For most first-time buyers, the Hero Splendor Plus XTEC is the better choice. It costs substantially less, has the stronger claimed fuel-economy advantage, is lighter and is designed around inexpensive urban commuting. Choose the Keeway SR125 only if you specifically want a 125cc retro-street motorcycle, five-speed gearing, a larger fuel tank and more performance, and you are comfortable paying more to buy and run it.
The comparison changes slightly if the Hero available in your city is the newer XTEC 2.0 rather than the earlier XTEC. Equipment, mileage claims and launch pricing differ by generation, so confirm the exact variant on the quotation before paying a booking amount.

Quick verdict: which one should a beginner buy?
The Splendor Plus XTEC is the rational default for a first motorcycle. Its lower ex-showroom price, high claimed mileage, low mass and widespread commuter-bike format reduce the financial and learning burden. It is especially well suited to a rider whose routine is home-to-work travel, errands and congested city streets.
The SR125 is the deliberate enthusiast choice. Its 125cc engine, five-speed gearbox, larger tank and disc-brake hardware give it more substance on open roads and a more distinctive retro-street character. Those advantages matter when the buyer values engine reserve and styling more than the lowest possible ownership cost.

Neither motorcycle can be declared universally easier for a short rider from seat-height figures alone. Their listed seat heights are close, and balance at walking speed, reach to the controls and confidence during a U-turn are more important than a specification-sheet difference of a few millimetres.
Price and the real first-bike budget

These are ex-showroom references, not on-road prices. Registration, road tax, insurance, handling charges, accessories, financing interest and any city-specific fee can materially change the amount on your final invoice. Ask both dealers for an itemised on-road quotation in the same city and on the same day.
How the price gap affects a beginner
A larger down payment on the SR125 can reduce the loan amount, but it also ties up more cash that could otherwise cover riding gear, a first service, insurance renewal or an emergency repair. If you finance the purchase, compare the total repayment and processing charges rather than only the monthly instalment. A low instalment created by a longer tenure can cost more overall.

The exact mileage advantage depends on which XTEC generation you are buying, but the direction is clear: the Splendor is intended to use less fuel than the SR125. To estimate your own monthly cost, divide your monthly kilometres by the claimed mileage and multiply by your local petrol price. At 1,000 km, the 70-km-per-litre comparison figure represents about 14.3 litres, while the 50-km-per-litre SR125 figure represents 20 litres. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a test result.
Stop-and-go traffic, frequent cold starts, a heavy passenger, under-inflated tyres and aggressive acceleration can reduce either bike’s economy. Keep a simple fuel log for the first three fills: record litres added and the trip-meter distance, then calculate kilometres divided by litres. This gives a more useful household budget than a brochure number.

The SR125 has a 27.8cc displacement advantage and one additional gear. That does not turn it into a highway tourer, but it gives the rider more flexibility when joining faster traffic, carrying a passenger or climbing a grade. The fifth ratio can also let the engine run more calmly at a steady speed.

It is easier to keep within its useful performance envelope in traffic, and the lower listed mass can make pushing, parking and recovering from a slow-speed wobble less intimidating. On an exposed highway or with two people aboard, expect to plan overtakes more carefully than on the Keeway.

Do not compare the Keeway’s 9.7 HP directly with the comparison’s 9.83 PS as though they were the same unit. PS and horsepower figures use different measurement conventions. Use the displacement, gearing and a supervised test ride to judge the practical difference.

The SR125’s nominal seat is 5 mm lower than the XTEC 2.0’s, but the difference is too small to decide a purchase without sitting on both. Seat width, suspension sag, riding boots and where the tank meets your thighs affect reach. A rider who cannot place both feet flat can still manage a motorcycle, but should be able to put one foot down securely and support the machine without stretching.
What to check during a test ride
- With the engine off, lift each motorcycle from its side stand and walk it backward. Note how much effort the extra mass requires.
- Start, select first gear and ride at walking pace in an empty area. Practise a full-lock turn in both directions.
- Stop using only the rear brake, then combine front and rear braking progressively. The controls should feel predictable, not abrupt.
- Ride over a speed hump and a rough patch at low speed. Check whether your feet stay planted and whether the suspension rebounds comfortably.
- Repeat the route with a passenger only if local rules and the dealer allow it. Observe clutch take-up, acceleration and stopping distance with the added load.
- After the ride, check whether your wrists, knees or lower back feel strained. Discomfort after ten minutes usually becomes fatigue during daily use.
Brakes, tyres and practical hardware
Keeway publishes a 300 mm front disc, a 210 mm rear disc and combined braking. Those are substantial hardware specifications for a 125cc motorcycle and can provide strong, controlled deceleration when the rider uses both brakes correctly. A disc size alone does not establish stopping distance; tyre condition, pad compound, suspension setup, road surface and rider technique still matter.

Hero publishes integrated braking, adjustable suspension and tubeless tyres for Splendor variants. Tubeless tyres reduce the chance of an immediate deflation after a small puncture and are easier to repair without removing the tube, although a severe rim or sidewall impact still requires proper repair or replacement. Confirm which braking and suspension equipment is fitted to the exact XTEC version on the invoice.

Practise emergency braking in a safe, open location. Keep the motorcycle upright, look ahead, squeeze the front brake progressively and add rear brake without locking either wheel. A beginner should spend money on a certified helmet, gloves, covered footwear and abrasion-resistant clothing before cosmetic accessories.

Hero’s May 30, 2024 XTEC 2.0 launch release documents a substantially specified commuter package: LED lighting, a digital speedometer with Eco-indicator, real-time mileage indicator (RTMI), Bluetooth call and SMS alerts, hazard lights, a USB charger, side-stand cut-off, bank-angle sensor and tubeless tyres. The same release states a five-year or 70,000-km warranty.
Those features are useful if you commute after dark, need occasional phone charging or want an instrument that encourages economical riding. They do not eliminate the need to stop safely before handling a phone, and Bluetooth alerts should be configured before riding rather than while moving.
Do not assume every motorcycle advertised simply as “XTEC” has the XTEC 2.0 equipment or its 73-km-per-litre claim. Ask the dealer to identify the generation on the booking form, show the feature list in the owner’s documentation and confirm the warranty terms for your market.

Reliability, servicing and ownership risk
A first-time buyer should judge service support locally, not by reputation alone. Visit the nearest authorised workshop for each brand and ask about appointment lead time, routine-service intervals, consumable availability and the expected price of a standard service. Parts that are inexpensive on paper are of little help if your city has to wait for them.
The Splendor platform is built around high-volume commuter use, which generally makes finding routine consumables and technicians easier. That is a practical advantage, but it is not a promise that every dealer will provide identical service quality. The SR125 may suit you perfectly if a responsive Keeway workshop is nearby; distance to the workshop and parts-delivery process are more important than online anecdotes.
Read the warranty exclusions before relying on the headline duration. Ask whether scheduled services must be completed within a time or kilometre tolerance, how accessory wiring affects coverage, and which parts are treated as wear items. Keep invoices and service records from the first day.

Choose the Splendor Plus XTEC when:
- Your priority is the lowest purchase price and fuel bill.
- Most trips are in crowded urban traffic and under moderate speeds.
- You want a lighter motorcycle that is easy to push, park and learn on.
- You value a broad commuter-service ecosystem and predictable routine ownership.
- You can confirm that the local dealer has the exact XTEC or XTEC 2.0 generation you want.
Choose the Keeway SR125 when:
- You specifically want retro-street styling and a more substantial 125cc feel.
- You regularly ride on faster roads, carry a passenger or climb hilly routes.
- A five-speed gearbox, larger tank and published disc-brake hardware justify the extra expenditure to you.
- You have a convenient, trustworthy Keeway workshop and have checked parts availability.
- You accept lower claimed mileage and potentially higher fuel and consumable costs.
Consider XTEC 2.0 if technology is your priority
If the newer version is stocked in your city, its RTMI, Bluetooth alerts, USB charging, hazard lights and LED lighting make it the more feature-rich commuter. Compare its on-road price with the standard XTEC rather than assuming the launch price still applies.
Common first-bike mistakes to avoid
- Comparing ex-showroom prices with on-road quotes: request both quotations with identical insurance coverage and registration assumptions.
- Mixing variants: label every mileage and feature claim as original XTEC or XTEC 2.0.
- Choosing from seat height alone: perform the low-speed balance and full-lock-turn checks.
- Ignoring the workshop: inspect service access, parts lead times and warranty procedures before booking.
- Budgeting only the EMI: include fuel, insurance renewal, protective gear, servicing, tyres and parking.
- Expecting brochure mileage in every ride: track your own fuel use over several fills.
- Skipping training: complete a recognised basic-riding course or practise braking and cornering in a controlled area before entering heavy traffic.
Bottom-line decision
Buy the Hero Splendor Plus XTEC for an affordable, economical and forgiving first motorcycle. Select the Keeway SR125 when its 125cc performance, five-speed character, larger tank and retro design are important enough to justify the higher acquisition and running-cost exposure. Confirm city-specific pricing, the exact XTEC generation, warranty conditions and workshop support on a written quotation before making the final choice.
