How to Read 0–60 and Quarter-Mile Test Results—and Why They Vary

A 0–60 or quarter-mile result depends on timing convention, launch, surface, conditions, and run selection. Here’s how to read the numbers and compare them fairly.

A published 0–60 or quarter-mile time is the result of a particular test procedure, not a universal measurement made the same way by every outlet. To compare two cars fairly, check where timing starts, how each car was launched, what surface and conditions were used, whether times were corrected, and whether each figure is the quickest of several runs. Those details can matter as much as the headline number.

Two common questions capture the issue: “Why are 0–60 times different for the same car?” and “What does one-foot rollout mean?” The answers begin with the timer convention, but they also involve the launch, vehicle setup, test surface, conditions, and which run an outlet chooses to report.

Why are 0–60 times different for the same car?

Two published numbers can both be accurate records of their tests and still differ because the tests were not identical. One outlet may start its clock after the car has moved a foot; another may remove that rollout from the reported time. A car may be tested with launch control on one occasion and without it on another. Surface grip, weather, vehicle equipment, and the selected run can also differ.

That is why a 0–60 figure should be read as a measurement with a method attached, rather than as a fixed property of a model. A quarter-mile elapsed time and trap speed also describe different outcomes. Before ranking results, establish which metric is being compared and how it was obtained.

The phrase “the same car” can hide important differences. One test may involve a different trim or drivetrain, tires, equipment, or payload. Even when the model name is identical, the exact test vehicle and the circumstances of its run may not be. If those details are not disclosed, treat them as unknown rather than assuming they match.

What does one-foot rollout mean?

With one-foot rollout, the timer starts after the car has traveled the first foot, rather than at the instant it begins moving from a standstill. The resulting 0–60 time therefore does not include the time spent covering that initial foot. It will generally be quicker than a zero-rollout measurement of the same run, but it is not a universal adjustment that can be applied by subtracting a fixed amount from every published result.

Car and Driver says it adopted one-foot rollout in 2019 and publishes rollout times so readers can calculate a zero-rollout time. Its methodology page states: “We changed our procedure in 2019 to now use the industry standard 1-foot rollout and publish those rollout times for anyone wanting to compute the true zero to 60 mph time.” Read the outlet’s current testing methodology to see how it describes its procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Car and Driver’s separate rollout explainer says rollout can affect elapsed time by as much as 0.3 second. That is the outlet’s 2005 explanation of rollout’s potential effect, not a universal amount to subtract from every car’s time or a general estimate of how much test results vary. See The Importance of ‘Rollout’ for that context.

MotorTrend describes removing one-foot rollout from acceleration times. This is a different way of presenting the timing convention from publishing rollout figures for readers to use. Consult its testing-methodology page rather than assuming that its displayed times use the same convention as another publication.

When a source provides both rollout and zero-rollout figures, compare the version that matches the other source’s convention. If it gives only one number and does not explain the timer, the label “0–60” alone does not tell you whether the first foot was included. Do not treat a difference between two such numbers as a clean measure of vehicle performance until you know how each clock started.

What do 0–60, quarter-mile elapsed time, and trap speed tell you?

Measure What it records How to use it
0–60 mph Elapsed time to reach 60 mph under the publication’s timing and launch procedure. Useful for comparing acceleration from a start only when the timing convention, launch conditions, and test context are reasonably alike.
Quarter-mile elapsed time Time taken to cover a quarter-mile under the test procedure. Shows how quickly the vehicle completed the distance; the launch can influence the elapsed result.
Quarter-mile trap speed The vehicle’s terminal speed near the end of the measured quarter-mile. Read alongside elapsed time as a separate result. It is not a replacement for elapsed time, and elapsed time is not a substitute for it.
Sixty-foot time Time to cover the first 60 feet, as defined in drag racing. Can help explain launch and early traction in a drag-racing pass, but it is not the same metric as a road-test 0–60 time.

The NHRA media guide calls sixty-foot time the most accurate measure of a launch in most cases. That description concerns the drag-racing measure and does not make sixty-foot time interchangeable with a road-test acceleration figure. The guide’s glossary defines the distance and its role.

For a quarter-mile comparison, keep elapsed time and trap speed in separate columns in your notes. A fast launch can help produce a low elapsed time, while trap speed tells you how fast the car is traveling near the end of the distance. Neither one alone fully describes the pass.

This distinction matters when a car’s numbers seem to tell different stories. A lower elapsed time means the vehicle completed the measured distance sooner under that test procedure; a higher trap speed means it was moving faster near the end. Those are related but not interchangeable observations. Do not infer a trap speed from an elapsed time, or use trap speed by itself to claim which car completed the quarter-mile first.

Which test details can change a result?

Timer convention

First establish whether the published 0–60 figure uses one-foot rollout or a zero-rollout method. If an outlet publishes a rollout time and a corresponding zero-rollout figure, use the figure that matches the convention of the other result. Do not infer the convention from the phrase “0–60” alone.

Launch method and driver execution

A launch-control system, its settings, traction-control settings, and the way the driver executes the start can affect a pass. MotorTrend says it uses launch control when available. That is a description of its practice, not evidence that every outlet uses launch control or that every vehicle offers it. A result from a car with a different launch setup is not automatically a like-for-like comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reading a test report, look for whether launch control was available and used, and whether the outlet mentions traction-control settings. If a system was unavailable or the procedure is not stated, record that limitation. The source material does not establish one launch setup as the right choice for every vehicle or a numerical adjustment for different techniques.

Surface and available grip

A prepared dragstrip and ordinary pavement are not equivalent test surfaces. Grip and the conditions at the start affect how effectively a car can put power down. The sources cited here do not establish a universal numerical adjustment for one surface versus another, so do not try to “correct” a time by a guessed amount. Record the surface when the outlet states it; if it is not stated, treat the comparison as less certain.

A surface difference can complicate the comparison even if both tests use the same model and timer convention. A stated surface is useful context, but it does not provide a conversion formula. If the outlet does not identify the surface, that missing detail should narrow the conclusion you draw, not invite an assumed correction.

Weather, correction, and preparation

Temperature, pressure, humidity, altitude, and wind exposure can be relevant to interpreting a test, but no universal amount by which these variables change a result is established here. Some outlets apply corrections and others may not. MotorTrend says it applies weather correction to gas and diesel acceleration results; that policy should not be assumed for every publisher, vehicle type, or test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MotorTrend’s testing explanation says SAE J1349 is used as a guide for corrections to standard operating conditions. This does not establish that all publications use SAE J1349 or that every vehicle category is corrected in the same way. Car and Driver, meanwhile, specifies manufacturer-recommended cold tire pressure for its test vehicles. These are outlet-specific disclosed practices, not a shared industry procedure. See MotorTrend’s testing explanation for its account of corrections and run selection.

Look for a publisher’s stated correction policy rather than trying to calculate your own adjustment from a weather report. The figures may be corrected, uncorrected, or presented under a particular outlet’s method; another publisher’s practice cannot resolve what an unreported test did. Tire pressure is another preparation detail that may be stated. Car and Driver’s specified practice is manufacturer-recommended cold tire pressure, but that should not be generalized to other publishers.

Exact vehicle configuration

“The same car” may not mean the same test vehicle. Trim, drivetrain, tires, equipment, payload, and other vehicle details can differ. Use the most specific vehicle description each source provides. If one result is for a different trim or drivetrain, or the tire and equipment details are missing, note that uncertainty rather than treating the figures as a controlled back-to-back test.

Make a short record of the exact vehicle as described by each outlet before comparing the headline numbers. If one report names the trim and drivetrain while another gives only a model family, the missing specification matters: you cannot confirm that the test vehicles match. Do not fill those gaps from a different test or assume that equipment and tires were identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which run the outlet reports

An outlet may conduct multiple runs and publish a best result. MotorTrend notes that its best 0–60 time and best quarter-mile result can come from different passes. Consequently, those two published bests do not necessarily describe one single run. Do not combine them into a fictional pass or assume that the quickest quarter-mile time came from the same launch as the quickest 0–60 time.

Run selection also affects what a table of headline figures represents. A best run is a selected result, not necessarily an average or a typical repeat. If an outlet explains that its figures are bests, preserve that description when comparing them. If the selection method is not stated, do not assume that two publishers selected or summarized runs in the same way.

How should you compare two published results?

Work through the details in this order. The first mismatch to resolve is usually the metric or timing convention; later comparisons are less useful if the numbers do not measure the same thing.

  1. Match the metric. Compare 0–60 with 0–60, quarter-mile elapsed time with elapsed time, and trap speed with trap speed. Keep sixty-foot time separate from road-test 0–60.
  2. Check the clock. Find out whether the result uses one-foot rollout, zero rollout, or another explicitly described convention. If a publication offers both rollout and zero-rollout times, select the one that matches the other source.
  3. Confirm the vehicle. Match trim, drivetrain, tires, and stated equipment as closely as possible. Note differences and missing details rather than assuming they are immaterial.
  4. Compare the launch procedure. Look for launch control, traction-control settings, and any description of how the run was started. If those details differ or are absent, do not present the times as directly equivalent.
  5. Check the test surface and conditions. Note whether the pass was on a dragstrip or another surface, and whether weather or other conditions were reported or corrected.
  6. Read the publisher’s method page. Check the outlet’s current explanation of its timing, corrections, and test practices. Do not transfer one publisher’s methodology to another.
  7. Identify run selection. Find out whether the number is a best run or another kind of result, and remember that the best 0–60 and quarter-mile figures may come from different passes.
  8. State the comparison’s limits. If key conditions are not reported, say that the figures are not fully comparable instead of inventing an adjustment.

A practical comparison note can be as simple as: metric; rollout convention; exact trim and drivetrain; launch method; surface; correction policy; and whether the value is a best run. If a source does not disclose one of those items, mark it as unreported in your own comparison. That makes a difference in procedure visible instead of disguising it as a difference in the cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if two outlets list a 0–60 time but only one identifies its rollout convention, begin by flagging the timer mismatch or uncertainty. Then check whether the trim, drivetrain, launch method, surface, corrections, and run selection are disclosed. You may still report both figures, but explain that the method details are not fully matched. The comparison is more useful when it states what the numbers show and what they cannot establish.

How to read publisher methods without overgeneralizing

Method pages help explain a result, but they describe the named publisher’s testing rather than a universal rule. The disclosed procedures below illustrate why two outlets’ numbers may need qualification before comparison.

Publisher or source Disclosed point relevant to comparison What not to assume
Car and Driver Its current methodology page says it changed to one-foot rollout in 2019 and publishes rollout times so readers can compute a zero-rollout time. It also specifies manufacturer-recommended cold tire pressure for test vehicles. Do not apply the 2019 change or its tire-pressure practice to other outlets, or treat rollout and zero-rollout figures as identical.
MotorTrend Its methodology page describes using launch control when available, applying weather correction to gas and diesel acceleration results, removing one-foot rollout, and not relying on the vehicle’s own speed data. Its testing explanation says SAE J1349 is a guide for corrections and that best 0–60 and quarter-mile results may come from different passes. Do not assume every publisher corrects results, uses SAE J1349, or selects runs the same way. Do not treat MotorTrend’s best metrics as necessarily belonging to a single pass.
NHRA media guide Defines sixty-foot time as the time to cover the first 60 feet and identifies it as a useful launch measure in most cases. Do not substitute a drag-racing sixty-foot result for a road-test 0–60 time.

One especially important distinction is that a method page is not a promise that all tests elsewhere follow the same rules. Car and Driver’s rollout and tire-pressure descriptions, MotorTrend’s launch and correction descriptions, and the NHRA’s drag-racing definition serve different purposes. Use each disclosure to interpret the result it accompanies; do not combine them into a single assumed standard.

Can you measure your own 0–60 or quarter-mile time?

A GPS performance meter or vehicle acceleration meter can record acceleration and quarter-mile runs, but a consumer measurement is not automatically equivalent to a publication test. Device accuracy, setup, and procedure affect what it records. An Edge Products device manual lists 0–60 and quarter-mile test functions and warns that speedometer calibration, sampling rate, and tire slippage can affect displayed readings. Those cautions describe factors to consider, not proof that a particular device matches professional test equipment. The manual is available at Edge Products’ performance-testing device manual.

If you record your own runs, keep the procedure consistent and write down the conditions alongside the result. A change in setup between runs can make the numbers harder to interpret; a repeatable procedure gives you a more meaningful comparison within your own records. Do not compare your device’s figure with a magazine time until you know whether timing begins at a standstill or uses rollout, and whether the measurement and vehicle setup are sufficiently similar.

Before treating a device reading as a comparison point, check its setup and the limitations described in its manual. The listed concerns—speedometer calibration, sampling rate, and tire slippage—are reminders that a displayed number depends on measurement conditions. Recording the device, procedure, and circumstances for your own runs helps you distinguish a change in the car from a change in how the run was measured. It does not make a consumer result interchangeable with a professional test.

What can you conclude when details are missing?

A result with an undisclosed timing convention or launch procedure can still describe what that outlet measured, but it supports a weaker comparison with a result whose method is known. Missing information is not a reason to assume the most favorable or familiar method. Treat the headline time as a point of reference, not a definitive ranking, and be clear about the undisclosed variables.

  • If rollout is unknown: do not equate the number with a zero-rollout result or apply a generic subtraction.
  • If weather correction is unknown: do not assume the number is corrected or uncorrected based on another publisher’s practice.
  • If the launch or surface is unknown: avoid attributing the whole difference to the vehicle.
  • If only elapsed time is shown: do not infer trap speed or the vehicle’s behavior near the end of the quarter-mile.
  • If the best-run policy is unclear: do not assume different metrics describe one pass.

The most defensible conclusion is often narrower than “this car is faster.” You may be able to say that one published test recorded a lower time, while also noting that rollout, setup, surface, corrections, or run selection were not matched or reported. That distinction preserves what the measurements show without claiming they prove more than they do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does one-foot rollout make a 0–60 time faster?

It generally produces a quicker figure than timing the same run from a standstill because the clock starts after the car has traveled the first foot. The amount is not a fixed adjustment for every car. Car and Driver’s 2005 rollout explainer says the effect can be as much as 0.3 second; that is not a universal subtraction.

Can I compare 0–60 times from different publications?

Yes, but first check whether the outlets use the same timer convention, launch procedure, surface, correction policy, vehicle configuration, and run-selection method. If key details differ or are not reported, describe the comparison as limited rather than treating the times as directly equivalent.

Are quarter-mile elapsed time and trap speed the same thing?

No. Elapsed time is how long the vehicle takes to cover the quarter-mile; trap speed is its speed near the end of that distance. Read them as separate measurements. A quick elapsed time does not supply a trap speed, and trap speed does not tell you the elapsed time.

Does the best 0–60 time come from the same pass as the best quarter-mile time?

Not necessarily. MotorTrend says its best 0–60 and quarter-mile results may come from different passes. Do not combine separately selected best figures into a single imagined run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a 60-foot time tell me?

In drag racing, it is the time to cover the first 60 feet and can help describe the launch and early traction. The NHRA media guide calls it the most accurate measure of a launch in most cases. It is not interchangeable with a road-test 0–60 time.

Can a phone or GPS performance meter match a magazine test?

Do not assume so. A GPS or vehicle acceleration meter can record 0–60 and quarter-mile runs, but accuracy, setup, and procedure matter. An Edge Products device manual notes that speedometer calibration, sampling rate, and tire slippage can affect displayed readings. Compare methods before treating the results as equivalent.

The Bottom Line

Read 0–60 and quarter-mile figures as results of specific tests, not universal specifications. Match the metric and rollout convention first, then check the launch, surface, conditions and corrections, vehicle configuration, and run selection. If important details are missing, report the number with that limitation instead of applying a guessed adjustment or claiming a definitive ranking.
