Honda’s NSX has two production generations: the original, introduced in 1990, and the second generation, launched in August 2016. JAS Motorsport’s Tensei is a separate supercar inspired by the first-generation NSX—not a third Honda generation.

The dates and production quantity in this chronology are manufacturer-reported figures. Honda’s statement about the Type S quantity is a limited-production announcement, not a measure of cars delivered to any particular market.
What distinguishes the two Honda generations?
The first and second generations share a name and a broad ambition: to be a supercar shaped around its driver. But they represent different eras of the NSX story. Honda’s descriptions support a clear high-level comparison—an original model that established the lineage, followed by a new-generation car that carried the concept forward with a hybrid performance system. Generation one: the original model and its variants
Honda’s archive gives the first-generation NSX its proper role: it is the starting point of the production lineage, not a later homage to an earlier Honda. Honda places the NSX-R, NSX-T, and Type S among the variants associated with this period. Those names signal different branches within the first-generation story, but the chronology alone does not establish the full technical differences, market availability, or year-by-year changes for each variant.

Why the NSX Type S is not a third generation
The Type S name appears in both Honda’s first-generation archive and its second-generation ending, which can cause confusion. The decisive point is Honda’s own description of the second-generation NSX Type S as the final model of the second-generation NSX. Honda made that statement in an August 3, 2021 corporate news release and said production would end in December 2022.

That figure refers to the announced global production run, not a particular country’s allocation or a claim about how many are currently available for purchase. The Type S marks the close of generation two; it does not begin a new generation after it.
Use the context around the name to identify which Type S is being discussed: Honda’s archive records a Type S within the first-generation timeline, while the later NSX Type S was explicitly designated the final second-generation model. Shared trim or variant naming does not, by itself, make two cars part of the same generation.

Where JAS Motorsport’s Tensei fits
Tensei is connected to the NSX through inspiration, not through Honda’s production chronology. JAS Motorsport describes it as its first supercar, based on the DNA of the first-generation NSX. JAS says the project has a carbon-fibre body and an interior styled by Pininfarina; its August 2026 design announcement presented images of the car’s final production appearance. Those are statements about JAS’s project, not specifications for a Honda model.
Pininfarina’s own design account characterizes the work as a rethinking of the original rather than a simple restoration or update. That is the design firm’s framing of its role. It helps explain why Tensei can be discussed alongside the NSX, while still keeping the two projects distinct: one is Honda’s production model and the other is a separate supercar project drawing on the original’s identity.

The available company descriptions do not turn Tensei into a third-generation NSX. Honda’s official archive identifies two NSX production generations, while JAS identifies Tensei as its own first supercar. The accurate description is therefore “a modern reinterpretation inspired by the first-generation NSX,” rather than “the third-generation Honda NSX.” Nothing in those descriptions establishes that Honda makes or sells the Tensei.

What is known—and what is not established—about Tensei
- Established by JAS: Tensei is JAS Motorsport’s first supercar and is based on the first-generation NSX’s DNA.
- Established by JAS: The project uses a carbon-fibre body and has Pininfarina-styled body and interior design; JAS’s August 2026 announcement showed its final production appearance.
- Established as design context: Pininfarina describes its work as a rethinking of the original, rather than a straightforward restoration or update.
- Not established by these descriptions: a complete, independently verified final specification sheet, a price, current order availability, or a delivery timetable.
Until those commercial and technical details are confirmed by current primary information, treat Tensei’s appearance and stated inspiration as the established story, not as proof of a settled final specification or retail launch schedule.
How to describe the lineage accurately
For a concise account, separate three questions: who makes the vehicle, whether it is a production generation or a variant, and which earlier model it draws from. Applying those questions avoids the most common mix-up:
- Honda production generations: Count the original NSX introduced in 1990 and the second generation introduced in August 2016.
- Honda variants: Keep NSX-R, NSX-T, and Type S in the relevant generation’s variant history. In particular, call the later NSX Type S the final model of generation two, as Honda did.
- Independent projects: Describe Tensei as JAS Motorsport’s first supercar and a reinterpretation inspired by the first-generation NSX—not as a Honda generation.
This distinction lets Tensei remain part of the NSX’s wider design legacy without blurring the manufacturer’s model history. A vehicle can be meaningfully connected to a famous car through its design inspiration and still belong to a separate project and maker.
What the timeline says—and what it does not
The chronology answers the central lineage question clearly: Honda has two NSX production generations, and the Type S closed the second. It also establishes the second generation’s launch period, hybrid-system description, and announced final production endpoint.
