For the U.S. 2018–2022 Honda Accord, the 1.5-liter turbo makes a persuasive case for downsizing: Honda rated it at 192 hp and 192 lb-ft, with peak torque available across a broad 1,600–5,000-rpm range. That is strong published output for a small engine, but it is not proof of a universal real-world performance or reliability advantage. Whether it is the right Accord depends on the model year, trim, transmission, and what you value in everyday driving.
What does “downsizing” mean in the Accord 1.5T?
In this context, downsizing means using a smaller-displacement engine and turbocharging to produce output comparable to, or greater than, a larger naturally aspirated engine. Honda’s U.S. 2018 Accord specifications provide a clear illustration:
| Engine | Displacement | Published horsepower | Published peak torque | Torque peak |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accord 1.5T | 1,498 cc | 192 hp | 192 lb-ft | 1,600–5,000 rpm |
| Previous Accord 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder | 2,356 cc | 185 hp | 181 lb-ft | 3,900 rpm |
These figures are American Honda’s published specifications, not a controlled comparison of acceleration or fuel use. They show how turbocharging lets the smaller engine deliver higher rated output and a broader rated torque range; they do not establish that it will feel faster in every situation.
How Honda designed the 1.5-liter turbo
Honda identifies the tenth-generation U.S. Accord’s engine as the L15BE with VTEC. Its design combines direct fuel injection, a low-inertia mono-scroll turbocharger with an electric wastegate, dual Variable Timing Control (VTC), and VTEC variable valve lift on the exhaust side. Honda also describes a 4-into-2 exhaust-manifold arrangement that separates cylinders 1 and 4 from 2 and 3, saying it smooths exhaust flow to the turbo and helps low-rpm response. These are manufacturer explanations of the design, not independent test findings.

American Honda’s May 16, 2024 engine overview says, “The 1.5-liter Turbo used in the Accord (L15BE with VTEC®) is similar to the version powering the CR-V.” The overview also reports 20.2 psi of turbo boost for the Accord L15BE. That boost figure and Honda’s description of the engine family are manufacturer technical information; the overview covers multiple Accord generations, so do not apply every detail to every model year. The later 2023-and-newer Accord 1.5T, for example, has a different stated torque-band starting point.
Power, fuel economy, and transmission
For the U.S. tenth-generation Accord application, Honda lists 192 hp at 5,500 rpm and 192 lb-ft from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm. Honda’s 2020 U.S. Accord guide specifies regular unleaded fuel for this engine. Keep those details tied to the relevant U.S. model-year application rather than treating them as universal across markets or generations.

The 1.5T was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT); the 2018 Sport could also be ordered with a six-speed manual. Published 2018 U.S. EPA ratings vary by trim and transmission:
| 2018 Accord 1.5T trim and transmission | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| LX, EX, and EX-L CVT | 30 mpg | 38 mpg | 33 mpg |
| Sport and Touring CVT | 29 mpg | 35 mpg | 31 mpg |
| Sport six-speed manual | 26 mpg | 35 mpg | 30 mpg |
These are U.S. EPA ratings published by American Honda in 2017 for the 2018 model year, not a promise of the mileage a particular owner will achieve. Honda notes that actual mileage varies with driving, maintenance, and conditions. Do not use a single figure as the rating for every 1.5T Accord.

- High Quality — The internal temperature and pressure of a turbocharger are relatively high, requiring it to adapt to high-speed operation. Additionally, turbochargers are exposed to various corrosive substances in the gas. Therefore, materials with excellent high-temperature and high-pressure resistance, sufficient strength and toughness, as well as good corrosion resistance are selected.
- Excellent Performance — A new turbocharger can improve fuel economy. By harnessing the energy from exhaust gases to compress the intake air, it enhances the engine's combustion efficiency, reduces fuel consumption, and ultimately lowers fuel costs.
- Quality Assurance — You can enjoy a 24-month warranty in our shop.
How the 1.5T compares with the 2.0T
The 1.5T and 2.0T were distinct powertrain choices, not simply two trims of the same engine. The U.S. 2018 lineup paired the 1.5T with a CVT, with a six-speed manual available on Sport. The 2.0T used a ten-speed automatic, or a six-speed manual in Sport. A sensible comparison starts with the published output and economy for the exact year and trim, then considers whether you prefer a CVT or manual and which trim equipment you want. The evidence here does not support declaring one the better choice for every buyer.
Maintenance: follow the car’s Maintenance Minder
Honda says Maintenance Minder uses operating conditions—including oil and coolant temperature and engine speed—to determine service intervals. The 2018 press kit says oil-change intervals can extend to a maximum of 10,000 miles depending on those conditions. That is Honda’s description of the system, not a fixed interval for every driver. Follow the in-car minder and the owner’s manual for your specific model year and use conditions.

The cited recall repair procedure includes engine-oil replacement but does not establish a universal oil grade or capacity for the Accord 1.5T. Check the owner’s manual for the correct specification and amount for your car’s year and market rather than choosing oil by engine name alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the Accord 1.5T have an oil-dilution campaign?
The Honda oil-dilution technical communication identified here concerns specified 2017–2018 CR-V and 2016–2018 Civic vehicles, with stated coverage tied to certain cold-weather states and driving conditions. It does not establish that the Accord 1.5T was included in those campaigns. The fact that models share an engine family is not enough to transfer a campaign’s applicability or to claim an Accord-specific defect rate.

Check the fuel-pump recall by VIN
Honda Safety Recall Bulletin 24-009, version 3, dated November 15, 2024, lists all trims of 2018–2022 Accord 1.5T as potentially covered, subject to VIN eligibility. Honda says a defective fuel-pump impeller may swell and seize the pump, potentially causing loss of motive power or a stall while driving. The stated corrective action is replacement of the fuel-pump motor. Honda directs owners and dealers to check the VIN; model and year alone do not confirm that a particular car is eligible or that its repair remains open.
- Get the vehicle’s VIN from the car or its documents.
- Check recall status with Honda or an authorized dealer before purchase or continued use.
- If the vehicle is eligible, confirm with the dealer whether the repair is complete and obtain the repair record.
A recall bulletin does not establish the repair status of an individual used car. Ask for VIN-specific confirmation and service documentation.
Is the Honda Accord 1.5T a good engine?
On the evidence available here, it is a well-specified downsized powertrain: Honda paired a 1.5-liter engine with turbocharging and valve-control technology, rated it at 192 hp and 192 lb-ft for the tenth-generation U.S. Accord, and offered transmission choices that varied by trim. Its published figures make the case for useful output from modest displacement; EPA figures show why the exact trim and gearbox matter when comparing efficiency.
Those specifications do not settle long-term reliability. The sources cited here provide no independent long-term reliability rate or Accord 1.5T failure-frequency study. A particular car’s maintenance history and VIN-specific recall status are more useful than inferring reliability from engine size, one recall bulletin, or campaigns documented for other Honda models.
