Car and Driver recorded 4.9 seconds, while MotorTrend recorded 5.3 seconds. That spread is normal for a front-wheel-drive car with a six-speed manual: launch surface, tire condition, weather, rollout treatment and test procedure all affect the result.

The figures below come from North American/United States-market material and instrumented reviews. They should be read as test results or manufacturer claims, not as one universal number for every car.

Why two credible tests show different 0–60 times
Car and Driver’s 4.9-second run and MotorTrend’s 5.3-second run do not indicate that one publication tested a different powertrain. They reflect the sensitivity of a manual, front-wheel-drive launch to conditions and measurement rules.

Launch and surface
The driver must balance clutch engagement, throttle and front-tire traction. Pavement temperature, dust, moisture and available grip can change the first 60 feet substantially.

Measurement method
Publications may use different timing equipment, rollout conventions and shift strategies. A timer that includes or excludes a rollout will not produce the same number from the same run.
Weather, tires and break-in
Air temperature, altitude, fuel load and tire temperature affect acceleration. Tire wear and pressure matter as well. Car and Driver’s tested car used Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in 265/30ZR19 size; other cars, tire pressures or replacement tires may not reproduce that result.

Engine, transmission and drivetrain
Turbocharged 2.0-liter engine
Honda’s 2025 Civic Type R feature guide describes a “2.0-liter, turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 4-cylinder VTEC® engine with direct injection.” Honda rates it at 315 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque from 2,600 to 4,000 rpm (SAE net).

All of that output reaches the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. This layout keeps the car light and engaging but gives the front tires responsibility for both steering and acceleration. It helps explain why launch execution has a larger effect on observed 0–60 times than a simple horsepower comparison suggests.

How quick is the Type R in the quarter mile?
The quickest published quarter-mile result is 13.5 seconds at 106 mph from Car and Driver. MotorTrend recorded 13.9 seconds at 104.2 mph. Elapsed time measures how quickly the car completes the run; trap speed gives a clearer indication of the speed it carries near the finish. As with 0–60 testing, launch quality and procedure account for much of the difference.
Cornering and braking performance
Skidpad grip
Car and Driver measured 1.02 g on the skidpad. That number is a controlled, constant-radius measure of lateral grip, not a promise that every road or track corner will produce the same acceleration. Surface, tires and temperature remain important.

Braking
In Car and Driver’s test, the Type R stopped from 70 mph in 153 feet. Braking distance depends on the pavement and tire condition as well as brake temperature, so it is best used as a benchmark for that instrumented test rather than a fixed guarantee.
What the numbers say about the car’s performance brief
The Type R is quick in a straight line, but its published results emphasize a broader circuit-focused package. A 1.02-g skidpad result, strong braking distance and the limited-slip differential complement the turbo engine without requiring all-wheel drive. The front-drive/manual combination rewards a driver who can manage weight transfer, clutch engagement and wheelspin instead of delivering identical launches automatically.

How to quote a Civic Type R 0–60 time accurately
- Identify the generation and market: these figures concern the FL5 Civic Type R and U.S.-market 2025 Honda specifications.
- Name the test source and year rather than presenting one number as official: Car and Driver measured 4.9 seconds; MotorTrend measured 5.3 seconds.
- State the procedure when available, including whether the figure is instrumented and whether rollout treatment is known.
- Keep Honda’s 169-mph figure labeled as a manufacturer claim, separate from independently measured acceleration, braking and cornering results.
