The 2026 model is a hybrid with 200 hp of total system output and simulated shifts; the 2001 was a VTEC four-cylinder offered with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Honda’s specifications show similar length and headline horsepower for the manual 2001, but markedly different efficiency, transmission choices, dimensions and equipment.
How does the new Honda Prelude compare to the 2001 Prelude?
This comparison uses the U.S.-market 2026 Prelude Hybrid and the U.S.-market 2001 Prelude. Trim and market matter: Honda’s Japanese archive lists a different 2001 lineup, so Japanese trim names such as SiR and Type S should not be substituted for U.S. specifications.

Both cars seat four and send power to the front wheels. The 2026 pairs a 1,993-cc Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with a two-motor hybrid system. The 2001 uses a 2,157-cc DOHC VTEC inline-four without hybrid assistance. The two cars therefore share a basic coupe layout, not a powertrain approach.

| U.S. model and configuration | Power rating | Torque | Transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Prelude Hybrid | 200 hp total hybrid-system output; engine rated at 141 hp and electric motor at 181 hp | 232 lb-ft motor torque | Direct-drive unit with Honda S+ Shift |
| 2001 Prelude, five-speed manual | 200 hp at 7,000 rpm, engine output | 156 lb-ft at 5,250 rpm | Five-speed manual |
| 2001 Prelude, four-speed automatic | 195 hp at 6,600 rpm, engine output | 156 lb-ft at 5,250 rpm | Four-speed automatic |
| 2001 Prelude Type SH | 200 hp, engine output | 156 lb-ft at 5,250 rpm | Manual only; includes Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS) |
Honda’s figures for the 2026 engine and electric motor are component ratings; they should not be added together. The published 200-hp figure is the hybrid system’s total output. For the 2001, Honda’s January 4, 2001 specifications identify the regular manual car at 200 hp and the automatic at 195 hp; the Type SH is a separate, manual-only trim.

Does the new Prelude come with a manual?
No conventional manual transmission is listed for the U.S.-market 2026 Prelude. Its S+ Shift feature simulates gear changes through the direct-drive hybrid system; it is a driver-interface feature, not a manual gearbox. Honda offered a five-speed manual on the standard 2001 Prelude and the Type SH, while the standard model was also available with a four-speed automatic.
How do their published fuel-economy figures compare?
| Model and configuration | Honda-published fuel economy |
|---|---|
| 2026 Prelude Hybrid | 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, 44 mpg combined |
| 2001 Prelude, five-speed manual | 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway |
| 2001 Prelude, four-speed automatic | 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway |
These are the manufacturers’ figures for their respective model years, not a matched test under identical procedures or a prediction of present-day real-world fuel use. The 2001 specifications give city and highway estimates but no combined figure here; the 2026 combined rating should not be reconstructed by averaging its city and highway numbers.

Is the new Prelude faster or better at handling?
The specifications alone do not establish which car is faster, corners better, rides more comfortably or stops in a shorter distance. The available figures do not include a matched independent performance test, so a definitive driving-performance ranking would go beyond the evidence.

Honda documents different chassis hardware. The 2026 has dual-axis MacPherson front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, adaptive dampers, four drive modes and four-piston Brembo front calipers. The 2001 U.S. specification lists independent double-wishbone suspension at both ends; the Type SH adds ATTS. Those are equipment distinctions, not proof of a particular lap time or handling advantage.

How much bigger is the new Prelude?
| Published measure | 2026 Prelude Hybrid | 2001 Prelude |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 178.4 in | 178.0 in |
| Width | 74.0 in | 69.0 in |
| Height | 53.4 in | 51.8 in |
| Wheelbase | 102.6 in | 101.8 in |
| Passenger volume | 84.6 cu ft | 78.4 cu ft |
| Cargo volume | 15.1 cu ft | 8.7 cu ft |
| Seats | 4 | 4 |
Honda’s published length is nearly unchanged, while the 2026 is wider and taller, has a slightly longer wheelbase and lists more passenger and cargo volume. Cargo and cabin figures are manufacturer specifications from different model years; measurement conventions and test contexts may differ.
What equipment and safety technology changed?
Honda lists Honda Sensing driver-assistance features, a 9-inch touchscreen, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bose audio, heated front seats and a 60/40 folding rear seat among the 2026 Prelude’s features. Its adaptive dampers and Brembo front calipers are part of the chassis equipment.

The 2001 U.S. specification release documents period equipment including ABS and airbags, alongside features that varied by trim or option. A feature not mentioned in that release should not be taken as proof it was unavailable across every market, trim or later vehicle.
What does the 2026 Prelude cost compared with the 2001?
Honda’s U.S. page lists a starting MSRP of $42,000 for the 2026 Prelude Hybrid and $42,500 for Hybrid Two-Tone. Those manufacturer prices exclude tax, license, registration, a $1,295 destination charge and accessories; dealer prices and some color charges vary. They are listed MSRPs, not transaction prices.

The 2001 U.S. specification release used for this comparison does not provide an equivalent price basis. A direct dollar comparison across 25 years would require a separately sourced original MSRP and an explicit inflation method, so these figures do not establish how the cars compare in inflation-adjusted cost.
