A car battery that keeps going flat may be weak, undercharged, or losing power while the vehicle is parked. First check for a light or plugged-in accessory that stayed on; if nothing obvious explains it, test the battery and charging system, then have the vehicle’s parked electrical draw checked using the procedure for its exact make and model.
What commonly drains a car battery while it is parked?
Begin with things you can check without disturbing the vehicle’s wiring. A flat battery is a symptom, not proof that the battery itself is the only problem.
Lights and closures
An interior, vanity, glove-box, or cargo lamp can remain on if a door, trunk, or glove box is not fully closed. Check that each closure latches and that no light remains illuminated. Some lamps switch off after a delay, so a quick glance immediately after shutting the car down may not tell the whole story. AAA Mid States identifies lights left on as a potential battery drain.
Devices left plugged in
A phone charger, dash camera, detector, or other accessory can keep drawing power if its outlet remains live when the ignition is off. Whether a 12-volt socket shuts off with the vehicle varies by model. Unplug accessories before leaving the car parked, particularly if the battery has been going flat.

Keyless-entry fob left nearby
On some proximity-entry vehicles, a nearby key fob can keep the vehicle’s receiver active. AAA Mid States gives 15 feet as a general example, not a universal cutoff: the actual behavior depends on the vehicle. Store the fob farther away if the owner’s manual recommends it or if you are checking whether proximity is contributing to the problem.
Corrosion, accessories, or an electrical fault
Visible deposits around the battery terminals deserve attention, but corrosion alone does not establish the cause of a repeated flat battery. Chevrolet’s battery-care guidance recommends inspection and cautions against forcing terminal clamps. Aftermarket accessories or incorrect wiring may remain connected to battery power; a stuck relay, switch, module, wiring fault, or system that does not return to sleep can also cause excessive parked draw. Chevrolet’s battery-care guidance discusses terminal care and usage-related wear; Pico Technology’s parasitic-drain guide describes possible electrical causes.
Could the battery or driving pattern be the problem?
Yes. A battery can be worn out or left undercharged, and a charging-system problem can prevent it from being replenished. Short or infrequent trips may not give the battery enough time to recover the energy used to start the vehicle. A battery that has been deeply discharged may also be damaged. Do not replace parts based only on the fact that a jump-start worked: check battery condition and charging performance first.

AAA Mid States described a 3- to 5-year lifespan for car batteries driven under normal circumstances in its Fall 2023 guidance. Chevrolet likewise says vehicle batteries average 3–5 years, depending on driving habits and climate. Those are general ranges, not a replacement schedule for every car. AAA Mid States and Chevrolet both discuss short or infrequent driving and accessory use as conditions that can contribute to battery wear.

What should you check before a parasitic-draw test?
If the simple checks do not explain the drain, gather the history and verify the battery and charging system before looking for a vehicle-side current leak. A 2021 NHTSA-hosted technical bulletin recommends asking about the circumstances and driving pattern, and checking vehicle-side draw if no root cause is identified.

- When does the battery go flat, and how long was the vehicle parked?
- What happened just before parking—was a door or trunk left open, an accessory used, or a repair completed?
- Has the vehicle needed a jump-start, and how often and how far is it normally driven?
- Has any accessory, stereo, alarm, dash camera, or other electrical equipment recently been installed?
- Has the battery been tested, and does the charging system replenish it correctly?
A battery and charging-system check can separate a weak or undercharged battery from a vehicle-side drain. NHTSA-hosted bulletin 07-178-21, dated November 15, 2021, advises looking for a vehicle-side condition when no obvious root cause—such as a lamp left on—is found.
Why must the car be allowed to go to sleep?
Modern vehicles may keep modules and networks active after shutdown. Opening a door, using a scan tool, or leaving a proximity key near the car can wake systems and change the reading. A test taken too soon can mistake normal shutdown activity for a fault.

There is no universal wait time. Pico Technology describes shutdown periods ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours across vehicle systems, depending on the manufacturer. In its particular GM diagnostic setup, GM TechLink specifies waiting approximately 10 minutes before its measurement check. Neither timing should be applied to every vehicle; use the exact model’s service information.

How is excessive parked current diagnosed?
The procedure is vehicle-specific. In a professional diagnosis, the technician first establishes that the battery is charged and tests it, then lets the vehicle shut down as directed by the manufacturer. If current remains above that vehicle’s permitted level, the technician identifies the circuit and tests its components rather than guessing at a replacement part.
Current limits are not universal
Published figures illustrate why the vehicle’s specification matters. GM TechLink’s December 2020 article gives GM-procedure-specific guidance to look for stable current below 20 mA after approximately 10 minutes, and to proceed with its fuse voltage-drop investigation at 40 mA or higher. Snap-on presents below 50 mA as a general guide while emphasizing that the vehicle specification governs. Pico Technology says its typical current after sleep is less than 150 mA, while noting acceptable draw depends on manufacturer and application. These figures use different contexts and are not interchangeable pass/fail limits for your car.

Finding the circuit
Once an excessive draw is confirmed, the next step is to narrow it to a circuit and test what is on that circuit. GM TechLink describes measuring voltage drop across fuses and using wiring diagrams to identify the affected circuit for the GM procedure it covers. A fuse result is a clue, not a diagnosis by itself: wiring diagrams and component checks are needed to determine whether a switch, relay, module, accessory, or wiring fault is responsible.
Can you test the drain yourself?
A low-current DC clamp meter can be used in some diagnostic workflows, but owning one does not make the test universal or risk-free. GM TechLink specifies a 50 A inductive clamp capable of reading down to 1 mA for its described procedure; Pico also discusses low-current clamp measurement. The required tool, connection point, sleep procedure, and interpretation depend on the vehicle’s service information.
Do not improvise a battery-cable disconnect or meter-in-series procedure from generic advice for a modern vehicle. The wrong setup, or waking modules during the test, can produce misleading readings or create problems. Use a qualified automotive electrical technician if you lack the model-specific procedure or suitable equipment, the drain is intermittent, or diagnosis would require disconnecting battery cables or modules.
