There is no universal winner between the Honda ADV160 and Yamaha NMAX. Choose the ADV160 if your roads include rough pavement, steep driveways or light gravel and you value its adventure-style equipment. Choose the NMAX if most of your riding is urban commuting and you prefer Yamaha’s compact city-scooter concept. Before comparing prices or specifications, match the country, model year and trim: the Japan-market ADV160 is 156cc, while the Japan-market 2025 NMAX ABS is 124cc.
The figures below use official Japan-market information as the clearest like-for-like reference, then identify important U.S. and Philippines differences. They are manufacturer specifications and product descriptions, not the result of an independent head-to-head road test. Sit on both scooters and arrange local test rides before ordering.

Start with the right country and trim
“Yamaha NMAX” is not one globally identical scooter. Yamaha’s Japan release dated March 10, 2025 covers a 124cc NMAX ABS, while NMAX versions sold elsewhere can have different engines, dimensions, equipment and prices. Honda’s Japan ADV160 listing describes a 156cc model; American Honda’s 2026 specification sheet describes a 157cc U.S. version and labels its figures preliminary.
For that reason, this article treats the Japan-market listings as the numerical baseline. The Japan ADV160 specifications were current in April 2026 when Honda’s page was checked on October 13, 2026. Yamaha’s Japan NMAX price and specification page was checked on the same date. If you are buying in the United States, the Philippines or another country, use the local distributor’s sheet and dealer quote instead of transferring Japanese numbers.

What each scooter is intended to be
Honda ADV160: an adventure-themed commuter
Honda presents the ADV160 as an adventure-style scooter. That positioning is useful when your daily route includes broken asphalt, patched utility cuts, unpaved parking areas or occasional light gravel. It does not prove that the ADV160 handles every surface better than the NMAX, but it explains why a buyer may prefer its visual design and equipment brief over a conventional urban scooter.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The Japan ADV160 weighs 137kg, has a 780mm seat and carries 8.1L of fuel according to Honda’s published specifications. Those numbers help you assess garage maneuvering, trailer or lift limits and whether both feet can reach the ground, but they do not predict comfort for every rider. Leg length, inseam, seat width and handlebar position matter as much as seat-height figures.
Yamaha NMAX: a compact city commuter
Yamaha describes the Japan NMAX ABS as a city commuter that combines MAX-series styling and sporty riding character in a compact body. That makes it the more natural starting point for riders whose priorities are paved streets, traffic filtering, parking convenience and a familiar urban format.

Yamaha says its 2025 update refined the engine, changed front and rear suspension settings with comfort and bump absorption in mind, refreshed the styling and redesigned the LCD meter. These are Yamaha’s product-development claims, not independent measurements of acceleration, ride quality or fuel use. A local test ride is still necessary, especially if your roads have potholes or speed humps.
Engine size: what the Japan comparison really tells you
The Japan versions are not equal-displacement competitors. The ADV160’s 156cc engine is 32cc larger than the NMAX ABS’s 124cc engine. Honda also publishes 12kW at 8,500rpm and 15Nm at 6,500rpm for its Japan model. Yamaha’s cited Japan release does not provide matching output figures in the material used here.
Recommended Free Tools
A larger displacement can be relevant when you regularly carry a passenger, climb long grades or ride on faster roads, but displacement alone cannot establish a real-world performance winner. Final drive gearing, rider weight, payload, engine calibration, aerodynamic drag and local speed limits all affect how a scooter feels. Do not treat Honda’s output numbers as a direct test result against an unavailable Yamaha figure.
The U.S. comparison requires additional care. American Honda identifies its 2026 ADV160 as 157cc, so the Japanese 156cc label should not be copied into a U.S. listing. Confirm the NMAX engine offered by your local Yamaha distributor before deciding that the Honda and Yamaha are comparable on capacity.
Suspension, clearance and imperfect roads
If your route includes rough surfaces, ask the dealer to explain the exact suspension specification for your market and trim. Yamaha specifically says the 2025 NMAX received revised front and rear suspension settings intended to improve comfort and bump absorption. Honda’s adventure-style positioning suggests a different use case, but the cited Japan page does not provide a directly comparable ground-clearance figure.

Honda Philippines’ January 19, 2026 release lists 165mm of ground clearance for the ADV160 it describes. That is a Philippines-market release figure and must not be transferred automatically to the Japanese, U.S. or other versions. The same release reports 45.0km/L WMTC for its model, different from Honda Japan’s 42.5km/L WMTC listing.
For a rough-road decision, inspect more than the brochure:
- Ride over the largest speed hump on your normal route at a safe speed and listen for bottoming.
- Check whether your feet can stabilize the scooter on a cambered or uneven stop.
- Look at the windscreen adjustment range and whether it blocks your view when standing or leaning forward.
- Ask about tire sizes, replacement availability and the recommended load limit for your exact trim.
Equipment that changes daily use
Safety and rider aids
Honda Philippines describes ABS and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) on its ADV160 release. It also identifies a TFT display on the RoadSync type. These items are trim- and market-specific, so a Philippines specification cannot be assumed for a Japan or U.S. scooter. Ask the dealer whether ABS is fitted to both wheels, whether traction control is standard or optional and which display type is included.
Connectivity and instruments
Honda’s Japan page describes RoadSync connectivity for the ADV160. Yamaha’s 2025 NMAX announcement highlights a redesigned LCD meter and its Smart Motor Generator System. Connectivity is useful only if your phone, helmet audio setup and local app support work as expected; compare the exact functions, mounting provisions and controls rather than choosing on the word “connected.”
Storage, charging and wind protection
The Honda Philippines release lists 30L of under-seat luggage, USB-C charging, an adjustable windscreen and a smart key for the described ADV160 version. Those are valuable commuting features, but the release does not establish that every ADV160 trim worldwide has all of them. Measure your helmet and daily bag at the dealership and confirm whether the USB-C port, screen and smart key are standard on the vehicle you are signing for.

Yamaha’s cited Japan material does not provide a matching under-seat volume, charging specification or windscreen description. Treat those cells as open questions, not as evidence that the NMAX lacks the equipment. Request the local owner’s manual or official specification sheet before comparing practicality.
Fuel economy: compare test cycles, not marketing impressions
Honda Japan lists 42.5km/L WMTC for its ADV160 and warns that actual consumption varies with weather, traffic, riding style, vehicle condition and maintenance. Honda Philippines lists 45.0km/L WMTC for the model in its January 2026 release. The difference illustrates why you should not combine figures from different markets or versions.
No matched NMAX fuel-consumption figure was established in the cited Yamaha material. Therefore neither scooter can be declared the fuel-economy winner from these sources. For your own budget, multiply the local test-cycle figure by your expected annual distance, then add a margin for stop-and-go traffic, cold starts, passenger use and tire-pressure errors. A dealer demonstration route will reveal throttle response and stop-start behavior, but it is not a controlled economy test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and the cost of actually owning one
Yamaha Japan lists the NMAX ABS at ¥389,400 including Japan’s 10% consumption tax. Yamaha expressly excludes some insurance, taxes and registration-related costs. The cited material does not establish a same-market Honda Japan price, so that Yamaha figure cannot be used to claim that the NMAX is cheaper than the ADV160.

- Vehicle price for the identical model year and trim.
- Freight, preparation, registration, plates and local taxes.
- Mandatory insurance and any optional coverage you intend to carry.
- Scheduled service intervals, labor rates and consumables.
- Replacement tires, brake components, drive-belt service and battery access.
- Accessories you actually need, such as a top box, rack, hand guards or a taller screen.
Also compare dealer distance, parts availability, roadside support and warranty terms. The source material does not establish warranty periods or service pricing for a single global market, so obtain those details in writing from local dealers.
Comfort and fit: numbers are only a screening tool
The ADV160’s published 780mm seat height and 137kg curb weight let you predict whether lifting it off the side stand or pushing it into a parking space may be manageable. They cannot tell you whether the seat edge presses into your thighs, whether your knees fit behind the handlebar or whether the reach to the controls is relaxed.
During each test ride, use the same checks:
- Wear the shoes and riding gear you normally use.
- Place both feet down at a stop, then try a one-foot stop on each side.
- Turn the bars fully at walking pace and check wrist, knee and mirror clearance.
- Ride over your normal road defects and note impacts without assuming one short ride proves long-term comfort.
- Try the under-seat compartment with your helmet, lock and rain layer.
- Repeat the route with the passenger, if two-up riding is part of your plan.
A practical buying decision
Choose the ADV160 when these conditions fit
- Your roads regularly include potholes, broken edges, steep ramps or occasional unpaved sections.
- You want the adventure-style design and are willing to verify the local suspension, clearance and equipment package.
- The local version’s displacement, traction-control availability, storage and windscreen meet your passenger and cargo needs.
- The Honda dealer network and parts access are stronger or more convenient in your area.
- You can live with the price and running costs after adding registration, insurance and accessories.
Choose the NMAX when these conditions fit
- Your riding is overwhelmingly on paved city streets and you value a compact commuter format.
- The local NMAX trim offers the engine size and braking equipment required for your roads and licensing rules.
- You prefer Yamaha’s updated LCD meter, Smart Motor Generator System and the 2025 suspension and styling changes described by Yamaha.
- The NMAX has the better local price, dealer support or parts availability once all on-road charges are included.
- The seat, floorboard, controls and storage fit you better in a back-to-back test ride.
Five steps before you place a deposit
- Write down the exact vehicles. Record country, model year, trim, engine displacement and whether ABS, traction control, connectivity, charging and smart-key equipment are standard.
- Get two written out-the-door quotes. Ask each dealer to itemize taxes, registration, freight, insurance requirements and every fee.
- Verify the ownership plan. Obtain warranty length, service intervals, labor rates, belt and tire replacement guidance, and the nearest authorized service location.
- Test both on the same day if possible. Use the same gear, route, speed range and cargo load so your impressions are comparable.
- Confirm accessory fitment. Honda directs buyers to model-specific genuine accessories and parts; verify compatibility with your exact model year and market before paying for a screen, rack or luggage system.
Do not let a video title or a single specification settle the decision. A Philippines comparison video may frame the choice around price, performance, comfort, features and fuel use, but a video result is not a controlled test and does not replace local pricing or your own fit check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerdict
For a buyer in Japan comparing the listed models, the ADV160 is the larger-displacement, adventure-positioned option with published 12kW and 15Nm outputs, while the 124cc NMAX ABS is Yamaha’s compact city commuter with a 2025 engine, suspension, styling and LCD update. That is a role distinction, not proof that one is faster, more comfortable or more economical in every situation.
Buy the ADV160 when its rough-road intent, available local equipment and fit solve problems on your route. Buy the NMAX when urban compactness, Yamaha’s local specification and total ownership quote suit you better. In every market, the correct answer is the exact trim you can comfortably control, properly service and afford after all on-road costs—not the badge with the stronger brochure claim.
