The company dates the Servi-Car’s unveiling to November 1931; its first modern retail touring trike, the Tri Glide Ultra Classic, arrived in 2009. Between those milestones came two prototypes—the Trihawk and Penster—that never reached showrooms. Harley-Davidson’s published history does not explain why they were abandoned, so the “mystery” is an unanswered question, not evidence of a hidden event.
When did Harley-Davidson start making trikes?
Harley-Davidson’s account begins in November 1931, when company president Walter Davidson unveiled the Servi-Car. Harley-Davidson Insurance’s history page describes it as a business vehicle, initially used by car dealerships for cross-town deliveries. That makes the Servi-Car the start of the company’s documented three-wheel history—but it served a different purpose from today’s touring trikes.
What was the Servi-Car used for?
The Servi-Car was designed around dealership work. A dealer could use its optional tow bar to have one employee deliver a car to a customer, while the cargo box could carry tools or advertise the business. Its practical layout reflected a commercial need rather than a focus on passenger comfort or long-distance touring.
Harley-Davidson Insurance says the model remained in the lineup for 41 years, continuing with a flathead engine until 1973. The same page calls it Harley-Davidson’s first motorcycle with an electric starter, one year before the 1965 Electra Glide. These are claims from the company’s history account; the page does not provide original engineering records or a publication date.

What happened between the Servi-Car and the retail touring trikes?
After the Servi-Car era, Harley-Davidson’s trikes were aftermarket conversions or owner-built, chopped motorcycles for a period the company’s history page describes as 35 years. The company also reports two factory prototypes: the Trihawk in the 1980s and the Penster in 2006. Neither became a showroom model.
In 2009, Harley-Davidson introduced the Tri Glide Ultra Classic as a trike for everyday riders. Its flat-tread rear tires, storage and touring equipment represented a consumer touring role distinct from the Servi-Car’s delivery work. Harley-Davidson’s Touring history says the Touring frames were redesigned for model year 2009 with modular segments that could also be used in Trike frames. That is useful platform context, but the company’s account does not provide a component-by-component engineering timeline for the Tri Glide launch.

What remains unexplained?
The company’s published history identifies the Trihawk and Penster as prototypes that did not reach production, but it does not explain why. It offers no documented development chronology, cancellation rationale, sales figures or account of a specific event behind either project. The available facts therefore establish that the prototypes existed and did not reach showrooms; they do not establish a distinct hidden mystery.
Harley-Davidson’s later Touring history describes Project Rushmore as a comprehensive 2014 Touring redesign. Its changes included weight reduction, Boom! Box infotainment, one-touch saddlebag operation, redesigned aerodynamics and Twin-Cooled engines on selected models. Those changes provide context for the touring family, but they should not be read as features added to every trike.

How do Harley-Davidson’s current trikes differ?
The available US model-year pages show two approaches rather than a complete same-year specification comparison: the 2025 Tri Glide Ultra is presented as a long-haul touring trike, while the 2026 Road Glide 3 brings Road Glide styling and updated technology to the three-wheel line.
| Detail | 2025 Tri Glide Ultra (US) | 2026 Road Glide 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Long-haul touring, according to Harley-Davidson. | Road Glide styling and updated technology in the three-wheel line, according to Harley-Davidson. |
| Engine | Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114. | Milwaukee-Eight VVT 117. |
| Power and torque claims | 120 ft-lb of torque and 93 hp, as manufacturer-published specifications. | Not stated in the cited product highlights. |
| Infotainment | Not stated in the cited specifications. | Skyline OS with a 12.3-inch display. |
| Rear suspension | Not stated in the cited specifications. | Redesigned de Dion-style suspension replaces the traditional live axle. Harley-Davidson says it reduces unsprung weight by about 68 lb and more than doubles wheel travel to 5 inches. |
| Storage and weight | 6.8 cu ft luggage capacity; 1,237 lb running weight. | Not stated in the cited product highlights. |
| Fuel and dimensions | 6-gallon fuel capacity; 65.7-inch wheelbase. | Not stated in the cited product highlights. |
| Fuel economy | Estimated 42 mpg, as a manufacturer-published estimate. | Not stated in the cited product highlights. |
The Tri Glide figures are manufacturer-published specifications for the 2025 US model, not independent test results or universal values. The Road Glide 3 suspension figures are Harley-Davidson’s claims, not independently measured findings. These pages cover different model years and provide different levels of detail, so the table does not establish a full like-for-like performance comparison.

For the 2024 trike range, Harley-Davidson’s owner’s manual says specifications, equipment and designs may change without notice; it also notes that certification values can vary by market and directs owners to certification documents or a dealer for recognized specifications. Check the page and documentation for the exact model year and market when a current specification matters.
