Can you rank Honda HR-V generations by reliability?
Not defensibly from the available comparable evidence. Consumer Reports’ reported ratings offer useful year-by-year signals, but they are relative to other vehicles from the same model year. They do not constitute a controlled comparison between HR-V generations, and the available excerpts do not provide a complete score series or survey sample sizes.
For North American used-car shopping, treat the model years below as a directional comparison—not proof that one generation is inherently more reliable or that every vehicle from a favored year is a safe buy.

What “generation” means for a North American HR-V
HR-V generation history is market-dependent. The original global HR-V was sold from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan, and selected Asia-Pacific markets. North America began receiving the revived HR-V with the 2016 model year. Later, the HR-V name was used for different vehicles in global markets and North America; consequently, “third generation” can mean different lineups depending on the market. Honda HR-V model history
For a North American used-car comparison, identify the vehicle by its model year and market rather than assuming a global generation label maps cleanly to a U.S. or Canadian vehicle. The available reliability evidence here does not support a numerical ranking of North American generations.

Do complaint totals show which HR-V year is most reliable?
No. ForCar reported 1,803 owner complaints filed with NHTSA across 2016–2026 HR-V model years, including 283 electrical-system reports, on a page updated October 3, 2026. The page says complaints are unverified reports, not confirmed defects or recalls. Those raw totals are not adjusted for how many vehicles are on the road, mileage, time in service, or likelihood of reporting, so they cannot establish failure rates or support a fair generation ranking. The same page records complaints describing 92 crashes, six fires, and one death. These are descriptions in submitted complaints, not independently verified causal or safety findings. Electrical complaints are a reason to ask about symptoms and repairs on an individual vehicle, not evidence that every HR-V has an electrical defect.

ForCar’s separate ranking page explains that it excludes model years considered too new for a fair ranking because complaint histories accumulate over time. Its published text is internally inconsistent about how many years qualify and how many fall into each category, so it should not be treated as a definitive ranked result. How to choose a used HR-V year without overreading the rankings
- Use the ratings to prioritize candidates, not decide for you. The favorable 2020 and 2024 relative ratings and weaker 2023 rating can inform a search, but do not establish how a particular car was maintained or how it will perform.
- Check recall status by VIN. Use the vehicle’s identification number to confirm whether campaigns apply and whether required work is complete. Model-year recall counts are not a substitute for an individual VIN check; available search results indicate recalls across multiple years, including 2025.
- Review records and condition. Compare maintenance documentation, mileage, ownership history where available, and the car’s present condition. A model-year label cannot replace evaluating the individual vehicle.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to evaluate the specific vehicle and investigate any warning lights, electrical symptoms, or repair history rather than assuming a complaint trend applies to it.
