check simple conditions only when safe. Close a door, release the parking brake, inspect a tire, or check the oil level as directed by the manual.
  6. Use the correct manual. Select the exact model year, model, trim where available, and market.
  7. Do not erase the warning without finding the cause. Disconnecting the battery or clearing diagnostic codes can remove useful information without fixing the fault.

Common interpretation mistakes

Assumption Why it is unreliable
“Amber means I can keep driving normally.” Amber can indicate a system problem or a safety limitation. The manual may require immediate inspection.
“The check-engine light means the fuel cap is loose.” A steady MIL generally indicates an emissions-control problem; a blinking MIL indicates an engine misfire.
“ABS means the brakes have failed.” Honda distinguishes loss of anti-lock function from loss of ordinary braking, although the vehicle still needs inspection.
“The tire sidewall pressure is the correct inflation pressure.” Use the pressure on the driver-side doorjamb label.
“Every Honda has the same dashboard symbols.” Symbols and meanings vary with model, year, trim, powertrain, and market.

FAQ

Can I drive with an amber Honda warning light on?

Sometimes, but not automatically. Amber can indicate a fault or a safety-system limitation. Read the driver information display and the vehicle-specific owner’s manual. A blinking check-engine light, transmission warning, or other amber warning accompanied by a stop or do-not-drive message requires immediate action.

Why do Honda warning lights come on briefly when I start the car?

The dashboard performs a system check when the vehicle is switched on, so many indicators illuminate briefly. They should normally go out after the engine or vehicle system starts. A light that stays on, returns while driving, or behaves differently from the manual’s description needs attention.

Is it safe to drive with the Honda ABS light on?

A continuously illuminated ABS light generally means the anti-lock function has a fault while ordinary braking may remain available. Drive cautiously and have it checked. If the ABS light appears with the red brake warning, stop safely and arrange immediate inspection because electronic brake-force distribution may be affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the Honda check-engine light is flashing?

A flashing check-engine light indicates an engine misfire. Park away from flammable materials, switch off the engine, and wait at least 10 minutes. If it flashes again after restarting, drive no faster than 31 mph (50 km/h) to the nearest dealer only if safe, or arrange a tow.

The Bottom Line

Use color to establish urgency, then confirm the meaning from the symbol, its steady-or-flashing behavior, and the driver information message. Red oil-pressure, brake, charging, overheating, and serious steering warnings can require stopping immediately. A steady amber light usually calls for prompt diagnosis, while green, blue, white, and gray indicators often describe an active feature rather than a fault.

For the final answer, use the manual for the exact Honda model and year. Generic warning-light charts cannot account for every trim, powertrain, or market.
