The Hiatus Camper is a hard-sided pop-up truck camper: it travels with a low roof, then its insulated composite walls unfold to create standing room. The right configuration depends on the pickup’s size and bed, the height and sleeping space you want, and the truck’s available payload. Hiatus lists a $17,000 starting price for a mid-size shell and components, but options and build details affect the final quote.
How the Hiatus Camper unfolds
Unlike a fabric-sided pop-up, the Hiatus uses a patented insulated composite folding-wall system and an insulated lower aluminum frame. Gas struts assist the roof as the walls extend upward; when closed, the camper has a lower profile than it does when deployed. The manufacturer says one person can raise or lower it in fewer than 30 seconds. That is Hiatus’s claim, not an independently timed test.
The manufacturer lists a non-powered roof vent, windows and screens, a side access door, locking latches, Yakima tracks, and a sliding sleeping platform with cushions among the standard equipment. Exact contents should be confirmed for the specific build.
Which configuration provides the space you need?
Hiatus publishes four combinations of truck size and lower-frame style. A vertical lower frame adds interior height and sleeping-platform width in the mid-size configuration; the full-size configurations share the same published height range, while the vertical version is wider. These are manufacturer specifications, and dimensions can vary with the truck and selected features.

Hiatus says sleeping length can be customized and that the standard sleeping platform can be extended to 80 inches. Its FAQ gives standard platform widths of 50 inches for mid-size and 57 inches for full-size trucks, with vertical frames adding 11 inches. Verify the dimensions for the particular truck and order rather than assuming the listed figures apply unchanged.
Choose for both comfort and fit
- Compare the sleeping platform’s width and length with the people who will use it; the published sizes are platform dimensions, not a promise of a particular mattress arrangement.
- Consider interior height alongside sleeping width. The vertical lower frame offers more room in the mid-size configuration, while the full-size versions have the same listed height range.
- Ask Hiatus to confirm the precise build dimensions and completed weight before ordering.
Will it fit your truck and garage?
Hiatus says it has built campers for a range of mid-size and full-size pickups and can customize units for standard 5-, 6- and 8-foot bed lengths. Its FAQ describes removable J- or C-clamps that secure the camper base to the truck-bed rails. The manufacturer’s general compatibility statements do not guarantee fit for every truck, bed, rail arrangement or camper configuration, so have Hiatus verify your exact pickup.

Truck anatomy affects installed height. Hiatus says a closed camper generally rises 16–19 inches above the truck cab roof and warns that most units will not fit standard-height garages. Measure the truck with the camper installed, including any relevant roof equipment, and compare that height with the actual garage opening before buying.
Check payload, not just bed dimensions
The published shell weights are 460–490 lb for mid-size builds and 480–520 lb for full-size builds. Hiatus notes that custom interiors and extra features can change total weight. These figures are not a payload rating for your pickup: compare the completed camper’s actual weight, plus occupants, cargo and accessories, against the payload capacity for your specific truck. The manufacturer’s pages do not establish a payload figure for any particular vehicle.

What does a Hiatus Camper cost?
Hiatus’s FAQ lists a $17,000 starting price for a mid-size truck camper shell and components. This is a manufacturer-stated starting price, not a total price for every configuration. Add-ons and build choices affect the formal quote; get current pricing in writing for your truck and requested equipment.
The manufacturer describes an ordering process that begins with a $500 payment toward a required 50% security deposit. When the order is finalized for production, the buyer confirms add-ons and receives a formal quote, then pays the remainder of that 50% deposit. The balance is due on installation day. Hiatus says the security deposit is non-refundable. Confirm the current payment schedule and contract terms, as well as any applicable tax, pickup or delivery arrangements and lead time, before committing.

How setup works—and why roof cargo matters
Hiatus says one person can open or close the camper in fewer than 30 seconds. Its operating instruction is important: remove added weight from the roof racks before raising the camper. The manufacturer says the roof struts are tuned for the roof’s weight, and extra rack load can keep them from lifting properly. It warns that resulting damage or injury may affect warranty coverage. Follow the instructions for the specific unit rather than treating the speed claim as a guarantee under every condition.
Standard equipment and optional upgrades
The manufacturer lists Yakima tracks as standard and Yakima crossbars as an upgrade. Other listed options include a vertical lower frame, double rear doors, additional windows or a side door, a Batwing awning, overhead LED lights, a Maxxair fan, a Goal Zero battery package, and a propane system with a safety kit and Camco Wave 3 catalytic heater.

Options should be confirmed against the actual build and quote. Hiatus’s product details and mobile features page list different Goal Zero Yeti models—the 1500X and 1000X, respectively—so the available battery model is not established consistently on the manufacturer’s pages. Ask Hiatus which unit, if any, is included in the current build. For crossbars and any roof cargo, confirm exact track compatibility and load limits, and remove added rack weight before opening the camper as directed by the manufacturer.
Warranty and final checks
Hiatus states that it offers a two-year repair-or-replace warranty, with terms set out in the purchase service agreement. Review that agreement for the applicable coverage, conditions and exclusions before placing an order.
