Honda has canceled three planned North American electric vehicles, but it has not announced a permanent exit from EVs. The March 2026 decision ends the planned Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX launches. Honda says it will instead put more near-term resources into hybrids while continuing longer-term EV platform and battery work. Whether that leaves the company able to compete when demand grows is still an open question—not a settled consequence of the cancellations.
What Honda canceled—and why
On March 12, 2026, Honda announced it had canceled development and market launch of three EVs planned for North American production: the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX. Honda said that launching them in the current environment, where it said EV demand was declining significantly, would likely create further long-term losses. It described the move as part of a reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy. Honda’s March 12 announcement

Honda attributed the decision to a mix of market changes and shortcomings of its own. The company cited slower U.S. EV market growth amid easing fossil-fuel regulations and changes to incentives. It also said Chinese buyers were shifting toward software-based features and faster-moving EV manufacturers, and acknowledged that Honda had not offered better value for money than newer competitors. Honda further cited tariff effects on gasoline and hybrid profitability and weaker product competitiveness in Asia after resources had been directed toward EV development. These are Honda’s explanations, not independently established findings.

The announced financial exposure is an estimate, not a final loss
Honda gave a preliminary maximum estimate of up to ¥2.5 trillion in total expenses and losses related to the strategy reassessment, including potential losses in later fiscal years. The company said the estimate reflected information available on March 12, 2026, included risks and uncertainties, and could differ from amounts ultimately recorded. It should not be read as a finalized loss figure. Honda’s March 12 announcement

What Honda plans to prioritize instead
More hybrids in the near term
In its May 14, 2026 business briefing, Honda said it would reallocate more development and production resources to hybrids, which it described as being in high demand. It planned to begin launching next-generation hybrids in 2027 and aims to introduce 15 models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030. Honda also said it planned to convert excess capacity at its Ohio plant to gasoline and hybrid production and make all its North American auto plants capable of producing hybrids. These are plans, not completed launches or conversions. Honda’s May 2026 business briefing Honda’s May 2026 strategy account
EV work continues, but with a different horizon and footprint
Honda says it will continue groundwork for a competitive EV hardware platform and research and development of all-solid-state batteries. In Japan, it plans to expand EVs mainly in the mini-vehicle category, including an N-BOX EV scheduled for 2028. For China, the May briefing described new-energy vehicles developed with local partners. Those plans differ in commitment from the canceled North American launches: platform groundwork and battery research are not products announced for sale, and regional plans do not guarantee a launch date or commercial success. Honda President Toshihiro Mibe described the longer-term approach this way: “As for EVs, Honda will continue laying the groundwork for introducing a highly competitive EV hardware platform so that Honda will be well prepared to meet demand when it emerges, while also continuing research and development of all-solid-state batteries.” Honda’s May 2026 strategy account

Honda had already reduced its planned electrification investment before canceling the three models. In May 2025, it lowered planned investment through FY2031 from ¥10 trillion to ¥7 trillion, citing postponement of a Canada EV value-chain project and changed timing for dedicated EV plants. At the time, Honda still called the 0 Series a main pillar of its future EV business; the following year, it canceled the 0 SUV and 0 Saloon. The sequence points to a change in pace and resource allocation: Honda moved from presenting the 0 Series as a central future EV program to canceling those North American products and emphasizing hybrids. It does not establish that Honda has abandoned every EV effort or that it can no longer compete. The company itself acknowledged a value-for-money weakness against newer EV makers, but the available announcements do not provide independent comparative data on products, costs or market share with which to measure that gap.

The headline’s first claim is accurate if “killing its EVs” means ending these three planned North American models. The broader claim—that Honda has killed any chance of future competition—goes beyond what the company has announced. Honda retains EV platform preparation, solid-state battery R&D, Japan’s planned N-BOX EV and China partnerships, while shifting near-term investment and production capacity toward hybrids.
Those retained activities are not equivalent to launching a competitive vehicle. A platform program, battery research project or regional plan only establishes ongoing work; it does not show that Honda will deliver a compelling EV at the right price, on schedule, or at scale. Honda’s own statements describe its intended direction, not independent proof that its strategy will succeed. Its ability to compete will depend on what products emerge from that work and how they compare when they reach customers—outcomes not established by the announcements to date.
