Honda and General Motors ended their planned affordable-EV program in October 2023, about a year and a half after announcing it. Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the project had proved difficult to make work as a business. The decision canceled that co-development plan—not every Honda EV and not every Honda-GM collaboration.
What was Honda and GM’s affordable-EV plan?
Announced on April 5, 2022, the program was meant to develop a global electric-vehicle architecture using GM’s next-generation Ultium battery technology. Honda and GM said they aimed to begin global production of millions of EVs in 2027, with compact crossovers among the planned vehicles and North America, South America and China among the key markets. Their stated goal was to combine the companies’ technology, design, sourcing and manufacturing scale to make EVs more affordable. Honda’s 2022 announcement described a target, not vehicles that ultimately entered production.
Why did Honda cancel the plan?
Honda and GM mutually discontinued the program in October 2023 after extensive study and analysis. Mibe gave the business rationale in an interview with Bloomberg, quoted by Ars Technica on October 25, 2023: “After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment we are ending development of an affordable EV.”
The companies’ joint statement, quoted in the same report, said: “After extensive studies and analysis, we have come to a mutual decision to discontinue the program. Each company remains committed to affordability in the EV market.” The available statements do not identify one exclusive cause, such as battery costs or cell supply, so those should not be treated as confirmed explanations.

Did Honda cancel all its electric cars or end every collaboration with GM?
No. The 2023 announcement concerned the affordable-EV co-development program. At the time, the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX were separate EV projects proceeding with GM, and the companies continued other forms of collaboration. The canceled program’s proposed vehicles should not be confused with those models.
A later change affected a different joint effort: on January 20, 2026, Honda said it would stop production before the end of that year of the current fuel-cell system made at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, its joint venture with GM. Honda said it planned to use a next-generation fuel-cell system developed independently. That production decision did not erase the companies’ earlier collaboration.

How was Honda’s 2026 EV cancellation different?
On March 12, 2026, Honda separately canceled development and planned market launches of three North American EVs: the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX. These were not the affordable vehicles contemplated in the 2022 GM partnership. Honda cited a strategic reassessment and changed business conditions, including significantly declining EV demand and intensifying competition in China. Its March 2026 announcement said it would reassess resource allocation, strengthen hybrid models in response to slower U.S. EV-market growth, and pursue future EV introductions flexibly while monitoring profitability and market trends.
| Decision | What was affected | Stated rationale | What Honda said it would pursue |

| October 2023 | The Honda-GM affordable-EV co-development program announced in 2022 | Mibe said the project was difficult as a business; the companies cited extensive study and analysis. | The joint statement said both companies remained committed to affordability in the EV market. |

Is Honda still making EVs?
Honda’s stated direction as of its May 2026 briefing was to put greater emphasis on hybrids while retaining selected EV plans. The company said it planned to launch 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030, prioritizing North America. It also described a Japan-market N-BOX EV planned for 2028. These are future plans and may change; they do not amount to a complete withdrawal from EVs. Honda’s May 2026 briefing sets out those plans.
What does Honda’s ¥2.5 trillion loss estimate cover?
Honda estimated that losses from its broader electrification-strategy reassessment could reach up to ¥2.5 trillion. The preliminary company estimate covers the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026 and the next fiscal year or later; Honda said actual losses could differ. It is not a final realized amount and is not an estimate for the 2023 affordable-EV program alone. Honda’s SEC-hosted filing provides context for the wider reassessment.
