Short answer: Tesla has not confirmed an orderable production vehicle officially called the Model 2. As of September 30, 2026, “Model 2” remains an unofficial media and enthusiast name for a possible smaller, cheaper Tesla. The often-repeated $25,000 price, estimated 250-mile range and 2026 launch date are not Tesla-certified specifications or commitments.
Is the Tesla Model 2 a real car?
There is no Tesla order page, official price list, EPA certification, delivery timetable or owner documentation for a vehicle named Model 2. Tesla has discussed adding more affordable models, but its published materials do not use Model 2 as a product name.

The name comes from the company’s long-running affordable-car ambitions and from media coverage of a possible compact EV. It should therefore be treated as shorthand, not as a confirmed model designation. A future car could receive a different name, use a derivative of an existing vehicle or never reach production.

Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 update said the company was preparing additional models. Its capacity presentation identified existing Model S/Model X, Model 3/Model Y, Cybertruck and Cybercab programs, but did not list a Model 2 or publish a $25,000 MSRP.

The same disclosure listed installed annual capacity for current programs:
- More than 550,000 Model 3/Model Y vehicles in California.
- More than 950,000 Model 3/Model Y vehicles in Shanghai.
- More than 375,000 Model Y vehicles in Berlin.
- More than 250,000 Model Y vehicles in Texas.
- More than 125,000 Cybertrucks in Texas.
Those figures describe existing production programs, not Model 2 capacity. Tesla’s investor-relations archive contains 2026 quarterly disclosures, but the materials reviewed through September 30 still do not identify an officially named, orderable Model 2.

What the 2026 reports actually say
Reuters’ April 2026 report supports a directional conclusion: Tesla was working on a smaller, less expensive EV. It does not establish that production had been approved or that the car would be called Model 2.

Using elements of current platforms and factories could reduce engineering and tooling expense. A smaller, lighter vehicle and a smaller battery could lower material cost, but those are reported development approaches rather than Tesla-certified specifications.

Elon Musk disputed Reuters’ 2024 cancellation account on X. That dispute should not be confused with a product launch announcement: Reuters’ later reporting still described the original all-new project as shelved while more-affordable models remained under discussion.
Price, range and specifications: what is known?
Nothing below should be read as a confirmed Model 2 specification. Tesla has not published the data needed to price or compare the car with confidence.

Even if a compact Tesla eventually reaches showrooms, its usable range will depend on battery size, wheel and tire choices, software limits, temperature and driving conditions. An estimated number cannot substitute for an EPA certification and a final trim sheet.
Platform, factories and production questions
Tesla’s affordable-car strategy has moved among three concepts: a clean-sheet next-generation platform, vehicles using aspects of current platforms, and a smaller EV built to reduce cost through size and battery capacity. The company has not settled publicly on one architecture or identified a production sequence.

Tesla’s current capacity disclosures name factories and programs for vehicles already in production or preparation. They do not assign a plant, line or annual volume to a Model 2. Until Tesla identifies a factory and begins publishing regulatory and ordering information, claims about a specific launch site are speculation.
Should you wait for a Model 2 or buy a Model 3 or Model Y?
The decision depends less on the rumored $25,000 number than on whether you need a car on a known schedule. Model 3 and Model Y are established Tesla product lines with ordering and delivery processes; the Model 2 cannot yet be scored on certified price, range, safety or availability.

Waiting may make sense when

Buying now is more defensible when
- You need dependable transportation by a particular date.
- Your household needs a known sedan or crossover size, cargo layout or seating arrangement.
- You are comparing a real purchase price and delivery slot rather than a rumor.
- Financing, incentives, charging access or a trade-in make timing important.
What would confirm that the Model 2 is real?
Before treating the vehicle as available, look for all of the following from Tesla or a regulator:
- An official Tesla product name and dedicated product page.
- A market-specific configurator showing trims and a purchase price.
- An EPA certification or equivalent official range figure for the relevant region.
- Published dimensions, battery information, charging specifications and warranty terms.
- A factory or production announcement tied to the vehicle.
- An actual order-opening date and a delivery estimate.
- Independent safety-test results or a regulatory safety record.
Until those items appear, references to “the $25,000 Tesla” describe an aspiration or reported development effort, not a car you can order.
Bottom line
As of September 30, 2026, the Tesla Model 2 is an unofficial name for a possible lower-cost compact EV, not a confirmed Tesla product. Reuters reporting indicates that Tesla has continued working on a smaller, cheaper model after shelving the original all-new $25,000 plan, but the company has not confirmed the name, price, range, battery, factory, safety rating or launch date. Buyers who need certainty should evaluate an available Model 3 or Model Y; everyone else should wait for Tesla’s official product page, certification and order opening before treating the Model 2 as real or affordable.
