The Honda S2000 is a discontinued, two-seat, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster built around a high-revving naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. For a late U.S.-market example, Honda quoted 237 hp from a 2.2-liter engine; the track-focused S2000 CR added sharper steering, firmer suspension and a removable hardtop. Used values depend heavily on year and condition: July 2026 U.S. guides put selected cars in the tens of thousands of dollars, while individual auction sales vary widely.

What is the Honda S2000?

Honda introduced the S2000 in 1999 for the 2000 model year in the United States. Worldwide production ended in June 2009; Honda reported more than 110,000 sales globally through December 2008. It is a two-seat roadster with a front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and an open-top layout. Its appeal rests on the combination of a naturally aspirated VTEC engine, six-speed manual, balanced chassis and direct sports-car character.

Honda’s final U.S. model-year announcement described the car as “a sports car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.” The quote is from John Mendel, then executive vice president of American Honda, in the company’s January 26, 2009 announcement (Honda’s final U.S. model-year announcement).

How the S2000 developed

Honda’s global timeline documents the Japanese-market evolution. These dates and specifications should not be treated as exact U.S. model-year equivalents: changes arrived at different times across markets.

Japanese-market milestone Change
September 1998 Prototype shown.
April 1999 Debut with a 2.0-liter engine.
July 2000 Type V added variable gear-ratio steering.
2003 Styling and equipment changes.
2004 Production moved from Tochigi to Suzuka.
November 2005 Displacement increased from 2.0 to 2.2 liters, with drive-by-wire and interior and exterior changes.
2007 Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and the Type S grade added.

The original Japanese-market car used a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated DOHC VTEC four-cylinder. Honda’s global history lists 250 PS at 8,300 rpm and a 9,000-rpm maximum for that specification; those figures describe that Japanese specification and should not be generalized to every market (Honda global production history).

U.S. S2000 performance and equipment

For the 2008 U.S. S2000, Honda specified a 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC four-cylinder producing 237 hp at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm. It was paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual. Honda also listed double-wishbone suspension, electric power steering and a torque-sensing limited-slip rear differential, and described the car’s weight balance as an ideal 50/50 (Honda’s 2008 U.S. S2000 release).

These are manufacturer specifications, not a claim that every market or model year had identical output. The engine’s high-revving character is central to the S2000 experience: it rewards drivers who use the manual gearbox and keep the engine in its power band, while the rear-drive layout and limited-slip differential support a more involved feel than a typical open-top cruiser.

S2000 vs. S2000 CR

The 2008 S2000 CR was aimed at track days and club racing. Honda altered steering, suspension, tires and body equipment for a more focused setup; the standard S2000 remained the more road-oriented configuration.

Feature 2008 S2000 2008 S2000 CR
Intended use Road-focused roadster. Track days and club racing.
Steering ratio 14.9:1. 13.8:1, a quicker ratio.
Rear tire size 245/40R17. 255/40R17; front tires were 215/45R17.
Top Powered soft top. Removable aluminum hardtop replaces the soft top.
Weight difference Reference car. Honda listed 51 pounds saved with the hardtop installed, or 99 pounds with it removed, relative to the standard 2008 car.
Comfort equipment Not specified in the cited CR comparison. Air conditioning and audio were optional.

The CR also received firmer suspension settings, aero spoilers and structural braces. Its changes prioritize sharper responses and reduced weight over the standard car’s all-weather convenience. The weight figures are Honda’s comparison against the standard 2008 S2000, not a general measurement for every car or configuration (Honda’s 2008 S2000 CR information).

Hagerty’s figures are U.S.-market references, not values to transfer directly to another country or currency. Its guide separates values by condition and notes that mileage, options and history can affect value (Hagerty’s 2000 S2000 valuation; Hagerty’s 2005 S2000 valuation). Completed auction outcomes show the spread between individual cars; they are not promises of what a buyer will pay or an owner can sell for (Bring a Trailer S2000 sold listings).

How to compare two S2000 prices

  • Match model year and trim, including standard S2000 versus CR.
  • Compare mileage alongside condition, not in isolation.
  • Check originality and modifications, title and accident history, service records and provenance.
  • Account for location and local market; the guide values above are U.S.-specific.

Where to find Honda S2000 photos

Honda’s final-year U.S. release provides dedicated Release, Photos and Video material that can help readers see period S2000 and CR imagery (Honda’s final U.S. model-year release). Check rights and terms before reusing any image: Honda’s 2009 brochure says images are owned by American Honda or used under license and warns that reproduction without permission violates federal law (Honda’s 2009 S2000 brochure).
