Ferrari traces its Prancing Horse to aviator Francesco Baracca: according to the company, Baracca’s family suggested that Enzo Ferrari adopt the symbol. It first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari cars in 1932—not on a Ferrari-built road car—and Enzo Ferrari added the yellow background associated with his hometown, Modena.
Why does Ferrari use a prancing horse?
Ferrari’s account links the emblem to Francesco Baracca, an Italian First World War fighter pilot associated with a prancing-horse motif. The company says Baracca’s family suggested that Enzo Ferrari use the horse. Ferrari places their meeting in 1923, but that is part of the origin story—not the date the emblem first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari cars. Ferrari’s account of the emblem’s return recounts this connection.
The horse’s deeper provenance before Baracca is less certain. Museo Baracca describes differing interpretations, so it is more accurate to present the Baracca connection as Ferrari’s explanation than to claim a conclusively established ancient or heraldic origin. Museo Baracca’s history of the Prancing Horse discusses those interpretations.
When did the Ferrari emblem first appear?
Ferrari dates the Prancing Horse’s debut on Scuderia Ferrari cars to 1932, at the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours on 9 July. The cars were Alfa Romeos entered by Scuderia Ferrari. The emblem therefore identified the racing team; it was not debuting on a Ferrari-manufactured car. Ferrari’s retrospective says the horse appeared on the team’s cars that year and describes the original shield as carrying a yellow field, the team initials and the Italian tricolour at the top.

Why is the Ferrari logo yellow?
Enzo Ferrari chose yellow for the background and connected it to Modena, his hometown. Ferrari reproduces his explanation: “the Cavallino was and has remained black. I added the Canary yellow background which is the colour of Modena.” The horse is black; the yellow field is a separate part of the emblem’s design. Ferrari revisited that connection in its feature on yellow and the marque’s origins: A splash of yellow for Scuderia Ferrari.
How did the logo change over time?
1932: the racing shield
The first Scuderia Ferrari emblem was a shield combining the horse with a yellow background, Italian colours and team initials. That combination made it a racing-team badge, rather than simply a horse symbol.

1945–1947: a refined horse and official logo
Museo Baracca reports that artist Eligio Gerosa redrew the horse in 1945 and designed the official Scuderia Ferrari logo in 1947. This account helps explain the development between the early racing emblem and later uses. Ferrari, meanwhile, describes the 1932 emblem as essentially similar to the current one; the two accounts are compatible when the history is understood as refinement and the use of different formats, rather than a wholly unrelated replacement. Museo Baracca provides the dates for Gerosa’s work.
Later and current forms
Ferrari’s filings distinguish several related brand marks: the Ferrari word mark and logotype, the standalone Prancing Horse, a rectangular yellow badge bearing Ferrari lettering, and a racing shield with SF initials. The horse is the best-known symbol, but “the Ferrari logo” can refer to more than one layout. The shield and rectangle are not interchangeable names for the same badge. Ferrari says the current emblem remains essentially similar to the original, while the format used depends on the brand context.

What is the difference between the Ferrari shield and the rectangular badge?
| Format | What it includes | Typical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Racing shield | Prancing Horse, yellow field, Italian colours and SF initials | Associated with Scuderia Ferrari racing identity |
| Rectangular badge | Yellow field, Prancing Horse and Ferrari lettering | Uses the Ferrari name rather than the SF initials |
| Standalone horse | Prancing Horse without the full shield or rectangular layout | A separate protected brand mark |
| Word mark or logotype | Ferrari name in its branded lettering | The name itself, not the horse emblem |
These distinctions follow Ferrari’s descriptions of its protected marks; they do not imply that one format replaced all the others.

- Ferrari dates the emblem’s first appearance on Scuderia Ferrari cars to 1932, on Alfa Romeos entered by the team.
- Ferrari attributes the horse to the Baracca family’s suggestion to Enzo Ferrari and the yellow field to Modena.
- Museo Baracca reports Gerosa’s 1945 redrawing of the horse and his 1947 design of the official Scuderia Ferrari logo.
- The available historical accounts do not establish one definitive pre-Baracca origin for the horse motif.
Ferrari’s modern store lists logo-bearing gifts and collectibles, including Prancing Horse motifs, but a current product is merchandise rather than evidence of the exact badge fitted to a historic car. Availability varies by product. See Ferrari’s gifts and collectibles.
