Yes—but only in a carefully qualified sense. The 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport has real off-road equipment and independent testing supports its ability on moderate trails. It is a credible light-to-moderate trail crossover, not a Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner, or Land Rover Defender replacement for technical rock crawling.
The 2026 Passport TrailSport has real off-road hardware
Honda is not relying on a badge and some black trim to make the 2026 Passport TrailSport look adventurous. The TrailSport gets 275/60R18 all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, skid plates, and high-visibility recovery hooks. The redesigned Passport also uses Honda’s second-generation i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system with Trail Torque Logic and dedicated Trail and Sand drive modes.
That hardware, combined with independent testing, makes Honda’s capability claim substantially credible. But the word off-roader needs a boundary. The 2026 Passport TrailSport is a capable, comfortable soft-roader for dirt roads, forest roads, sand, gravel, moderate ruts, and recreational trails. It is not a Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner, or Land Rover Defender substitute for technical rock crawling.
What Honda changed for 2026
The 2026 Passport is a full redesign. In U.S.-market specification, every version uses a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 285 horsepower, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. That makes the Passport’s off-road equipment more meaningful than a cosmetic package: the drivetrain, tires, suspension, and underbody protection are all intended to work together.

The second-generation i-VTM4 system can manage torque distribution between the front and rear axles and between the rear wheels. Trail Torque Logic and the integrated drive modes are designed to help the system maintain forward motion when traction becomes inconsistent. The available modes include Normal, Econ, Sport, Snow, Tow, Trail, and Sand.
TrailSport adds the equipment that matters most once the pavement ends:
- 275/60R18 all-terrain tires for additional loose-surface grip and sidewall protection compared with ordinary road tires.
- Off-road-tuned suspension intended to improve compliance over uneven surfaces.
- Skid plates to reduce the consequences of contact with rocks, ruts, and other obstacles.
- High-visibility recovery hooks for situations where the vehicle needs assistance.
- Trail and Sand modes, along with hill-descent control and trail-oriented information displays.
Trail Info can show information such as pitch, roll, elevation, and compass direction. The TrailSport Elite adds second-generation TrailWatch, a camera system that helps the driver see portions of the vehicle’s tire path and nearby obstacles. That is useful on uneven terrain and around blind obstacles, but it cannot create extra clearance or replace underbody protection.
The numbers explain both the capability and the limits
| Specification | 2026 Passport TrailSport | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 3.5-liter V-6 | Provides 285 horsepower for highway travel, towing, and trail work. |
| Transmission | 10-speed automatic | Offers multiple ratios, but not the crawl gearing of a low-range transfer case. |
| All-wheel drive | Standard second-generation i-VTM4 | Every Passport has AWD; TrailSport adds the tires and protection needed to use it more confidently off pavement. |
| Ground clearance | 8.3 inches, unladen | Respectable for a crossover, but limited when ruts, rocks, or ledges become deep or tall. |
| Approach angle | 23 degrees | Helps the front end reach an obstacle before contacting the ground, but does not describe the vehicle’s entire geometry. |
| Maximum towing capacity | 5,000 pounds | Useful for trailers, but towing capacity is not a measure of rock-crawling ability. |
The 8.3-inch clearance figure is unladen, so passengers, cargo, accessories, and tongue weight can reduce the available margin. It is also not an exceptional figure among dedicated off-road vehicles. The Passport can clear obstacles that would stop a conventional family crossover, but it has less room for error than a truck-based 4×4 with more than 11 inches of clearance.

The 23-degree approach angle is helpful, but buyers should not treat it as an all-purpose off-road rating. Ground clearance, breakover and departure geometry, tire placement, suspension travel, and the driver’s line choice all affect whether a vehicle gets through a specific obstacle. Honda’s published approach figure alone does not make the Passport suitable for steep ledges or technical rock gardens.
What independent testing found
The strongest case for the Passport TrailSport comes from the combination of real equipment and evaluations outside a specification sheet.

MotorTrend found the 2026 TrailSport able to travel farther off-road than expected while retaining good road manners. Its conclusion was balanced: the vehicle is capable, but not a hardcore off-roader because it lacks low-range gearing, locking differentials, and a substantial suspension lift. MotorTrend also noted additional tire noise, some body motion, and a V-6-and-transmission combination that is not especially quick.
Autoblog drove a Honda off-road course that included steep ascents and descents, off-camber ridges, puddles, rutted terrain, and situations in which two wheels became unloaded. The evaluation examined the contribution of the hill-descent system, i-VTM4 AWD, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and the Passport’s approach and departure geometry. That shows the hardware has a practical purpose, although a controlled course should not be confused with a long-term durability test on unknown trails.
J.D. Power reported strong traction during testing on steep climbs and descents, loose gravel and dirt, a deep-water crossing, and other off-road surfaces. Its assessment was similarly qualified: the AWD system worked effectively, but the 8.3-inch clearance and lack of a 4WD Low mode limit the vehicle in extreme terrain.
The Drive’s long-term testing adds useful context. The Passport had adequate clearance for the trail being tested and maintained traction through deep ruts and a section where wheels were suspended over rocks. However, the same account reported bottoming and underbody contact on trails commonly used by vehicles with more than 11 inches of clearance. The Passport’s protective equipment prevented damage during that outing, but protection does not eliminate the loss of momentum, clearance, or mechanical margin.
Taken together, these evaluations support a specific conclusion: the TrailSport can use its AWD, tires, suspension, and protection to handle genuine uneven terrain. They do not support claims that it can go anywhere or match a purpose-built 4×4.
Why the lack of low range matters
The most important mechanical limitation is the absence of a 4WD Low range. A low-range transfer case gives a vehicle much lower gearing, allowing it to move slowly with more wheel torque and better control. That is useful when climbing a ledge, descending a steep obstacle, easing over rocks, or pulling through difficult terrain without relying on momentum.

The Passport’s 10-speed automatic, AWD controls, Trail mode, and hill-descent control can improve traction and control, but they do not change the vehicle into a low-range 4×4. The vehicle also lacks locking differentials, which can help maintain drive when one wheel has little or no weight on it. i-VTM4 can manage torque effectively, and testing showed that it works well, but electronic torque management is not the same thing as the maximum articulation and mechanical simplicity available in a dedicated off-road drivetrain.
The Passport’s unibody crossover construction is not automatically a flaw. It contributes to a quieter, roomier, more comfortable daily driver. It does mean that the vehicle is optimized around a different compromise than a body-on-frame trail vehicle designed for repeated high-clearance, high-articulation use.
Where the TrailSport should perform well
| Trail use | Verdict | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gravel roads and maintained dirt roads | Strong fit | The Passport has more than enough capability for ordinary unpaved travel. |
| Forest roads and moderate two-track routes | Good fit | Watch for deep ruts, sharp rocks, and clearance changes under load. |
| Sand and loose surfaces | Reasonable fit | Use the correct drive mode, manage tire pressures appropriately, and avoid burying the vehicle. |
| Moderate mud and uneven recreational trails | Capable with care | All-terrain tires and AWD help, but clearance and recovery planning remain critical. |
| Deep ruts, tall ledges, and repeated rock obstacles | Marginal | Underbody contact can occur before traction becomes the main problem. |
| Technical rock crawling or extreme trails | Poor match | The lack of low range, lockers, major lift, and additional clearance sets a firm limit. |
The key skill in a Passport is line choice. A driver who places each tire carefully and avoids straddling obstacles may get through terrain that looks intimidating. A driver who follows the deepest rut or attacks a ledge with speed can use up the vehicle’s clearance quickly. Off-road hardware increases the margin; it does not remove the need for judgment.
Is it still a good daily driver?
That is where the Passport TrailSport makes its strongest overall case. Independent evaluations describe good road manners, comfort, useful space, and practical everyday usability. The same suspension and tires that help it absorb uneven trails do bring compromises: more tire noise, more body movement, and a powertrain that is competent rather than especially quick.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThose compromises are modest compared with what many owners accept in a specialized off-roader. A Wrangler or similar vehicle may offer more trail hardware and clearance, but the Passport is designed to spend most of its life carrying people and cargo on pavement. Its appeal is that it can leave the road without becoming an unpleasant commuter.
The TrailSport’s 5,000-pound towing rating is also useful for boats, utility trailers, and outdoor equipment. It should be treated as a separate capability from off-roading. A vehicle can tow a substantial trailer on a road while still being poorly suited to a rocky, high-clearance trail.

Which 2026 Passport trim makes sense?
The regular RTL and RTL Blackout trims share the basic 285-horsepower V-6, 10-speed automatic, standard AWD, and 5,000-pound towing rating. They are not the versions to choose if trail use is the priority, because the TrailSport is the trim that adds the all-terrain tires, off-road suspension tuning, skid plates, and recovery hooks.
Honda’s U.S. pricing listed during research was:
| Trim | Starting MSRP | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| TrailSport | $48,650 | Gets the core trail hardware without paying primarily for luxury upgrades. |
| TrailSport Elite | $52,650 | Adds comfort equipment and second-generation TrailWatch. |
| TrailSport Elite Blackout | $53,850 | Adds the Blackout appearance treatment to the higher TrailSport Elite specification. |
Those are U.S. starting prices found during research and exclude tax, registration, destination charges, and accessories. Buyers should verify current pricing and equipment with Honda before purchase.
For capability-focused buyers, the standard TrailSport is probably the rational choice. The TrailSport Elite adds heated and ventilated front seats, Bose audio, rear-door sunshades, and TrailWatch, but the research does not indicate a fundamentally different suspension or drivetrain. Choose the Elite for comfort and visibility technology, not because it is a substantially more capable off-road machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Useful accessories—and what they cannot do
Honda offers accessories that make sense for remote travel, but each solves a specific problem rather than transforming the Passport’s basic limits.
- Full-size spare tire kit: A valuable option for long trips because it provides a larger backup tire than a compact spare. It is especially relevant when a damaged all-terrain tire cannot be repaired safely on the trail.
- Front scuff plate: Helps protect the front area from scratches and bumps. It is protection, not extra clearance.
- Rock sliders: Honda describes its hardened-steel sliders as protection against high-centering and ledge-drop-off damage. They can reduce damage from contact, but they cannot make an obstacle shorter.
- Roof platform: Honda rates the platform for up to 165 pounds and designs it to work with Honda Genuine Accessories. It can expand carrying capacity for camping or recovery equipment, while also adding height, weight, and aerodynamic drag. The platform rating should not be treated as permission to exceed the Passport’s own roof-load limits.
- Cabin and cargo protection: Owners who expect mud, sand, or wet gear may want to compare 2026 Honda Passport all-weather floor mats or a model-specific cargo liner. Fitment should be confirmed for the U.S.-market 2026 model and exact trim before ordering; a generic listing is not automatically Honda-approved.
- Tire-management equipment: A portable tire inflator for off-road travel and a tubeless tire-repair kit can help with ordinary puncture preparation on gravel or remote roads. Neither replaces a full-size spare, a properly rated jack, or professional repair when the tire or wheel is seriously damaged.
- Recovery equipment: An off-road recovery strap can be sensible for isolated dirt, sand, or muddy travel, but owners must follow the Passport’s recovery-point instructions, use equipment with appropriate ratings, and understand the difference between a controlled pull and a high-energy recovery. The presence of recovery hooks is not a guarantee that every recovery method or accessory is appropriate.
Owners considering Honda Passport TrailSport rock sliders and a front scuff plate should verify availability and installation requirements through Honda or an authorized dealer. The same applies to the Honda Passport TrailSport roof platform and Honda Passport TrailSport full-size spare tire kit. Exact model-year and trim compatibility matters, particularly on a newly redesigned vehicle.
Replacement tires also deserve attention. The original TrailSport specification is 275/60R18 all-terrain. When replacing them, owners should confirm load rating, size, speed rating, wheel compatibility, and whether the tire is appropriate for the vehicle’s AWD system. More aggressive tires may improve loose-surface traction, but they can also increase road noise and potentially affect efficiency and handling.

So, should you believe Honda?
Believe the hardware and the testing, but not an unlimited interpretation of the marketing.
The 2026 Passport TrailSport is a genuine trail-capable crossover. It has standard AWD across the Passport lineup, and the TrailSport adds the tires, suspension tuning, skid plates, recovery hooks, and drive-mode technology that make off-pavement use more than an appearance exercise. Independent evaluations found useful traction on steep climbs, loose dirt and gravel, uneven terrain, ruts, and a deep-water crossing.
It is best understood as a vehicle for owners who want a comfortable family crossover that can reach campsites, trailheads, remote cabins, beaches, forest roads, and moderate recreational trails. It is a poor choice for someone whose regular routes involve technical rocks, tall ledges, deep cross-axle obstacles, or trails where vehicles with more than 11 inches of clearance routinely travel.
Honda’s claim is therefore credible with an asterisk: the Passport TrailSport is an off-roader in the light-to-moderate, daily-drivable crossover sense—not a hardcore 4×4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport really go off-road?
Yes, if you mean gravel roads, forest roads, sand, dirt, moderate ruts, and recreational trails. The TrailSport has all-terrain tires, off-road-tuned suspension, skid plates, recovery hooks, standard AWD, and trail-specific drive modes. It is not designed to match a Wrangler or 4Runner on technical terrain.
Is the Passport TrailSport Elite more capable than the regular TrailSport?
No. The TrailSport Elite adds features such as second-generation TrailWatch, heated and ventilated seats, Bose audio, and rear-door sunshades. The core trail hardware is already on the regular TrailSport, so the Elite is primarily a comfort and visibility upgrade rather than a major capability upgrade.
How much can the 2026 Passport tow?
The Passport’s maximum towing rating is 5,000 pounds in the researched U.S. specification. That is useful for road towing, but towing capacity does not indicate how well a vehicle will crawl over rocks or handle extreme trail obstacles.
What should I add before taking a Passport TrailSport on remote trails?
The most relevant preparation items are a full-size spare, tire-management equipment, properly rated recovery gear, and additional protection such as Honda’s front scuff plate and rock sliders. Verify exact 2026 model-year and trim fitment, and remember that protection accessories do not add clearance or create low-range gearing.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport is more than a styling package and should handle moderate trails better than a conventional crossover. Its 8.3 inches of clearance, unibody platform, lack of low-range gearing, and absence of locking differentials keep it well short of Wrangler- or 4Runner-level extreme-terrain capability.
