History and Evolution of the Aston Martin V12 Engine

Aston Martin’s production V12 began with the 1999 DB7 Vantage and evolved through distinct naturally aspirated and twin-turbo flagship engines.

Aston Martin’s production V12 arrived in the 1999 DB7 Vantage: a naturally aspirated 6.0-litre engine rated at 420 bhp. From there, the company developed distinct V12 versions for the Vanquish, DB9 and later flagships. The line has since moved from naturally aspirated 6.0-litre engines to a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 in the current-generation Vanquish. These are related milestones, not one unchanged engine: displacement, hardware and output vary by model and year.

When did Aston Martin first make a production V12?

The first production Aston Martin V12 appeared in the DB7 Vantage, which debuted in March 1999. Its all-new, naturally aspirated 6.0-litre engine was rated at 420 bhp. Aston Martin’s account says the launch engine was built by Cosworth at Wellingborough; the DB7 Vantage could be ordered with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Aston Martin later offered its Touchtronic automatic system.

The engine’s development programme is described in manufacturer material as covering 500,000 miles across Europe and North America, in temperatures from −30°C to +45°C. Aston Martin also reported continuous 48-hour high-speed running at 165 mph and 30 days of accelerated durability testing at MIRA, which it said was equivalent to 100,000 miles of regular driving. These are the company’s reported test figures, not independently verified results. Aston Martin Media: DB7 V12 Vantage

DB7 GT and GTA: later output differences

The DB7 GT manual, introduced in 2002, was rated at 435 bhp; the automatic DB7 GTA was rated at 420 bhp. Those figures apply to the respective versions, rather than every DB7 V12.

How did the V12 develop in the first Vanquish?

The 1998 Project Vantage concept preceded the production car, but it was not the first production Aston Martin with a V12. That distinction belongs to the DB7 Vantage. The production V12 Vanquish arrived in 2001 with a revised 6.0-litre V12 rated at 460 bhp. Aston Martin’s retrospective lists new inlet manifolds, camshafts, valve gear, crankshaft and exhaust compared with the DB7-era engine.

The 2004 Vanquish S raised the stated output to 520 bhp and was rated above 200 mph. Aston Martin reported that it built 2,589 V12 Vanquish cars across six production years. Aston Martin Media: Celebrating 20 years of V12 Vanquish

What changed with the DB9 and the Gaydon era?

Launched in 2003 as the DB7’s successor and the first car on Aston Martin’s VH platform, the DB9 introduced another V12 specification. Aston Martin describes it as an all-alloy, quad-overhead-cam, 48-valve unit with a displacement of 5,935cc. Its model specification lists 510 bhp at 6,500 rpm.

Later AM11 iterations are described with an output of 517 PS and up to 620 Nm. PS and bhp are different units, and the DB9’s output changed across versions and years; the 510 bhp launch-era specification should not be treated as a universal rating for every DB9. Aston Martin: DB9 (2004–2016)

How did the second-generation Vanquish revise the 6.0-litre V12?

The second-generation Vanquish, introduced in 2012, retained a naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 but brought substantial revisions. Aston Martin identifies larger throttle bodies, the company’s first use of dual variable valve timing, and new fuel pumps and air boxes. The stated output was 565 bhp, with 457 lb-ft of torque. Later Vanquish S versions reached 600 bhp.

This generation marks a different step from the first Vanquish: both used 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12s, but Aston Martin lists specific hardware changes for the later engine. Aston Martin Media: Vanquish at 25

When did Aston Martin move to a twin-turbo V12?

The flagship V12 line later shifted from naturally aspirated 6.0-litre engines to a 5.2-litre twin-turbo design. Aston Martin identifies the DBS Superleggera as a model using this engine, followed by the DBS 770 Ultimate, rated at 750 bhp. Those figures describe separate model calibrations; they do not establish one common output for every 5.2-litre V12.

Current-generation Vanquish

The current-generation Vanquish debuted in 2024 with a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 rated at 835 PS and 1,000 Nm. In a retrospective published on 25 March 2026, Aston Martin called it the most powerful flagship production model the company had produced at that time. The rating is specific to this Vanquish specification, not a general figure for the DBS or other 5.2-litre models. Aston Martin Media: Vanquish at 25
