Honda NSX maintenance depends on the car’s generation, model year, and market. A first-generation NSX has a scheduled service table that includes timing-belt work; the 2017–2022 second-generation Acura NSX uses Maintenance Minder guidance and has hybrid-drive fluid service items. Before budgeting or buying, match the car to its own owner’s manual and verify completed work with dated records.
Why NSX maintenance depends on the generation
“Honda NSX” can refer to two very different service profiles. The first-generation car uses a conventional scheduled maintenance table, including engine-oil service and timing-belt replacement. The second-generation Acura NSX, sold for model years 2017–2022, uses the in-car Maintenance Minder along with model-specific scheduled items such as Twin Motor Unit fluid.

Those schedules are not interchangeable. Even within a generation, the applicable interval can depend on model year and market. Use the manual for the exact car, along with its service history; do not infer a due date from another NSX’s schedule or from a generic online maintenance list. If the car was originally sold in another country, confirm which market’s schedule and procedures apply.

For either generation, a maintenance schedule tells you when work is due; it does not establish that every possible fault has been ruled out. A purchase inspection and the car’s actual records remain important, especially when a service item is overdue or its history is unclear.

What scheduled maintenance does each generation call for?
| Car and source | Guidance established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 first-generation NSX owner’s manual | Engine oil every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 12 months; timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection are included in the scheduled maintenance. | Use whichever indicated distance or time comes first. This is the 2000 model-year schedule, not a universal interval for every first-generation car. |
| 2001 first-generation NSX owner’s manual | Maintenance is due at the indicated distance or time, whichever comes first; the schedule includes timing-belt and water-pump service. | Confirm the exact interval and required work in the manual for the car’s year and market. |
| 2022 second-generation Acura NSX guide | Lists engine oil and filter, front and rear brake inspection, air cleaner and cabin filters, transmission and clutch fluid, spark plugs and valve clearance, coolant, and Twin Motor Unit fluid among its maintenance items. | Use the 2022 guide and the car’s Maintenance Minder; these items and instructions should not be assumed to match other years or markets. |
| 2020 second-generation Acura NSX guide | Calls for inspection of the direct- and port-injection fuel system every three years or when service item B is indicated. | This is the 2020 guide’s instruction; check the correct year’s guide for another car. |
The 2022 Acura guide has two specific checks that are easy to miss if you look only at the Maintenance Minder: brake fluid is replaced every three years, independent of the Minder, and tires are inspected every 3,100 miles (5,000 km). Treat those as the 2022 guide’s instructions, rather than assuming they apply identically to every NC1 model year.
How to use the schedule
- Identify the car precisely. Record its model year, original market, generation, and transmission. If any of these are uncertain, resolve that before choosing a service interval.
- Find the matching manual or maintenance guide. Use the schedule for that specific year and market. For a second-generation car, check both the relevant guide and the in-car Maintenance Minder.
- Compare due items with dated invoices. Note the date and mileage for each completed service, not just a seller’s statement that the car is “up to date.”
- Ask a qualified shop to identify unknown or overdue work. Request a written estimate tied to the vehicle identification number (VIN), with the service scope stated clearly.
Timing-belt service on a first-generation NSX
Timing-belt service is a major maintenance-history question on the first-generation NSX because the official 2000 and 2001 manuals include belt replacement in the scheduled service. The 2000 manual also gives engine-oil service at 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 12 months. Its stated rule is to use whichever indicated distance or time comes first.
Do not take the 2000 manual’s interval and apply it automatically to every first-generation year. The available manuals establish that the belt belongs on the schedule, but the exact interval and service requirements must be confirmed for the car’s model year and market. A missing invoice is not proof that service was skipped, but it leaves the work unverified until records or a specialist establish what was done.

What to verify in the records
- Look for a dated invoice that identifies the car and records mileage, rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
- Check when the belt was replaced and whether the invoice documents the work actually performed.
- Look for the water-pump inspection noted in the maintenance schedule. Do not assume a belt invoice includes a particular additional part or labor operation unless it says so.
- If the date, mileage, or scope is missing, ask an NSX-experienced shop to assess what is due under the correct manual and quote the work in writing.
These checks establish documented service history, not a guarantee about the condition of every component. The manual identifies scheduled tasks; a shop must assess the individual vehicle and define any proposed work.
Second-generation NSX: fluids, tires, and Maintenance Minder
The second-generation Acura NSX has a different service picture. Its official guide lists engine oil and oil filter, brake inspections, air cleaner and cabin filters, transmission and clutch fluid, spark plugs and valve clearance, coolant, and Twin Motor Unit fluid among the maintenance items. That list makes it important to review fluid-service history rather than treating the car as though it were only a conventional engine-and-transmission service.
For a 2022 car, Acura specifies brake-fluid replacement every three years regardless of the Maintenance Minder and tire inspection every 3,100 miles (5,000 km). The 2020 guide additionally says to inspect the direct- and port-injection fuel system every three years or when service item B is indicated. These are year-specific guide details; check the guide matching the car rather than extending one year’s instructions to all 2017–2022 cars.

What a second-generation buyer should check
- Review Maintenance Minder history and invoices together. A display or seller summary alone may not document when a specific service was completed.
- Check the date of the brake-fluid replacement against the applicable guide. For a 2022 car, the three-year interval is independent of the Minder.
- Review tire inspection and condition records; the 2022 guide specifies inspection every 3,100 miles (5,000 km).
- Ask the shop to identify the status of transmission and clutch fluid, coolant, and Twin Motor Unit fluid against the correct model-year guide.
- For a 2020 car, include the guide’s three-year-or-service-item-B fuel-system inspection instruction in the history review.
Do not assume that a generic service menu covers every NSX-specific item. Ask the shop to state which scheduled items it checked, which it performed, and which remain due.

For some early five-speed manual NSXs, a transmission snap-ring issue is a specific history and inspection question. Car and Driver’s buyer guide describes the issue for a limited identified range of early transmissions. It does not establish that every early car will fail, nor does it provide a population-wide failure rate.
For a car that may fall within the affected range, have a qualified specialist check the transmission number and review the service history. Car and Driver also notes unusual shifter movement under changing engine load as a reason to investigate. Treat that symptom as a prompt for diagnosis, not proof that the snap ring has failed.

There is no reliable single maintenance budget for every NSX. Model year, location, the work required, parts availability, labor rate, and the shop’s scope all affect the estimate. The available figures below are useful only with their original qualifications.
| Published figure | What it represents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| $1,553–$1,717 | Kelley Blue Book estimate page accessed in 2026 for a timing-belt replacement on a 1999 Acura NSX near Asheville, North Carolina; the estimate includes parts and labor. | Location-specific estimate, not a nationwide price or a guaranteed dealer quote for another vehicle or region. |
| $3,000–$4,000 | Car and Driver’s 2013 buyer-guide estimate for snap-ring repair. | Historical published estimate, not a current repair price. |
| Owner-submitted repair amounts | NSX FAQ historical repair-cost entries. | Contributed records, not a standardized survey or market average. |
These figures cannot establish what a particular car will cost to maintain today. No comprehensive current nationwide NSX maintenance price list or population-level failure-rate statistic is established by these sources. For a useful budget, request a current written estimate from a qualified shop, tied to the VIN and specifying labor, parts, and the work included.

How to make estimates comparable
- Give each shop the same vehicle details, including model year, market, transmission, and VIN.
- Ask the shop to separate scheduled maintenance from diagnosis or additional repairs.
- Request the mileage or date basis for each recommended service and the manual or guide item it addresses.
- Confirm whether quoted parts and labor are included, and whether the estimate is for inspection only or completed work.
- Compare written scopes, not just headline totals. A lower estimate may cover different work.
Pre-purchase inspection and service-history checklist
When viewing an NSX, focus first on what can be documented and what a specialist can verify. A tidy service summary is less useful than dated invoices that identify the work performed.
- Gather the records. Ask for invoices with dates, mileage, and itemized work. Mark gaps rather than treating them as proof of either good or poor maintenance.
- Match the schedule. Compare records with the owner’s manual or Acura guide for the exact year and market.
- For a first-generation car, investigate timing-belt history. Confirm the last documented replacement, its mileage and date, and whether the invoice describes the work. Check water-pump inspection history as well.
- For an early five-speed manual, request a transmission-number check. Have a specialist assess whether it falls within the range described by Car and Driver, review available history, and investigate unusual shifter movement under changing load.
- For a second-generation car, review Minder and fluid records. Confirm brake-fluid service and tire inspections against the correct guide, and ask about transmission, clutch, coolant, and Twin Motor Unit fluid history.
- Arrange an NSX-experienced inspection. Ask for findings and recommended work in writing. A maintenance schedule cannot substitute for assessment of the specific car.
- Obtain a VIN-specific estimate. Have the shop state the work, parts, labor, and assumptions before using the figure to set a budget or negotiate.
Honda Japan’s NSX Service Program
Honda Japan describes an NSX Service Program for NSX models released from 2017 onward. It combines statutory inspections with Honda-recommended maintenance and includes an NSX-specific alignment measurement. The page describes six-month and 12-month inspections as well as a 24-month statutory inspection.
Program contents and prices vary by NSX Performance Dealer, so current terms must be confirmed with the local dealer. This is information about Honda Japan’s program; it does not establish that the same package or pricing is available in North America or elsewhere.
How to compare two NSXs responsibly
Do not label one generation categorically cheaper or more reliable on the basis of different schedules or a few repair anecdotes. A fair comparison starts with the individual cars and equivalent documentation.
Quick Recap
- Service system: compare the first-generation scheduled table with the second-generation guide and Maintenance Minder history.
- Generation-specific work: verify timing-belt history on the first-generation car and hybrid-drive and fluid service history on the second-generation car.
- Records and condition: weigh dated invoices and specialist findings more heavily than broad claims about the model.
- Local support and estimates: check whether an experienced shop can inspect the car and provide a written estimate for the work actually due.
- Year and market: confirm that both cars are being assessed against the correct manual and procedures for their model year and original market.
